Mance Lipscomb’s grave

  • Mance Lipscomb was from Navasota, Texas. He was “discovered” at the ripe, young age of 65 & toured quite a bit after that. He called himself a “songster.” He borrowed from others & put his own country blues spin on it. I went to make a recording of his song “Ain’t It Hard,” which borrows lyrics from Blind Lemon Jefferson, but my phone overheated & I only got a few verses in.

    I was lucky enough to see Mance perform in a coffee shop on the Texas A&M campus back in 1972. I think the cover charge was $2.50 or less, I remember him pulling out his pocket knife as he was telling us stories and then on the next couple of songs used it as a slide. Little did I know that I was watching a true legend. It is a shame that more people dont talk about him.
