As always, a great video. This one brings back fond memories. In the 1950's we would camp on the beach in North Carolina near Moorehead City .We camped in a bread truck my Dad converted into a Motorhome, great times ! The only fishing rods we had were light fresh water trout rods with mismatched spinning reels. I learned the basics of fishing at that time and as an active 72 year old in Colorado am so very thankfull for those great times in the surf. We caught mostly grunts {?}, and an occasional ( highly prized) Pompano. Love your channel, your family and your testimony.
What a great video Beach Bum That's my kind of fishing I love using light tackle a day on the beach like that's enough to keep you smiling for the next 3 days
Did this back in Sept when on vacation. Had my med 7'11" Crappie rod, used cut Shrimp and got ate up by the Pinfish and baby Jacks. My 11yr old son and I had so much fun, catching more than we could count.
Haha that was awesome! I did the same with in an Ugly Stick Dock Runner rod that I use for catching bait fish! It was fun and scary at the same time. Ive had close calls getting spooled! 😅
That was pretty cool! And very encouraging, sometimes when I get out on the beach with my smaller inshore rods I feel like I have too small of tackle and you prove that it's just a bigger challenge! Thanks Matt.
Great video as always! I'm happy to see that you had success with a "freshwater" setup. Being new to the coastal area (Savannah), I don't have a lot of saltwater tackle yet (though my wife thinks I do! LOL!), and it's encouraging to see that I can use some of my freshwater gear and not feel like I have to spend a small fortune. It was also informative watching you fight fish that were testing the limits of your rod/reel. Thanks!
Awesome video! Always nice when you can go out and not only catch quality fish but a new personal best to boot !!! Hopefully after I recover from this surgery I gotta have next week me and my autistic son Johnny plan to get out and go fishing here in NW Louisiana.
Great video on fishing challenges back a few years ago I caught a 44 Inch 44 pound salmon on a bass reel 16 pound ultrathin Berkeley with a little black fly that was crazy it took us down river a half a mile before I got it in the boat but ocean fishing still my favorite
This is great! I'm planning a trip for May and will be flying so I had planned on just picking up a Penn combo that I will leave there when I fly home. Nice to know I have a chance of being successful with a smaller combo!
Matt, a 4 or 5 foot rod like that I would call a "Brookie" rod. But, several years ago I bought several "Crappie" rods at Gander Mountain. Three of them were 8 footers and one was a 10 footer. The 8 footers I use for stream trout, coho jacks, lake whitefish, walleye and smallies and the 10 footer I use for adult salmon and steelhead. It appears that "crappie"rods have enough backbone to handle larger fish. Good video.
A "carolina" rig is a rig with soft plastic... a fish finder rig the same set up with live bait... Just letting you know Mr. Bummy stick... I own 2.... Thanks for your years of contribution transforming from a insurance salesman... Yes I've been for years! Awesome family work as well!!
On a light rig like that, bubble and grub, bubble and fly, carolina riged grubs, flies, or ice spikes, small swimbaits, the smallest rattle traps or rattlin raps, and small minnow plugs, and 1/8 kastmasters are all great producers - and big fish WILL hit them if they are around. Elephants eat peanuts sometimes.
Alright Matthew, I feel like you're messing with me. Ever since I commented that you should do a crappie video (several videos back), there have been Crappie mentions in every video, but no Crappie. Awesome video anyway. I love Whiting and you got into the monsters! Well done!
I've always tried to use the lightest tackle I could to make any fish sporting. We used to catch 10+ lb. steelhead trout in Michigan's trout streams with long super limber rods on 2lb leaders. I fish the surf in the Tampa area, I always bring a light setup for the whiting & pomps.
I use a7 ft light action rod with a1000 series reel, 10lb braid and 6lb flouro leader. I fish this in SW Fla and will catch all types of fish. Small to medium snook are a ball. I have noticed I catch bigger whiting this way vs larger tackle, even the steelhead setup.
Nice video and nice fish. Here's what I do so I always have a measuring device with me. Spread your fingers as wide as you can and measure from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky. Note that measurement. Use that measurement to measure your fish. If it comes too close to the "size limit", I err on the side of caution.
That was great. A lot of folks see massive 12ft poles, heavy line and big reel at the beach and think you have to have massive gear to surf fish. Not true... unless you fish rough surf like me (east coast), 2-5 ft waves usually, and have to launch 4oz + sputnik sinkers to get the bait to stick. The bait and fish themselves are smallish, but long casts with heavy sinkers require 9ft + heavy rods, 30lb minimum braid, 40 lb. mono leader for the shock, and a reel with a large capacity spool. Wish I had whiting right next to the beaches I fish, what a blast.
FYI...my favorite light surf rod is an 11' Lews crappie jigging rod that I cut down to 10' and glued on a new tip top. I've caught pomps, whiting, everything else, and even landed a 37" red two years ago. It will handle 2 oz weights with soft, lob casts. Only costs about half to a third of what a name rod costs, BTW.
It sounds exciting. I love challenges….. only thing is my 1000 spinning reels have, 2#, 4#, 6#, & 8# test. I will use them when I visit in 16 days, and there’s a possibility that next year I’ll be coming back and not leaving. I had always planned upcoming back to Florida when I went to visit my mother for a couple years in Arizona in 1987.
Look like a ton of fun. I don’t live near the ocean so almost all my fishing is freshwater. Could you use crappie or small bass jigs to catch fish in the surf? Just curious
I so need to get my butt back down there. It's been since at least 2009 that last time I wet a line off the beach at NAS Pensacola. Something has always came up over all those years whenever I have tried to make plans to go back to my favorite part of the country (between Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, all the way over to Destin) It is time I make some unbreakable plans to get back down there as soon as possible. Cheers!
Monster Whiting! What a day for you! Them big Whiting does fight really hard, I once hooked a fifteen that at first I thought had to be a small shark! The really strange thing, was this was on a nightcrawler!
Caught my first Pomp on my freshwater spinning rig...Glad I didn't get intimidated thinking I had to go all in on 10ft rods and gear...Walked into Half Hitch Tackle in Navarre and said "Here's what I have to work with"...They hooked me up and now I'm hooked on Surf Fishing...
I can't believe you didn't keep any of those whiting. Fishing with light tack is a blast. I caught the Muskie in my profile picture with a Shakespeare light to medium action bass rod.
We use to fish for crappie in the spillways of North Mississippi back in the summer of the 1980's and would catch spoonbill catfish over 10 lbs. Did this using a Dwaiwa minispin with 4lb test line. You had to move where they moved to be able to land them.
7 or 8 foot ultralight with a 3000-4000 reel spooled with 8-10 pound crystal braid shorecasting in the salt with yozuri pin minnows and small swimbaits? Hillarious. 3 pound jacks fight like marlin on that setup. Once hooked a MONSTER ladyfish (they get BIG in hawaii. Like better than 10+ pounds) now i know why they call them "hawaiian tarpon" Took half an hour to land, almost spooled me twice... good times.
I've always enjoyed light tackle fishing. Personally, it's just not any fun for me to catch small fish like whiting on heavier tackle. I don't understand doing that at all. I also strongly believe lighter line and smaller terminal tackle makes your bait much more attractive. And if you hook a big red or whatever, so be it if you can't land him.
I caught my PB channel cat on a 4’ rod and 4lb mono. It was probably the single greatest fight I’ve had with a fish. Easiest way to catch bigger fish is just use lighter tackle.
I can’t cast most of my crappie gear is the only issue I have. I fish a lotta extendable poles for crappies is the only issue I have with bringing them to the beach lol.
You could use your body to measure things. Take a tape measure pinch it on your fingers put your arm out and measure to your shoulder. Then measure from the tip of your fingers to your elbow. I have 18 inches from the tip of my fingers to my elbow, which is a good measurement. You can extrapolate how long is where the tail comes on your arm.. if your tail reaches your elbow from the tips of your pinched gather middle finger and thumb, you know it’s 18 inches. Knowing the links of different parts of your body like your hand and elbow, you can measure things not perfectly but fairly well.
Hurts my feelings to see those big whiting swimming in water and not grease. Some of the very best eating fish you can catch in the ocean bar none IMO.
Great question! Steve’s response is correct, we did make videos together more in the past but it was basically 2 of the same thing. However, we have been discussing showing up in each other’s vids more but not making the same vid.

I fished north topsail yesterday and while ago puffers are thick
Howdy from Newport,NC
Your Dad was way ahead of his time with that conversion bread truck
What a great video Beach Bum That's my kind of fishing I love using light tackle a day on the beach like that's enough to keep you smiling for the next 3 days
This is when you are at your best with fantastic content. Just cruising the beach and finding a colony of stud fish
Did this back in Sept when on vacation. Had my med 7'11" Crappie rod, used cut Shrimp and got ate up by the Pinfish and baby Jacks. My 11yr old son and I had so much fun, catching more than we could count.

Excellent video, Matt! Thank you
Had a huge grin from beginning to end 😃
Great fish ! Great vid ! Great fun to watch !
Thanks for sharing the experience 🌊🎣
Congratulations your showing me all I need to do is go fishing Thank You !!! Going Thursday for sure
Fantastic catches!... Crappie rod now part of ocean gear!

Excellent video, Matt! Nice big whitings! Keep the Lines Tight!!
Looks like a blast! I love that reel
Now that’s an epic day of fishing. Great video plus awesome job landing big fish on a small rod.
Awesome video! Always nice when you can go out and not only catch quality fish but a new personal best to boot !!! Hopefully after I recover from this surgery I gotta have next week me and my autistic son Johnny plan to get out and go fishing here in NW Louisiana.
Weather is gonna b nice with this little cold snap!!! Can’t wait to see where u go fish!!

Glad to see you doing a fun video like this! Awesome!
This is great! I'm planning a trip for May and will be flying so I had planned on just picking up a Penn combo that I will leave there when I fly home. Nice to know I have a chance of being successful with a smaller combo!
Now that’s one of the best whiting videos- feels like the old days ! Save some for me 😊
I love ultralight tackle! Brim on fly rod is my favorite!
Looked like a lot of fun! I need to try this.
Great Video!! I like to mark my rods, that way I don't have to run and get a tape measure every time.

What a surf fishing set up, nice whiting
Really nice bunch of Whittington!
That was an awesome video.
Pomp on the cräp! That’s awesome my dude! 👊🏼
That is the most fun you can have catching quality fish on light tackle! You can feel every head shake on those light rods!!
Nice video! Enjoyed it Beach Bum! I like those type of videos

Damn that looked FUN!!!!!!!
You threw them back???!! OMG not me. LOL!!
I agree, why didn't he do catch and cook

This is the most jumbo Whitings I have ever seen in one fishing trip. Yay!
Whiting my favorite fish to eat . White meat all day. Awesome Catches. Be Safe Brother. Don't ever underestimate the Whiting.
Look like a ton of fun. I don’t live near the ocean so almost all my fishing is freshwater. Could you use crappie or small bass jigs to catch fish in the surf? Just curious

Olá amigo mas novo a chegar no belo trabalho 🎣👍
Congrats on the new PB
Makes me wonder if the lighter gear allowed you to feel those bites better? Loved the video. Gives me inspiration!
Congrats on the PB Matt but I was waiting for you to get smoked 😁
Caught my first Pomp on my freshwater spinning rig...Glad I didn't get intimidated thinking I had to go all in on 10ft rods and gear...Walked into Half Hitch Tackle in Navarre and said "Here's what I have to work with"...They hooked me up and now I'm hooked on Surf Fishing...
I can't believe you didn't keep any of those whiting. Fishing with light tack is a blast. I caught the Muskie in my profile picture with a Shakespeare light to medium action bass rod.
Those are huge what a day always wondered how a rod like that would hold up
Planning a trip to the gulf coast next week. Think I'll throw a couple bass rods in the car now.
I fish almost every thing with 6lb line. Caught 6lb bass 5lb brown trout. It just makes it more fun.
That was an awesome whiting day!
We use to fish for crappie in the spillways of North Mississippi back in the summer of the 1980's and would catch spoonbill catfish over 10 lbs. Did this using a Dwaiwa minispin with 4lb test line. You had to move where they moved to be able to land them.
That first whiting is large enough to be an entire meal for me. I can’t wait to get home.
You can catch anything on any pole and reel with the right bait and right time..
Do you think that by using thep model m😊 lite tackle allowed you to catch bigger fish
In the winter time here I catch two lb rainbow trout on 2 lbs test lineI do most of my fishing around Kansas city Missouri
I was throwing a Big Nic Spanish Candy with a crappie rod today haha didnt catch crap but there were birds diving on North Topsail Beach Nc
Like better than 10+ pounds) now i know why they call them "hawaiian tarpon"
Took half an hour to land, almost spooled me twice... good times.
What lb test line do you have on your crappie pole
Used to catch whiting around Saint Augustine on crappie rods
You’re catching the smartest because of the light tackle. The largest they stay away from. That would a study to try out
Are you peeling your shrimp or fishing shell on?
I've always enjoyed light tackle fishing. Personally, it's just not any fun for me to catch small fish like whiting on heavier tackle. I don't understand doing that at all. I also strongly believe lighter line and smaller terminal tackle makes your bait much more attractive. And if you hook a big red or whatever, so be it if you can't land him.
Afternoon or morning bite for this one?
I caught a 23 in whiting ,had to look twice for the dots!
I guess the big whiting may be closer in.
I caught my PB channel cat on a 4’ rod and 4lb mono. It was probably the single greatest fight I’ve had with a fish. Easiest way to catch bigger fish is just use lighter tackle.
Well? Was that Giant Whiting a PB? Are you fishing ala or Fla?
I can’t cast most of my crappie gear is the only issue I have. I fish a lotta extendable poles for crappies is the only issue I have with bringing them to the beach lol.
Something in the water!
i would test a surf setup vs the crappie setup at the same time to see if there is a difference
I need to bring my XL 7ft trout/panfish rod to the beach next time by the looks of it
Yeah
Caught a few 15 inchers yesterday
You’ll never see those when you wanna keep one
I catch lots of Pomps from the Naples peir on pink plastic crappie Jigs
It always happens, when you bring the smallest rod. You catch your biggest fish.
I wish that I had a picture of the Pomp that I caught on ultralight gear. That thing would have been huge on a Bummy Stick.
Maybe the light line is the key
If you don't have a measuring stick, measure it on your rod and know where the tail was and you have video to run it back and then measure your rod
Awesome! Get rid of the surf gear!
Haven't watched all of it yet. Hopefully you didnt have a Crappie day of fishing 😏🤣
WOW some of them might as well have been Redfish
What beach ?
dont you think it was the 6lb line you were using ,the reason why you were catching these giants ??
lighter smaller line might be making the difference
I’ve asked before but where is the H in a crappie?? If I’m not mistaken it’s not Chra!!! lol 😂!!!
You found the secret to big whiting...
You could use your body to measure things. Take a tape measure pinch it on your fingers put your arm out and measure to your shoulder. Then measure from the tip of your fingers to your elbow. I have 18 inches from the tip of my fingers to my elbow, which is a good measurement. Knowing the links of different parts of your body like your hand and elbow, you can measure things not perfectly but fairly well.
Okay, when was scanning headlines, what I read of your title was. Took Crap and beach... I'm sorry.
Hurts my feelings to see those big whiting swimming in water and not grease. Some of the very best eating fish you can catch in the ocean bar none IMO.
luck of the irish
Why didn't you keep them to cook for supper?
Shimano makes a better reel than any thing Diawa makes
How come you bearded Brad don't fish together any more...along with angler up with Brant since you 3 have opened up the store... interesting???
i prefer them to not all post the same video at the same time......
Great question! Steve’s response is correct, we did make videos together more in the past but it was basically 2 of the same thing. However, we have been discussing showing up in each other’s vids more but not making the same vid.
Sad all that and know way to measure if these are keepers when people out of state watch this to learn I'm 12.51 and lost interest in your video
