This film was made 22 years before I was born and I still loved every second of it. Comedy can be timeless, and these movies truly are. I only wish there were more films made in this series. I never would have known about them if it weren't for that one scene in Austin Powers where he made the comment about In Like Flint. Up to that point in my life, I didn't even know those three words were a movie. I just thought it was some junk people said. What a discovery! I was probably 30 before I discovered these films so that means it was on this earth 52 years before I found it. That's crazy to think about.

Much of the success of these classy comedy-action films can be attributed to two talented and assured performers. Cobb is a perpetually irritated everyman who can barely stand to ask Flint for help even when the planet is threatened with destruction. He wins our sympathy. Being around someone who is superior to you in every way you can imagine, and probably in many you cannot, is bound to get under your skin a little, however heroic the fellow might be.
But Flint, who ought to be insufferable, is not, thanks to the deft matter-of-factness with which the old hand Coburn handles the ridiculous character. His superhuman superiority is polite and off-handed. Derek Flint is the very model of Aristotle’s Magnanimous Man, really too advanced a being to even take notice of the seething envy of others.

@@YamsPhysicalCatalogueOfMedia True. Bruce said that he wished McQueen was more like Coburn, with some interest in the philosophy, and that he wished Coburn was more like McQueen, in the fighting department -- see Peter Berton interview.
Also, I think OMF was released in -65 and Coburn met Lee around 1968. So if true, then Bruce did borrow Coburn's screen style and 'made it his own.' Mr. Spock of Star Trek also seems to borrow a lot from Flint (when did ST come out?). Spock even uses the Vulcan nerve pinch which Flint uses in In Like Flint.
Matt Polly's new (well last year) bio on BL is good; he interviewed more than a hundred people for it. There's a photo 1967 with Bruce sitting next to one of the Amazon girls of In Like Flint; she's in costume, and Lee is in his Kato uniform. ILF was filming at a soundstage near the Green Hornet. The actress also says they had an affair.
McQueen and Coburn were pall bearers at Lee's funeral. In an interview Coburn says, "I miss him every day."
