@Bassplayingboy They started using the graphite rods in 1995. Due to the neck being extra rigid, the dead spot you usually find around the G string, by the 6th or 7th frets (where the concave is at its deepest) is almost eliminated. The graphite helps the notes project more in an area that is usually a "tone sink" on most wood necks. I own four American Standard Jazz Basses with these necks, and LOVE THESE BASSES!!!
this was almost like an Factory run special and there were only a small of them made. these were done last year and they were snatched up in a heartbeat
I think fender prefers to stay away from the neck binding because it must be broken or re-bound in the event of a re-fret. I agree with you though, binding does look cool on other j basses like the geddy signature.
@mumumumusikman2 i supose it does yes, but i think the whole style with the metal bridge and pickup covers dates back to the 50's or so when they played differently.
I love the look of jazz basses, especially with the bridge cover. however I'm not fond of the matching headstocks. the bridge pickup through the big muff is killer.
I have a question about the "Big Muff"...will it work okay with a solid state bass amp or does the amp need to be a Tube amp? Thanks...btw the bass is great!
Nice review. Im lovin that color. I think it would look cooler if it was all white! Anyways, i have a question. Which bass do u like better, the EBMM classic 4 or the 50th anniversary jazz bass?
@alexlvhw Also, the pickup covers shield the bass amazingly well from interference. On my P-bass, with both covers on, I can sit within in a foot or two of my computer set up-- which consists of my laptop, monitor, xbox, two power strips, and a bunch of other crap-- and I hear only a slight hum, where as with my uncovered Jazz bass, the hum is louder than my playing when that close to that many electronics.
two major legendary rock bass players of the mid 60's & 70's Noel Redding (RIP) of The Jimi Hendrix Experience & Mel Schacher of Grand Funk Railroad also played the Fender Jazz Bass!!!
@alexlvhw pick up covers are mainly for show and not so much a change in sound, it can add a bit of a twang and it limits where you can play on the strings which is what will change the sound
Great video! Have you ever considered reviewing the Japanese made fender aerodyne jazz bass or any other Japanese fender products for comparison with their American counterparts?
@Ramones1234100-I thought that too. I wonder if this guy just plays the same thing on every demo? Plus, don't the drum tracks sound too loud? The bass barely comes throught.
I wonder if the hum is only there when one pick-up is fully turned down. Like on strats, where there is no hum in in-between settings. Does is become more apparent when you dial down one pick-up or is it still there with both fully on. My apologies for the clumsy phrasing.
@ThatBassProductions Except for the fact that, on the Jazz, unlike the Precision, the bridge cover takes away a lot of room for playing near the bridge, so it's kinda limiting.
@KeTeVemCovers Don't assume that just because one bass made in Asia broke down, that all of them do. There are some nicely made quality basses coming from Asia. A great example is the Sadowsky Metro line. Those things are pretty awesome. Anyways Gotoh, Hipshot and Schaller sell some tuning machines. Try searching there.
Is there any exact replacement if a bass tuning machine broke (it looks like tuning machine on fender bass)? 3rd problem in a week on an 1 year old crapy Apollo bass thats made in Taiwan. I REALY NEED HELP!!! Thank god I have 2 basses and thats another reason that I would recommend buying quality stuff that isn't made in Asia
no jazz bass has more options but i think p basses have more of a lower register for funks and stuff like that i personally would get the jazz bass because of its versitality but the p bass is also really good depends on what you play like funk would go for j bass but for more bassy tunes i would use the p bass
Thx very much for the wonderful and very helpful description and demonstration of the fender anniversary jb. this week have so get a 50th Anniversary jb and am very enthusiastic about sound, playability. This bass I like almost better than my custom shop classic jb ;-) Now there are no more excuses for me... if something on my bass playing is not in order, it is not the fault of the instruments and amplifiers ... does that mean for me to practice, practice and more practice ;-)))
Has all of Fender Bass inovations since the begining. Updated tuners, block inlay's, graphite reinforced neck, 70's bridge spacing, high density bridge, string thru body, nitro laquer paint job, pick up covers. All it needs is neck binding and a better strap. But I agree Fender did a great job on this one. It's like a big lipstick. Make the girls jump up and down.
The Jazz bass is awesome for slap stuff. The bass player in my band Goliad uses one and slaps the hell out of the bass all the time. Jazz basses rule, man.
@CrimsonCru @thechuckwillkill They really go from 300-1000 depending on the model really. If you want even better quality id recommend getting a japanese one if possible. I have a Geddy Lee sig not just because i am a huuge rush fan but because its the easiest way to get a nice japanese model. Its the only japanese model that you can buy here unless its used. Its definitely inbetween mexican and american models. Some people even like the japanese models better, including myself.
Anyone else noticed this thing sounds SOO much better when you use more bridge pickup then neck? XD And does this guy only know 3 riffs lol? Brilliant bass.
It's hard to compare basses with this guy, he just makes everything sound good!
Ed Friedland is the only one who's able to make a good music gear demonstration.
Thank you Ed!

Sounds as beautiful as it looks. Really want one of these now!
this was almost like an Factory run special and there were only a small of them made. these were done last year and they were snatched up in a heartbeat
THIS..........is the most beautiful bass I've ever seen.
It also looks like it has 70's style pickup positioning
I think fender prefers to stay away from the neck binding because it must be broken or re-bound in the event of a re-fret. I agree with you though, binding does look cool on other j basses like the geddy signature.
Great work, and as usual, this guy actually does a real REVIEW unlike some other people around these parts. Love this guy
@mumumumusikman2

Always enjoy Eds playing and reviews
@mumumumusikman2
its a pickup cover,
adds style, and somthing to rest your palm on
@asianibanez those are cover plates for the pickups they dont really have a purpose i took them off on my bass
I have a question about the "Big Muff"...will it work okay with a solid state bass amp or does the amp need to be a Tube amp? Thanks...btw the bass is great!
nice marcus miller tone going on there with the slapping part.
Nice review. Im lovin that color. I think it would look cooler if it was all white! Anyways, i have a question. Which bass do u like better, the EBMM classic 4 or the 50th anniversary jazz bass?
i have a jazz bass.it is a 5 string deluxe active in 3 colour sunburst.it is an awesome bass.
3:23 - That tone!
@PSIboy66 lol not for a while bud...he's had his own signature jazz bass for a while now
When did Fender start using graphite posi flex rods in the necks? How much does this help with dead/thin spots?
@ThatBassProductions Yeah I noticed that as well although it sounds different at about 3:25 or so .
@alexlvhw

what is the exact spacing between both pick ups and between the bridge pick up and bridge????

@PSIboy66 Used both. Geddy Lee has a signature Jazz Bass
@PSIboy66 he used to now he has a signature Fender, but he probably still plays his Ricky some times
@Ramones1234100-I thought that too. I wonder if this guy just plays the same thing on every demo? Plus, don't the drum tracks sound too loud? The bass barely comes throught.

Funny, I've got the exact same Big Muff, only I play an Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV VS. I'm saving up for a good Fender though.
i just love the road worn jazz bass in the background
Your deeper Mids, especially on the low E, sound so bassy-punchy, more like Humbuckers. Are u using a preamp? Or how can that be explained?
@RewindMJ not even the MusicMan Stingray and Big Al? Now theres some unique sound there.
Can I use your song you played at 2:13? Using it for a animation :D

@Ningirsutyr because Steve harris uses the precision bass not the jazz bass
The first bass I ever played. I was about 5...yeah I couldnt play it very well but still, fell in love ;)
no

I think they posted this vid already??
If both pickups are on they become like a humbucker and there's no hum, right?
i could never manage a sound while slapping with a yamaha, now im thinkin of gettin on a fender jazz...how much do they cost? 1500-2000$???
So is this still available anywhere? :(
anyone know where you can get just a bridgeplate?
I have this bass, I have Fender Flatwounds on it , good old school tone.....but man does that finish scratch ,dent and ding easy.
Hey, this is my bass guitar instructor; on my beginning bass DVD.
what drum is that in the background?
hey ed, what kind of pick do you use?
What series is this? Standard, American or Highway One
The Jazz bass is awesome for slap stuff. The bass player in my band Goliad uses one and slaps the hell out of the bass all the time. Jazz basses rule, man.
way cool what year is that bass?cool
Is he in sales?
@jayjohnson83190 It's the same bass, it just had the pickup covers on when it was in the box.
What you recommend for me??? jazz bass or precision bass???
doesn't Geddy Lee use a Rickenbacker bass?
that's a cool jazz bass guitar, I wish I had that
@Ningirsutyr Thats propably because Harris doesnt use Jazz basses
Can you give me a tab for the first bass line? :)
How much does this bass cost? I feel like saving up for this aha!
OH MY GOD, i found it below my Christmas tree!!!

Julien Grandseigne
well then... congratulations man :D
your grooves are so tasty and melodic..... great phrasing and touch of course
what's the price for this model?
A good friend of mine bought one of these basses - they are real nice.
I wish Fender would make their basses with matching headstocks again :/
Could you send me the groove you are playing, please?
Whats your amp setup?
@faisalfarissi. as a Fender guy I kinda have to agree. I wish they made all their basses with a badass.
I can see the excitement in his face.
@andyg3 it also helps resonate or somthin
What Song he played?
I find it funny that there was a head and shoulders ad at the start of the vid ;)
What is that box?
I have number 224, Im interesting in finding out how mich is worth. Please can you tell me your opinión. My bass is a 5 string and is the Gold edition
@arran8910 - Actually, no - I only know ONE riff, just ask anyone!
eny body know the name of the songs he plays?
Looks and sounds like this could be the best-playing bass Fender ever built ? :)
But for the rest of us, upgrading a Squier does quite well too!!
Hello Ed, yeah not bad for an old broad, I got one at Gearhounds in September 2012.
i remember seeing this in my local music store and remembered this video when i saw it :D
Nikolai from the strokes almost always uses a jazz bass
Perfect Bass
does enybody know what the grooves are called he plays
try to figure it out by yourself. You can see his fingers moving and you can heard it well.
Intro song reminded me (immediately) of Mercy, mercy, mercy.
@818KLOWNER around 2499-2899 $ i think. i only know that its 86000 THB

Is this a long scale bass guitar?
How many frets?
What's the weight?

Do I have to sell my car ?
What value pots come on this guy?
First bass I ever played at 5 years old. Only bass I will ever play

Anyone else noticed this thing sounds SOO much better when you use more bridge pickup then neck? XD And does this guy only know 3 riffs lol? Brilliant bass.
