Most of the forward lean of the houses was by design, to make hoisting the goods up to the warehouse floors for the houses easier, that is where the hooks were orginally for, now they are used for moving furniture. Amsterdam was a planned city from the moment it stopped being a village. The plots were narrow to give the most traders canal access, so people had to build upward to have lots of space, they used huge windows not just because they could afford them unlike most of Europe, but also to save weight on the soggy soil. The "Golden Bend" is the exception made later on for the very rich and where the wide 20 million houses are. The city planners also had the foresight to mandate open space and the other end of the plot, so there were gardens and trees and some of those gardens of the Golden Bend are like mini Versailles. This was towards the end of the Golden Age, which the more precise historians consider to be from the 1570's to 1672, by Dutch defenition the golde age is a 100-yearish period, but it really took off after the invention of the wood saw mill in 1592, allowing the Dutch to build ships 30 times faster and together with modern central banking outcompete everybody in trade and end up with more merchant ships than the rest of Europe combined.
Good explanation. The canals in the city center now have a Unesco protected status. How different was this in the 50's till early 80's. Restoring canal houses was sometimes classed as "not economically viable" so they were torn down and replaced by modern buildings. That is why you can sometimes spot an eyesore between beautiful homes.
Just found you Max! Loving your vlogs! You're very interesting and you speak well, clear and chilling. The houses, crikey, it would be hard to choose 1! Looking forward to many more of your future vlogs. Thanks again!
