  • The 2019/20 Snowbird trip continues with a quick stop at Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon on the mouth of the mighty Columbia River.
    The campsites are well laid out, roomy and easy to navigate. Our off-season rate for a full hookup 50 amp site was $31 a night. The grounds are extremely well kept and situated in a beautiful coastal forest. Highlights of the park are miles and miles of biking and walking trails, lakes and ocean beaches, old fortifications, museum, and even an old shipwreck!
    We only had a day to tour around so I decided to visit a famous nearby landmark and viewpoint called the Astoria Column. Perched on a hill above the city it gives a tremendous 360 view of the surrounding landscape. Luckily it was a clear day.
    Also, I take a trip inside the large state park grounds and show you the ocean, beach and river views plus several of the old forts. The whole area is steeped in history going back to the days of the lEwis and Clark Expeditions, Civil War, and WW 1 and 2. Not to mention the extensive maritime history being situated on the mighty Columbia River

    We stayed at Fort Stevens a couple of years ago - our Lab liked swimming in Coffenbury Lake (she unfortunately died in May) and we liked the history & greenery. Our friend’s boat was built in Warrington, so we were trying to explore the area a bit. Yes - lots of history! What a view from the column & the art on it 😍

    Fort Stevens is one of our favorite Oregon coast campgrounds...When our kids were young it was a regular campground for us...and we just visited there a few months back..had 5 elk come right into our camp! Usually its the raccoons...lol...The actual Fort Stevens is a really cool place to hike to and see and explore...plus if they still do it the Civil War reenactment is fun too - was usually in the summer time....Beverly Beach just north of Newport was stomping grounds for us too! Great beach there!

    Lovely views of all the places you both have visited! It’s been a long while since I saw the Northern Coastal areas but I cannot live in the ocean. I don’t like the fog that hovers until early afternoons! I found it too depressing and moved to the Sacramento area where it is sunny most days! I did enjoy watching your video! Happy travels 👍

    We overnighted at Dismal Nitch a couple of months ago and slept in our minivan. Quite impressed with a random rest stop tucked there. I like funny named places like that. Going east one time we camped at Stinkwater Pass near Burns, Oregon. Super neat place with curious cows and bats at dusk. Even saw a wild horse dusting up on the short trek into the spot.

    Haha I had that same exact site a couple years ago! It's a great park and also a really good seafood place under the big bridge too! Also the only place a Japanese sub ever fired on North America I think at Fort Stevens during WWII. Just one shot if I remember correctly you probably just read all that.

    Great information! We spent June through September touring the PNW and Astoria was a favorite stop! Camped a few nights at Cape Disappointment campground. Next summer we will go thru Utah Idaho, Wyoming and Montana to Canada and travel west to BC and loved the information about the RV Parks that you mentioned in your last video. We will come back thru Washington and Oregon and really enjoyed seeing Fort Stevens as that is one of our destinations. Don't worry about taking your jacket off too soon, enjoy the cool as it was in the mid 90s today in Palm Desert and is about 10 degrees above normal in most of the surrounding environs for the next week or so!

    When we were at the column, the parking lot was full of tour buses, and there were hundreds of people, so we skipped climbing it, but if you are ever in Rome, you can see Trajan's column, the inspiration for the design. Safe travels!

    Great video Ray. We stayed in Fort Stevens on Memorial Day weekend and extended to ten days 2019. Love going there. The big bridge you came across from Washington to Oregon, I have pretty fond memories of. I first visited Astoria in 1964 with a bunch high school friends. The bridge didn't exist then. We took the Astoria-Megler ferry across from Astoria to Washington.

    Another excellent video, Ray. Did you mention that Anne can now have a camera in her hands?? Yeah!! Last few videos, she looked like she was missing an appendage, walking about without a camera in her hands. It would appear she is recovering and that is always a good thing. Happiness abounds. Blessings to you both.

    We were advised at the tourist centre that Astoria is the oldest city west of the Rockies. The houses and buildings must be renovated to period, so the old part of town is a trip back in history. Several movies, including Goonies have been filmed here. It is one of our favourite areas to visit. I hope Anne is feeling well.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They had lots of Goonies merchandise in the visitor center. I remember the movie from when I was young but didn't think it was such a big thing. Guess its a cult classic now. :)

    Great video of an area we like to visit. Was especially a fun place to ride all around on our electric bikes because there are so many bike trails. You got some great weather for this time of year. I think we were clamming up on the WA coast at this time. Was some of the best weather we have had for that. Hope you and Anne have a wonderful winter season. Sure do like watching your videos. If you would have travelled up the Columbia for a couple hours you could have visited us.

    @toddramsay977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In Astoria, it is privately owned so you have to admire from a little distance. If you are a fan you can see the house that was in the movie "The Goonies" it is a classic film from the '80s.

    Another beautiful area. The Astoria Tower was very cool. Looked like a nice climb 🧗‍♀️ Good thing that door wasn’t locked. Reminds me when I was around 10 -15 I guess ( 50 yrs ago) my aunt took me up the Washington Monument ( live in Va) and back then you could use the stairs. I cant believe that she went all the way up and back down that. They stopped that many yrs ago. Ok what were they doing on the beach with post hole diggers? Ha. Just wanted to say, saw someone said something like wish you would explain what’s going on in video. I was like what??? So just wanted you to know that you do the BEST on TH-cam on explaining what is going to be shown and mapping out where everything is. It is SO helpful with marking and knowing exactly what’s going on. You do such a great job. I wish others did such a great job. Sometimes I’m trying to figure out where the heck they are even talking about. Ha . Looking forward to the Snowbird trip and it’s ON. Yea.... Glad the new truck is doing so great.. Hope you have a wonderful safe trip and I’m so glad to be going with you all !!!!! 🎉👏👍

    What did Anne do with all the mushrooms? My grandma used to look for mushrooms behind my mom and dad's house, (where I grew up) up in the woods. She passed away several years ago, but she almost made it to 100!

    Quick question. Do use a ever use a tripod when videoing or mostly just handheld. However you do it you do a great job, especially on the zoom in and out. I know that can be a bit tricky.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes, but not too often as I find it time-consuming. I ended up getting a good camcorder with excellent zoom and image stabilization so I can just carry one thing around, rather than a camera, tripod, and different focal length lens. Lots of practice over the years has helped with the panning and zooming. :)

    Hi Ray. With the surging popularity of RV'ing, do you make reservations well in advanced for things like state parks and private CG's, or do you just wing it and hope a spot is available whenever you pull in?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When traveling we mostly wing it. But, if we want to visit a particularly popular/busy State or National park then I'll put in a reservation. Usually, its so we can stay in the same campsite for an extended time like a week or two and get to pick a little bit of what campsite I want rather than hoping for a good one.
