  • This M5 was delivered 27th of April in 1943, build by International Harvester Company Chicago, Illinois USA. The M5/M5A1 was created out of a need to produce more (M3) halftracks. The engineers of IHC did an extensive study also based on large scale manufacturing equipment and made many changes to the design. These vehicles became the M5 and M5A1 halftracks. However the essential features remained the same it differed in many respects from the M3 like Homogenous and thicker armor (bendable) / banjo model axles / strengthed chassis and hull and the Suburb International Harvester Red diamond overhead valves engine. This made it without doubt the best halftrack vehicle and technical superior to the White, Autocar and the Diamond T halftracks.
Complete restoration took more than 2500 hours where every part was taken apart and restored. In 2009 we completed the Halftrack to participate on D-day and went to various events until in 2014 we decided to finish all last details for 70 years remembrance of Operation Market Garden.

How did IH strengthen the chassis on their halftracks as opposed to the White, Autocar and Diamond T?

    Excellent restoration....
They were a bit inferior to the German 251 series which had better armor plate and tracks. The M3/M5 series had better driving capabilities and vehicle egress as they were essentially like a truck to drive whereas the German halftracks had oddly positioned steering wheels and no side doors.

This U.S Halftracks where used over and over in war movies. They used them as German halftracks in Battle of the Bulge,T.V show Combat.
