    Best youtube review so far of the civic hatch. Appreciate the honest take on it, including the turbo lag and rev hang which no other reviewer has mentioned except very briefly. It felt like watching a real person and car enthusiast drive the car instead of a journalist. Thanks for not making it cheesy and avoiding tired taglines or any stupid attempt at being witty or funny.

      Paco LeRoi thanks! truth is, that's just exactly what I am, a real consumer and an enthusiast. I'm glad you liked the video, I'll try to post one weekly to mark the progress of this car, and my other 3.

    Thanks for the honest review and driving footage. Spirited driving of the 6spd seems to be missing from every other review, but not yours. I'm also glad you pointed out the rev-hang, I learned it first from your video. You ultimately helped me with my decision to order my new '17 Sport Hatch 6MT in Aegean Blue, thanks!

      Thanks for the kind words, I really try my best to be as honest as possible (some people don't like it when I'm honest and the car I'm driving isn't very good). So happy you're getting a hatch, blue is a really nice color for it.

    Man, I watch this video almost daily. Waiting for mine to come in. Exact same specs, color combo as yours. Dude at the dealer said that by years end there will only be like 9 white sport manuals in America.

      Oh wow, that's really cool to know! We're one of 9 so far, that's more exclusive than most lambos and ferraris! You're going to love this car.

    I have heard three excuses for rev hang from automotive designers. 1. is that it helps to rev match for inexperienced drivers to save on clutch wear and components. Also prevents jerking. 2. is that it prevents flooding and unburnt fuel from entering the emissions system. Wouldn’t the computer controlled injection control that? But 3 was interesting. When a low priced vehicle is just as fun to drive as a high end sports car then those cars won’t sell nearly as often. If they don’t sell the race model then they don’t make them and without a flagship model it devalues the lower models. Interesting.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That third one is very interesting. I'm almost certain most of it is emissions related

    Good review. Answered many of the questions/concerns I had about this car. Not too much of a fan with the honey comb design though. In this regard, the golf gti is a little more appealing. I am however looking for a car that is going to be reliable, so it looks like I may end up getting the Civic Sport or maybe the Type R if I can get a good price on the latter.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can swing it, the type R is going to be an awesome car. I just don't really need the power, as I have two other performance cars.

    Good review. Your video is prompting me to get the Sport model although I have been thinking of waiting for the Type R. After watching your video, I am thinking about the problems I might have with the Type R in terms of paying a premium for the vehicle and the likely speeding tickets I will incur up here in Canada.

    Hatchbacks becoming more and more popular in Canada, also I'm seeing a lot of Ford Transit vans aswell in Ontario lol..
    Ford Transits have been in U.K since forever yet they are just starting to arrive in Canada now haha, Canada is seriously 10 years or more behind like lets say Britain..
    Just now hatchbacks are becoming more and more popular and more efficient in Canada but this has been standard in the U.K for quite some time.
    I think this exact car is actually built in U.K aswell so I heard

      Hey bud, yea I'm glad the hatchback is coming back in style, it's the best car body style due to the usefulness. These are built in the UK, it's the first "British" car I own haha

    engine? 2.0L?
    Great review...one thing tho...i don't think you realize how limited your interaction is with the car by not having the screen display in front of you...this RPM looks good but in there you should be able to send and receive text messages, facebook notifications, on tap navigation and a multitude of functions from android auto and apple car play are on there...you can just use this space for A LOT more than just show RPM and speed and this is what the other models with a screen offer...no offense tho very nice car i love honda i have a 2020 Sport coupe 6 speed manual in black myself.

    what is your opinion on the honda,fit? I have a 2015 and really it's a great car but I don't know much about cars. I really want to get the sport touring manual. but having paid 3 years of my fit already I'm wondering if it's worth it. what do you think?
    thanks again for the video and review very helpful.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fit is very good in terms of storage space and capacity, it's also good on gas. The only thing I don't like too much is the lack of performance compared to the turbo Civic. If I were you, I would just keep the Fit for now, keep it for another couple of years, save up some money then trade it up for something really nice, maybe a Type R?

    How do you find a manual?
    The Honda website isn't helpful, and as far as I can see, you have to search thru each franchise inventory one-by-one to see what they have available. There is no way to view a "national" inventory.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The easiest way to find the manuals is to go through edmunds and Autotrader, and do a nationwide search. I had to fly from NY to North Carolina to get my manual.

  • @jddelrosario
    @jddelrosario 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you experiencing problem with your smart entry? Like when you are away for a long period of time, you can't unlock it with just by hand. But if you lock it and open it right away, it unlocks. Also, when you start the car and you go out to open the hatch, it wont open.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey bud, I've read about Civic owners having this problem, I think some keyless entry systems have bugs that need to be worked out. On my car, since I don't have that system, I don't have that problem. I have the "old fashioned" remote unlock plus key (standard on the LX and Sport).

    • @jddelrosario
      @jddelrosario 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FlyinGato I see. This is why i prefer keys over push start/smart entry or whatever. Less problem. And it kinda sucks I cant open the hatch while the engine is running. I had to turn it off to open it. I dont get that idea

    Big mistake I chose the CVT and now I'm having issues with it at 1245 miles of course I'm going to the dealer to get it fix but being this vehicle the second new Honda I believe this is the last one, no more Honda for me. I'm back to Nissan.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sucks! I was definitely skeptical of the CVT, and always have been, no matter from what manufacturer. Manuals have been around for a very long time, the quirks and issues have all been worked out.

    nice ride man!i have to wait to see this car in my country for another 4 months..so can you tell me something about the engine?because it is the first time for honda to put turbo.do you afraid of that?

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Panos, Honda's had turbo motors for a very long time, Since the Honda City (1981). They've since had many, and most recently, the Euro type R and the US RDX had turbo engines. I think they have done very well with this engine, I have no doubts.

    • @panospanagakis1479
      @panospanagakis1479 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank u man for the response because i am about to buy this car and i want to be sure about my choise even it is possible. The honda cars that you have in your country are from the factory from england or another?do you know anything about that?

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, regarding the Civic lineup, we get our sedans and coupes from Canada, but the Hatchbacks are all built in Swindon, England. My car feels very well built, panel gaps are great, everything feels well made, as a Honda should feel. The main issue people are having on these are regarding the more upscale entertainment system (mainly, the touchscreen). It's another reason I like my Sport trim, it only has the non-touchscreen radio.

    • @panospanagakis1479
      @panospanagakis1479 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well i think in every country honda has their standar but these for me are meaningless because fthere are other things more important like engine etc. in my opinion of course.you are helping me a lot and i thank u but if you want i have another i think 2 questions(my thirsty for honda(japan)).what can you tell me about mpg in city(lt here in my country)?i suppose mine roads here in athens are a lot different than yours but i want to hear and from you your opinion about that.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to think the engine is also the most important thing as well, another reason I bought the Civic. As far as MPG has been, I do a lot of mixed driving, so a lot of around town (city) driving and a little bit of highway driving, and I've been getting around 35 MPG overall, and I expect it to improve a bit more after the engine fully breaks in.

  • @fernandoamador7008
    @fernandoamador7008 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    FG, I have a question for you, I just noticed my civic (just like yours) has this sputtering of the engine when I turn it off. Sometimes the sputtering causes the car to jerk because I let go of the clutch too soon due to the engine not shutting down right away. Let me know if you have noticed this too or it might just be me, thanks.

    • @FlyinGato

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to agree, but due to pedestrian safety regulations and other government mandated stuff, they had to add a lot of bulk to the car, and in order to break it up a bit, the fake grills help. The Type R uses them for brake vents, perhaps the aftermarket can make these fake vent grills work.

    • @FlyinGato

      throttle lag, as in when you tip into the pedal, is great! the problem is now rev hang.

    • @lewdards1127
      @lewdards1127 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah you see i have an 07 toyota yaris, electronic throttle body like all modern cars, and it lags like hell. like im talking a second of lag between stabbing the gas and actually getting a response. it makes the car really uncomfortable to drive because getting a smooth shift when the engine is doing its own thing is damn near impossible..
      the rev hang on the yaris is really really bad too, because it happens only sometimes and it makes shifting jerky as hell.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea I get it, the 2005 TSX my fiance had (I made a review of it) had a similar issue, but the worst experience I've had so far was in an X1 I drove (also reviewed on my channel) and my friend's honda Fit. It's like, when you hit the gas pedal, it has to think about what it wants to do when it grows up before it realizes IT HAS ONE JOB TO DO! The Civic hatch Sport doesn't have the problem, thank goodness!

    Hi, there.. Since the very first time the civic coupe was shown as a prototype for the new 10 gen civic, that i am in love... Here in my country, it started to be sold since 2017, and this year, i finally got to buy one hatchback 1.5 sport... i am in love, could drive it hours and hours, it's something unexplainable... but, maybe unfortunatly, i have one question, that i would like you to answer me if you can... In the US, or north-america, do you have to do the oil change at 5.500 miles?? is it normal for you guys? My civic started to ask to go to the dealers service for oil change.. i am a bit surprised.. Can you tell me anything about this?

    In my opinion, I love the rev hang, I think it sounds amazing when you hit 6k, and Instead of shifting, just let off the gas and it rev hangs for 5 or so seconds, and turbo lag isn't good for performance, but the thrill of getting a sudden rush at a certain rpm is what gives you a smile when you drive :)

      Honda has become a money pit. Veloster N seems the way to go since it's track ready stock. No tuning required, no modding, no rev hang, no turbo lag, no torque steer. The fact that you have to tune the Honda Civic just for it to work properly goes to show just how bad the automaker has become. Only the Type R gets it right, but then again $38k is ridiculous for a Civic that doesn't even have an active exhaust. So folks end up paying even more money to mod the exhaust on top of the $38k they've already spent. Like I said, money pit. Lol

In Europe we also get 1.6 diesel turbo and 1.0 petrol 3 cyl - which is pretty crappy, underpowered, and have had problems. The 1.5 is meant to be the best of the bunch for all round performance, economy, handling etc. (Unless you go Type-R of course)

    Rev hang in my 2014 Accord Sport 2.4 6MT.
    The rev hang isn't for EPA, you physically have to inject fuel to do that. The rev hang is there to keep flywheel momentum going as the flywheels are quite light.
    You'll see why it's there when you turn the A/C on and it drops much faster.
    I've tested this on my Accord about 500 times. It's one of my biggest issues. I can't ever get used to it. Sometimes it'll hang for what seems like weeks, others much more reasonable. I'm used to rev matching every shift to prevent from using the clutch.
    You'll see what I mean the more you use the car. I've tested it so much I've physically watched the revs go UP even though my foot has been off the gas for a while. It's not just because the foot is in it. I can make exaggerated movements to people to demonstrate it. But it's not EVERY single time, just most times. You'll see what I mean.
    I am also looking at this exact vehicle as well. I find that my Accord Sport gets me 32.5 MPG average, mostly highway, but I hammer on it quite a bit. The performance of this Civic is similar to the Accord sport, so I'm not sure if this lateral movement would be useful to me.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, this rev hang issues is one of the things I dislike about this civic, but at least there is hope with a future tune. I looked at manual accords as well, but I really think the hatchback offers good utility, so I went with the hatch instead.

    • @Christdeliverme
      @Christdeliverme 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly the Manual 2.4 Sport Accord is probably the better choice in most cases.
      BUT... The hatchback is a tiny bit more fuel efficient 8%, but that's running 87 octane, you lose the cost going to 93. There is no real tunability with the 2.4 You can get a cast bellmouth with no cat for like 8WHP. You won't even feel that.
      With the Civic hatch, there is a a bit more versatility which is important to me.
      And more importantly, tuning.
      I wish I knew what kind of connecting rods Honda put in this motor, or what kind of direct injection fuel capacity it's got. I'm guessing those will be changed in the Si or the R.
      You can tune that rev hang out thank GOD! It's obnoxious.
      I'd HIGHLY suggest though that you run a high end catch can as soon as possible. Please take it from me having owned many direct injection and DI turbo cars in the past.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    OMG so many comments here. Lol it took me forever to go through, and forgot is I commented on this video or not, wanted to check if I did, and what I wrote if that was the case. I couldn't find one, so, here it is, July 14, 2018...
    I still love this car. The Sport Touring Hatchback has all the bells and whistles, but costs several thousands more. The Sport Hatchback has it's unique charm, with a more serious performance driving vibe, especially fir thise that want the manual and are not in Canada to get the Sport Touring Hatchback with the speed.
    Grammar NinjaCat (Gato) must comment about a remark at the beginning of this video. It's an Intercooler, not a intercooler. Lol Aside from that, great video, as always.
    Maybe I should have been an automotive journalist, I can write a lot, but have not driven many different cars, and have certain preferences and biases, even though I like all kinds of cars and vehicles.
    Other than my past personal favorite cars I owned, my 2984 Buick Grand National, 2000 Chevy Impala LS and 2006 Chevy Impala SS. My 2011 Chevy Cruze RS awaits funds to restore, it be transformed into a stealth, high performance monster, or sold, or whatever.
    That Hyundai Elantra Sport caught my interest with all the performance, features and options on the fully loaded version. In blue, of course, I wanted that car, even if it was a Hyundai, after watching all the videos. Until I saw the Honda Sport Hatchback. Game changer.
    All the colors are nice, with the silver bring the least, bring so plain. I wanted the Sonic Grey Pearl for it's no nonsense stealth performance factor... Until I saw the Aegean Blue Metallic in person, and on certain videos. It looks like a pearl paint finish. I love the styling, even thise honeycomb panels so many detests. I haven't seen any efforts fir the aftermarket to make creative spins on replacements. Maybe with James Bond type options. Lol
    There's just one thing I notice that makes it quirky that I don't think the Si has. The odd way the pointed outer corners of the taillights just out when viewed from an angle from the front, like even with the front of the car, with a range of a foot or two away from the headlights, etc. But it's minor.
    So many people complsin about the lack of this and that, but they don't get it. You can get an EX with more options for about the same price, but not all the sport performance features, appearance add ons, and niceties like the leather steering wheel, paddle shifters for the CVT, exhaust, wheels, suspension, etc.
    It would be nice to have the turn signsl lights on the outside mirrors, LED headlights, nicer interior door panels and other treatments, and the rear seat center armrest, and map pockets behind the front seats, preferably both sides, like my three most recent cars/Chevy's. My Buick GN didn't have it, but it had beautiful custom seats only that year model had.
    The Sport Touring Hatchback outside mirrors, and rear seat with the center armrest could be retrofittedfrom upper level trims. I also am undecided about the headlights. I like the Projector look, even though I heard the LED ones casts a cool light footprint. But I believe you could get aftermarket bulbs to make it brighter, and whiter. I would consider that with bulbs that are about equal brightness to the OEM LEDs, without bring illegal, it excessively bright and blinding
    So much other things you can customize and upgrade, little by little, but looks are subjective, and all the complainers just don't get the fact that the Sport Hatchback was specifically equipt as is like ok'd school.petfirmsnce cars of ok'd to have all the sport looks and performance, and be affordable. Like the Si, most who get these cars don't care about the Honda Sense, or similar options equiptment. The Subaru Integra Sport Sedan and Hatchback is the same way. But you can get all this safety features and other options, but you don't have to, and can save money, if you want more back to basics performance and functionality.
    I know exactly what I would want, snd would add, but can do it in increments as budget allows. Whether it be looks, functionality, confirt, safety, performance, etc. I would decide that step by step.
    As a start, it's great out of the box, per se. Fast enough fir me, though I wish I could get the LSD and engine upgrades, and maybe stereo from the Si. But they have suspension upgrades, and Borla and other aftermarket exhaust systems. Other than the other available aftermarket pieces I would want, legal smoke tint windows, weather mats, and customized pieces, and the Red JDM Honda badges for front, rear and steering wheel, I think I would be happy with the engine peformsnce in stock form, since I would get the CVT and not have the Rev hang problem that I believe Hondata can fix. It still could be a consideration, but the power would be sufficient. The only other main thing I would consider other than suspension, stereo, exhaust would be upgraded brakes. Honda now offers the HFP package on the Civic Sport Hatchback and Si, but I only like the HFP emblems, and brakes from the package, that may be available separately. I don't like the options roof spoiler, which is also available without the HFP package, and the 19" wheels. The tires would also be an additional charge
    I love the factiryb28" wheels, and the optional wheels are another nice option, but so expensive. The HFP on the Si would be anotger thing, since it does not have that spoiler, and also has some performance tweaks I can't remember. I think it had to do with suspension and throttle response.
    So, close to the $25K range, at the mist, close to $30K with all the options and aftermarket add ons, the base CVT Civic Sport Hatchback would be fine for me.

      I drive manual in LA. It's really hard to learn manual without proper training. I got a few lessons first before started practicing on my own. I can personal say learning from videos would be a terrible idea vs having someone there with you telling you what to do, when to do it, and whatever questions you might have answered there.

      chocoboblue99 i actually learned how to drive a stick based off a TH-cam video. i learned on a 2015 Civic Si coupe. i am fairly good and I drove it around a parking lot but havent driven on a road yet. i really love stickshift and I am contemplating buying one very soon. just driving on the road concerns me especially with people who stop abruptly on the road. can you provide any tips?

      People stopping abruptly on the road shouldn't be too much of a concern to you because you're driving stick. People with auto can follow way closer and tailgate, but you shouldn't. If you driving stick, you should keep a even greater gap between you and the car ahead of you. A wider gap, also means you have more time to change gears. (downshift, upshift, whatever)
      Also, if you do have to stop abruptly, keep in mind that you have MORE braking force with the clutch engage than disengage. This is because the engine is also helping your car slow down with the brakes. So, when you see you have to BRAKE HARD, you just hit the brakes hard, then just before the car stalls out that's when you slam in the clutch too.
      I don't know why movies always show people slamming both clutch and brake pedals together when they have to brake hard. Looks cool on film, but that's where a video would be telling everyone the wrong advise.
