I’m not crying, you’re crying. Seriously way to go, Syd. Finishing that race was such a huge physical and mental accomplishment. Keep fighting. Very inspiring stuff!
“SMILE, FIGHT, DIG DEEP. Smile, because you made it; fight because you can; dig for those who can’t, and keep believing because whatever happens tomorrow… is just the beginning” -Syd. Thank you for those beautiful words, and for: sharing, smiling, fighting and digging deep.
Syd, having watched you go through this for the last year has been beyond inspiring, watching you cross the finish line brought tears to my eyes. Congrats on racing and finishing like the champion and inspiration that you are.
I was working with the timing company at the start line at Iceman. When I saw Syd's dad (Jim) at the start of one of the amateur waves, I admit I got a little excited thinking that I would see you and Macky racing also. It was fun seeing you guys toe the line. Thanks for coming up to MI for our little "party"! 😜🤣 Congratulations to you all on your finishes! And I hope you enjoyed our (N)Iceman Cometh. 😉
My first time racing Iceman was after breaking my back. I'd promised myself I'd do my first race that year and that was the only local(ish) one left by the time I recovered. I had two weeks to prepare after being off my bike for 3 months. My single goal was to finish. I was thrilled to cheer you on as you approached Icebreaker and I'm honored to be included in your wrap-up (25:39). :) Your recovery is quite inspiring and I look forward to seeing you progress!
Hi Sid you may not remember me I had a big crash a little before Mackay did, spinal cord injury...incomplete quadriplegic. I've been following your recovery as inspiration for my own, my local club has just announced that from next year they will have an adaptive class so in your honour I'm going to start racing again too. Thanks to both if you guys so much
You are amazing Syd. So many people only look at the time on race day, but never consider the 100 or 1000's of hours they spend or will spend just to get there. It all counts and thank you for sharing your journey to help others understand you are not just celebrating that day, but all the days that led up to that. A toast to your success and for continuing your journey. Thank you so much for sharing.
As a person who’s injury took them out of a sport they’ve loved their whole life, it’s a real tear jerker to see you be able to work your way back and finish.
Syd, you need to know that your story and struggle are inspirational. I’m 56, and just joined the gym. I know what you mean, about being out of shape! But hey, that’s ok. Don’t be too hard on yourself. We are not perfection; we are human…and that is our beauty. Someday, I promise you that you will look back on this time in your life, and say, “wow, if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here now”! “Thank you for letting that happen, so that I might be here, now”! I swear, that’s how it works! Universal sense of humor and glorious irony! You’ll never be alone, because I’ll be right there beside you, cheering you on, in my heart.
So incredible to see the whole family racing again!! Syd what a great race to start back with! I'm so excited that you raced, finished and now have that knowledge stored to motivate you through the winter/spring training schedules. The course looked beautiful and I'm so excited that you were able to race before the end of the year. Now you know what your body feels like from a mechanical standpoint, you know how to train AND you have a great training partner... so have great confidence in all of that. As for the rest of you, I truly love watch all of you racing, thanks so much for sharing!! Can't wait to see what your next video will be.
Thanks for sharing all this with us Syd. You certainly didn't 'owe' us anything but we've appreciated seeing your strength going through this God awful experience. Best of luck in the future.
Totally inspiring! I'm no racer and merely a fat old bike enthusiast. I had a big slam a couple of weeks back and have surgery scheduled on Friday to put my shoulder back together. Never had to go through anything like this before and at age 53 the road to recovery won't be easy. That said, the joy of bike is alive within me and I'm bound and determined to return better than ever next year! Keep on pushing Syd!
Been a long time fan and I have to say, you are truly inspiring. I got back into racing 3 years ago after a 11 year hiatus and alot of the motivation was you and Macky. Over that 11 years, I got very out of shape and gained over 120 lbs. With the XC Racing inspiration of this channel, coaching a NICA team, and family support, I’ve finished the season on the podium for the past three years, twice being regional Champ. Thank you for the motivation, perseverance, and fun you bring with your videos. They make a big difference to us on the other side of the screen! *PS, really enjoying our copy of Send It!
What a great job. It was a pleasure seeing those custom jerseys in the woods that day. Your dad blew past me mid-way through the race. Definitely not wave 48 material! Great work out there!
Congrats on getting back to racing guys! You both amaze and inspire me so much and have taught me almost everything I know! In fact, two weeks ago I raced at my first non-NICA race (The Austin rattler 20 miler) and with all your advice, training, and leaving everything out on the field, I got second place at my first race longer than 10 miles against people all more than twice my age! You guys both rock so much and thank you for helping so many people and reminding everyone to be more awesome!!!
This video got me. In 2018 I blew my ACL and both my meniscus'. Down for 8 months and 2 surgeries, atrophy settled in due to horrible PT procedures and ja...I couldn't even pedal with any real power for an additional 9 months. The part where you said " every rep, is a step closer " and looking at you completing the race...The sweat, tears and frustration it took to get there...I can relate to this after suffering through this injury for 3 years. Crossing the finish line at HellHole in Sept of 2021 in 2nd place, your story just gave me perspective! You are Tungsten!!! We've got this!
I was so happy you both made the trip. Bummed I missed you, but stoked to see you come up that last climb. We are hopeful you both come back next year and would love to put together a ride with you and our local youth riding organization!
Thank you for the inspiration Syd. I watched this one with my little Emma girl and she LOVED IT! I haven’t done a race since 2016 after getting crushed on a training ride by a truck. You’ve inspired me to sign up for an event next year and just try. Congrats! We all love you!
Way to go! I’m 4 years out from a broken hip. I’m nowhere near where I was and don’t expect I ever will be, but you’ve got me wanting to sign up for MonsterCross next year just to say I raced one last time. Congrats in your come back!
Way to go, Syd! Thank you for sharing your journey back from injury...I have shared this with my wife who had hip replacement in June and is waiting for a 2nd surgery to correct more issues. I know she will find this inspirational like I did!
This is awesome!!! Syd we are all so happy for you. It has to be hard being off the bike that long. Set your next goal and go get it. You can't hear it, but we were all yelling and ringing cow bells. Keep pushing...... you got this.
Syd, as you have been dealing with your challenges and are now back on the bike, I can totally commend you on how you handled your ordeal. I have gone through much the same experience, except mine is a vascular issue. My comeback event was the Mt Lemmon Gravel Grinder in Oracle, AZ. I feared everything about doing the event. I am no pro, however, cycling has been my life. I certainly could not have done any of it without the help and encouragement of my village. I consider you and Mackey part of my village, as when I was feeling less than inspired, I would watch one of your videos and immediately get on my bike. Watching you cross the finish line brought back the same feelings I had when I crossed the finish. Thank you for sharing your story.
I enjoy all your content but this one was extra good. I'm usually not much on "family" and "wholesome" stuff but this was both and it was awesome. Inspiring and entertaining and really funny! The race strategy checklist was hilarious. And Macky's perfectly place "eating wins races" merch made me want that shirt. And I'm just an old guy who rides for fun and loves your videos.
Well done on getting back to racing. This is your best video yet. Way to share your come back thoughts. So many of us have been there at our own level. Congratulations!
Holy crap. I don't know if I have the words, but I sure did cry a few tears. Absolutely phenomenal Syd! And I can't thank you enough for taking us on this journey with you. You are an inspiration!
This is so inspiring. It made me cry to see you cross the finish line. I used to ride and race on a road bike and started mountain biking about 3 years ago. I am 50 years old now and I don't know if I could do a mountain bike race now even if I am still in pretty good shape. But seeing you how you kept going no matter what...well...I might give it a try this year :D ;) RIDE ON!
First off, who the hell dislikes this video?!?! I was forced to quit rock climbing due to a major shoulder injury that resulted in surgery. This was 3 years ago and I’m just now getting back into it but I can tell that I won’t be able to climb like I once did. It sucks. It robs you of your identity. Crush it and keep being awesome 😁 PS. got a major laugh out of the penis pumpkin.
I think you would never know how big of a inspiration you are!! Because of you and Macky good things happen to me! So first of all I'm so proud of you and thank you!!
Congrats Syd! Iceman is a special race, and I'm ecstatic you two came to our little corner of the world to experience it. Sucks that you basically soloed the whole race :(
Hi from Dimitris from Greece.Congrats. for your race ,iam so huppy for you and i hope to continue doing the things that you love to do and nothing can stop you .Keep going girl .
I've just gotten into MTB, but I've been a climber for 30 years and I know how one seeming minor thing at the end of a long day can suddenly push everything you love to do out to some unknown point in the future... if you can try hard every day... if you can even come back. Way to go Syd. Sorry I wasn't following you back when this race happened. I would have loved to meet the both of you at the finish line. If you ever come back to race this again I'd love to meet you both. This year will make my 5th year of doing this race.
Great job! Michigan native and Iceman veteran here that has done Breck Epic and started following you after this years Breck. I have been there coming back from injury and it is a huge accomplishment. I love a comeback story and can so relate to those finish line tears. There are some verry fast ladies in that group and the start is full gas for sure. Congrats. 👍👍👍👍
7:02 I knew it!! Ha. I obviously always see that master link mounted to the bars on your bikes, can’t remember a video where you said what it was. Seth @Berm Peak just reviewed the Mule Mount and I thought “hold up is that what Syd and Macky have??” -confirmed!

It's dust in my eyes not tears!!! Beautifully told story of inspiration reminding us all that's bikes are awesome and it's about enjoying them!!! Bless you lots and hope you continue to repair, heal and get fitter.
Well done! That was a great story and a nicely edited video. I hope you continue to make your way to a full recovery. Build back brick by brick - day by day. Wishing you the very best and thanks for sharing!

My wife and I raced Iceman. We waited for the Pros at the end to cheer for you and Macky at the finish. Much respect, you are awesome.
Never before has a bike channel has brought tears to my eyes. You are my new hero and inspiration, Syd!
Just know everyone is rooting for you Syd! Just the first step back to greatness!

What a great job. It was a pleasure seeing those custom jerseys in the woods that day. Your dad blew past me mid-way through the race. Definitely not wave 48 material! Great work out there!
Your mum & dad are so cool 😎

The Iceman! That was my very first mountain bike race back in 2000. Very exciting.
Why you gotta make me cry??? Love you Syd!!!

I've skipped the last couple Iceman. Thanks for making me want to do it again.
Wow, what great parents. You guys are very fortunate.
Good Karma.
Way to go Syd! Always awesome to see your parents racing! I liked the comment about hard work not being wasted but simply stored.
Way to go! I’m 4 years out from a broken hip. I’m nowhere near where I was and don’t expect I ever will be, but you’ve got me wanting to sign up for MonsterCross next year just to say I raced one last time. Congrats in your come back!

Congrats! Macky and Syd are so sweet. Macky said it all for us: so proud of you! My sweetie said the same when I finished my big ride in September. I spent almost as long training for that ride. Also, I was 100 days out and would not have physically been able to do it.
Way to go Syd! You're awesome!
Beautiful writing in this video. Really touching content. Heroic effort on the race Syd. Macky, you’re a badass!!
