This is an old video so it's unlikely that I'll get a response but I have to say that this tank has really inspired me to create an aquascape very similar. In the coming weeks I plan on setting up my first shrimp tank (still deciding on size but it'll likely be about 20 litres due to space restrictions). I currently have a Betta in a planted tank but I'm not too happy with the scape since it is my first, though it is perfectly fine for the Betta and he seems to like it. I'm going to spend a lot more time planning this aquascape since I can't set up the tank for a few weeks due to getting a new boiler installed and the placement of the tank would clash with the process of the installation. Thanks for the great aquascape video!
I’m glad to hear that it has inspired you! Always a welcomed comment. I’m still active so I still see all my comments regardless of date of video 😋 ..sounds good! Taking your time to prepare is always a good idea. Go as big as you can with the tank, the bigger the better, and easier it will be to maintain stable water parameters etc. Let me know how it goes 😁
Kierans Fish I might be able to stretch to a 30 litre tank as the tank will be the same as width as my shelf but then again I have to take into consideration my budget. It's not the size of the tank that gets me it's the substrate as upgrading form a 20 to a 30 is relatively inexpensive and maybe costs an extra 10-20 quid depending on the tank manufacturers. I have some money from my 18th birthday left so I may as well put it towards something good rather than wasting it. By the way I love those long plants at the back, might have to get some of those or at least consider them when planning the scape.
I didn't even recognized the thermometer until i read this comment, because it's just so normal to be in there... 🤷🏻♀️ Your AQs design is the eyecatcher, not that small little thingy in the front.
Thank you both! :) I see what you mean about that, but I love filling it with plants lol. Plus the Cabomba at the back looks really nice, I think they shrimp like it too.
Awesome! Do you think betta and corys will be ok with this sand? (Dennerlr nano shrimp black) I want dennerle black quartz but as i cant find it wonder if this works with them too :) have a nice day
Poke Munitty no because I only had about 5 shrimp and a huge amount of plants. I monitored the water and if there was ever a tiny bit of ammonia I would of done a water change.
Poke Munitty my tips: get a heater that is at least 50W. Don't go for those tiny heaters. Get a cheap LED light off Amazon/eBay. They're cheap but they grow plants extremely well. The sponge filters that use an airline are loud lol, get a submersible filter where the motor is in the water.

Thanks so much :) ..glad to hear you're starting a shrimp tank, shrimp are great once they're established. The substrate I used was just simple, fine black substrate from Dennerle: www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/gravel/221-dennerle-shrimp-gravel-sulawesi-black-2-kg-4001615059137.html Thanks for your comment.
Hi Kieran, those plants look really good, did you get them from ProShrimp too? One other thing regarding your water supply, here in Kent it's medium hard,is yours more or less the same?
@@KieransFish Very impressed with the quality of the plants, I've got a Juwel Rio 125 at the moment, good tank but I fancy a nano just for plants and a few Endlers or shrimps so I'm studying your setup for ideas and tips etc so thanks for the good videos, appreciated.
Do your rocks not need removing for cleaning? The large pebbles and rocks in my tank need cleaning every 3-4 weeks as they get covered with algae/slimy black stuff. It's been this way for a year now. Anyone have any clue why?
Kierans Fish so you never need to remove your rocks for cleaning and the algae eaters are enough? I'm setting up a new, bigger tank now I have more experience but want to make sure whatever i put in there (and spend ages positioning/planting up) isn't going to have to be disrupted every month.
Zoe Northeast algae isn't really a bad thing it can just become unsightly. The otos clean it to a certain extent but some of my rocks do have algae and I may sometimes remove them and rub off the algae with a towel. But algae can give a natural look.
Kieran ru on fb. I really need some help with setting up a tank like this I gave it a go today. let's just say the water went black. the wood floated. and I couldn't get the plants to stay down. I'd really love it if you could help me with this project
MsTrix23 hello, sorry mate I don't have Facebook but you could email me or reply on here if you wish. Sorry that you're having trouble with your tank. I'm guessing the water went black because you didn't rinse the gravel first? The wood floated because it needs to soak in a bucket of water for a long time like a week before you place it in. This makes it sink and removes the brown tannings that will stain your water. You could also sit a rock or two on the wood so it sinks. I feel your pain with the plants too, they can be a pain. Iv found that sand or very fine gravel works best with planting plants. Any more questions just ask! Hope this helps mate.
You could get away with changing water once a month for example, if you had a big tank and very few fish. It all depends on how much nitrates are in the water. But no, you cannot have a setup that requires 0 water changes.
Awesome! I would like to create something like this and getting started in this Hobby! Do you have any tips or where I can find information to begin? Thanks!
Hey! yeah sure, I'm a member on this forum: www.tropicalfishforums.co.uk/ they have lots of beginner articles, and they will also respond to any questions you have, even more so if you're a beginner. Hope this helps :)
That's substrate looks like Eco complete. I'm serious as to why you washed it with, what I assume is, chlorinated tap water? Wouldn't that then kill all the beneficial bacteria that substrate has?
Sorry but is a 150 W heater not too big for a 30 litre cube? If you have this on stock ok but if you buy all things new its better to buy a smaller heater. Normally you use a 150 W heater for more than 100 litre and not for such small tanks.
@@KieransFish Sorry for my misunderstanding! I saw that you use a BOB sponge filter in the video and in the description was an Aquael Pat Mini. Hi Kieran, what's your honest opinion on these tanks, I'm considering getting one just for a few guppy's and shrimps.
Wouldn’t get it for guppies, not long enough, I wouldn’t put fish in anything less than 60cm long (2 foot). Shrimp are fine though
