You may not know before 13th century Thailand (Siam) was Khmer.Thai was born from Chinese immigrants migrated from south china, Yunan when Mongolia was defeated Chinese. The Chinese started to migrate to south which is now Thailand. Khmer King Jayawaraman Vii created a refugee camp named it Sokhatey- It meant freedom and since Chinese can't pronounce Khmer clearly. Later the camp became Sokuthai. So Khmer and Thai, Lao have the same cultures. There was a Khmer king who was governor In Changmai
