Thank you so much for uploading this video, I was about to email you about how to install passengers in these amazing 21" cars! Your videos have always been terrific! Lionel should be PAYING YOU!!
Thanks for an informative video Eric. I have added figures to many of my K-Line extruded aluminum passenger cars and I completely agree with your comments on them. They are very labor intensive to disassemble and reassemble. I have used the painted figures from China and really like them. I also have done some detail painting during the process which adds some contrast to the populated interiors. Granted this takes extra time but with the LED lighting the newer cars have it really shows off everything nicely. I have used that jeweler's pickup tool to set the screw back into its place for re-threading. That accelerator stuff is a "must have". Thanks again!
Thank you for this and all of your videos, you shine a positive light on the hobby. I watched it a couple of times before I added the passengers to my UP passenger cars.
There are some simple alternatives for more detail. Especially for commuter trains, you could paint figures in business suits -- tiny newspapers could be simulated with printer paper. Repainting could add people in uniform. Hospital car figures could be simulated by figures painted in uniform, white, or coloured duty scrubs. The new ranges of 1:48 military miniature kits could be scrounged for accessories, including: ● briefcases, shoulder-bags, backpacks. & luggage; ● maps, papers, newspapers, books, radios, etc. ● dishes, mugs, cups, teapots, etc. ● pets -- dogs, cats, or birds -- or personal service dogs; ● uniformed military passenger figures (duh). Just a few accessories, especially on window-side tables. would add colour and individuality as the cars glide by.
In my 20's I used to paint and sell D&D figures. And once you learn the techniques, it takes about 15 minutes to get a decently detailed figure, maybe a half an hour for extremely detailed figures. One thing is to do them in sets, not one at a time, as some will use a common color (flesh being one). As for buying paints and brushes, those can be used for other things, like interior details in buildings and other items. So if you want customized looking figures and more variety in the cheap ones. painting is the way to go. You can use modeling putty to ado things like give someone a belly, or change that one girl you showed to wearing a long skirt. Plus, once you learn the techniques, it's actually fun. If a person has the patience to scratchbuild or modify kits, you have the patience to paint figures.
I know ths was from over a year ago but i love watching these, myself i can imagine details like upholstery colors, table cloths, even dish wares on the tables, or even food at this scale. And i even thought of using microscope slide glass for the windows to see in better.
An alternative to gluing is to use a dab of clear silicone. It takes a little longer to cure than CA but it fills inconsistencies-- like gap-filling CA -- and it accommodates a lifetime of bangs and vibrations from train usage.
what amazed me instantly was the space under the table on these models. nothing I own has space for legs. for me this project would be full of amputations. i have a question though: is that big circuit board on in the diner just for lights? does this model have other functions?
Great video Eric! Man, you aren't kidding about what a pain it is gluing figures into an extruded aluminum passenger car! Especially an observation car. I made a partial video of my adventure, maybe I'll share it someday.
Don't get superglue accelerator on the paint. It may remove it as I found out. The K-line alluminum cars which may be the same as Lionel are terrible to get apart. I gave up. They came with figures and some came loose. I used a mix of the Chinese and Lionel figures. Good video Eric.
What type of accellerant are you usuing? My wife and I used to buy spraky accellerant from Gale force 9 but they have stopped making it and switched to a brush on kind. I'd like to buy spray on kind again but I can't find any locally.
All of the companies that make a line of CA adhesives also make an accellerant -- check hobby shops for a spray version. While you're at it you could also pick up some debonder for those little, um, accidents. ;-)
So pleased to see you putting passengers in trains. Far too many outfits have loads of empty trains with no train crews either. What is the point of populating your "Realistic", layout but having completely empty GHOST TRAINS running around? I only moan because i was a train driver for many years. The only 'EXTRA' detail would be to have flip over platforms with waiting passengers on, then train comes in, ( obscuring view, flip passengers, for empty platform ) train leaves and passengers gone!! Only joshing, great vid as ever. It all depends on your dedication to detail/realism.
How do you take apart an MTH passenger car (set #33-6237)? I want to add passengers to my Pennsy passenger cars, but I can't figure out how to get it open. I looked for a video in your selection on this, but I can't find one. Help me Obi-Wan Eric, you are my only hope.
Eric you are funny. I enjoyed your presentation. I can put these same kind of figures in my Christmas village. In the automobiles etc... Thanks for some great ideas. See Linsterville. I have trains in the video. But not the feature. Thanks for sharing. You area a master.
The light colour naturally brightens up the interior -- an old trick. And it's easy enough to replay the interior insert once you've taken the car apart.
This hobby is really expensive. I mean just $40 to $50 being a deal for passengers, that is a lot. Eric must have spent a lot of his savings on this wonderful layout.
Couldn't disagree more but I don't use thumbs down. This a perfect example of how you can budget your time with little projects. An afternoon in front of a video with snacks and a beverage, painting and modifying figures for mounting in a passenger car is idyllic. Thirty bucks for 36 people and an afternoon of entertainment doesn't seem excessive at all. Cut the cost and extend the fun by painting undecorated figures.
Are all aluminum passenger cars cinema aoart the same or do the passenger cars come apart different mkt I know mtbwi. Williams up passenger car do come apart different
Dang, you should add a "graphic warning" at the beginning of your video. I had no idea I was gonna be witnessing such barbaric brutality. Removing of limbs and cutting a woman in half. Oh the humanity. LOL Very educational, thanks.
There are two companies on ebay that do very good detailing of toddlers and grade schoolers. You may be able to use 'some' HO figures as an alternative...
@@Ericstrains hello dear, HE QUALITY OF ART painted figures is out of the time, smell chip china production , now thhe level of paintin is big higher, like a real, sorry again
Joseph Red most of my videos are meant to educate, and when it comes to teaching I believe it's better to over-explain than to under-explain. The goal is to answer questions before they have to be asked.
Joseph Red I personally enjoy his longer videos, because he takes the time to explain things well and in the end everyone understands better what's going on

Hahaha I did too

What a great way to add passengers to the coaches for the train

Gavin Simmons That's the stationsounds diner. It has sound effects in it. Eric has a separate video on the sounds.
I like it when you say "cut off the legs" because it is hysterical.
25:17 You can’t tell which passengers have their legs and which don’t. All you see is happy passengers.
Passengers: *INTERNAL SCREAMING*
Until its time to get off the train...😂
Great video, Eric! Really enjoyed this one!

Great tutorial Eric. The cars look really good with figures inside. Will there be a video on adding figures to a European passenger car, late on?
Excellent video Eric!! Very informative and helpful.. Too funny with the extra "body parts"!! Lol!! Thanks loads!!
Great video always like see tips on how to work on Lionel stuff, can't wait to see your review on the 2-8-0
Enjoyed the video thank you for the information and the perfect people figures for the passenger csr

Hendo56 You remove two screws on each end, near the trucks, then the roof will come off and you can add passengers.
EUREKA! That's it! didn't see them at first because they were in recessed holes. Thanks!
Hendo56 You're welcome.
I really enjoyed the video it was very informative thanks for uploading from Staffordshire England.

Looks great, indeed. Lovely work!
Ever use the body parts for a Halloween themed layout? I really like your videos. I wish I would’ve came across them earlier. Very educational.
Hey you uploaded this on my birthday. Thanks.
Happy B-day!!
AWESOME tutorial Eric! Thanks bud!
super easy Eric, you made that look easy and I am sure it was, thanks for doing this video
What people should I use for my layout, it's based after the magical land that is under my tree, and it takes place in all of the times
Very informative. Thanks for uploading.
Eric what if you have layout like yours to were it's a modern and its old fashion and you want the 1950s and 2016 would you have to divide the table?
Looks good don’t care for the yellow interior. The train comp should have made it gray
The light colour naturally brightens up the interior -- an old trick. And it's easy enough to replay the interior insert once you've taken the car apart.
Thanks for the video

I have a question, is HobbyTown USA a good hobby shop for Lionel trains?
18:15-MY LEGS!!!!
Is the process the same for the heavy-weight passenger cars too?
Awesome Eric!
You should paint the interior
Are all aluminum passenger cars cinema aoart the same or do the passenger cars come apart different mkt I know mtbwi. Williams up passenger car do come apart different
This terrifies me to no end and I don't know why.
Imagine the horror of the hospital car mid-surgery. ;-)
What scale figures did you buy ? 1/43, 1/48, or 1/50 ?
Waow this was really good video for have pepole in cars. :)
nice videos, as always!!!!!
Eric get the trains safe!!!!!!
What about older cars like in 1987?
these information are useful even though I don't have a o scale, i do have n scale and this information is useful
and i enjoyed the video
Can I run a MTH train on Lionel tracks?
yes
Dang, you should add a "graphic warning" at the beginning of your video. I had no idea I was gonna be witnessing such barbaric brutality. Removing of limbs and cutting a woman in half. Oh the humanity. LOL
Very educational, thanks.
can a Lionel Loco run like on bachmann or hornby track
Epiks Gaming not sure i think the locos use the 3 rail for power so don't think so, butt I don't use lionel bachman for me
I know what you mean about buying painted figures vs non painted
fun video Eric. Funny, much of what you said if taken out of context makes you sound like a real masochists.
hi Eric great tutorial one problem you repeat yourself to much but i understand why you do thank you.
It's a way of making a point. Also, you can emphasize a point that way. ;-)
Ok
Do they have children figures? Some families at the tables would look nice.
Lowell Dever yes they do, I just didn't have one for this video

Clever!
Eric, At 22:11 I hope there is a rest room in that hallway. That girl looks like she really has to pee.
Hot glue is easy to use if you want to change up your people and less damaging. You can remove the people easier if you use a hot glue gun. Ijs
Ah, you don't paint the interiors.
Paint it whatever you want. This video was about installing passengers.
