Ohtani set a life goal for himself during high school, which was to one day join the Dodgers and win the World Series. He graduated high school in March 2013. And he will undoubtedly be influencing the next generation of players. The Dodgers not only had many famous Japanese pitchers when Ohtani was growing up, but they also had Japanese scouts visiting all over Japan. They are often the first MLB team to build relations with top Japanese players when in high school and university, which eventually paid off in the case of Ohtani. Mariners had Ichiro Suzuki and Yankees had Hideki Matsui, but neither team had long term marketing stategy like the Dodgers. The only thing I remember about Matsui with the Yankees was they didn't sign him the following season after being the MVP in the World Series. That certainly destroyed their image in Japan at that time because it's still mentioned in Japanese sports media today on why Sasaki shouldn't consider the Yankees.
I am a Dodgers fan since 1977. Since then I lived in Italy, South America and now in the UK. I carry the love for the team in my heart, literally around the world. There were times, at the beginning of the 80's when the only way to know the scores, was to go to find an American newspaper and read the results. There was no internet, no satellite discs. I think this limited the international development of baseball, since you really need to either play or to watch a lot of games before you start playing, and if there is nobody to play with, the only way is to watch and learn. Now, we have the tools, and now a team is using it, and coming out of the psicological lock that Baseball is an American sport. I think Dodgers are doing a great deal of good for the sport and its future. Think about for a moment and you will realise the immense potential of what they are doing.

Unfail advantage? No, not unfair...earned for having the foresight to see that Japan is a hotbed of Baseball interest. The Dodgers have known this since the mid-60s, when Walter O'Malley would arrange post-season games in Japan for the Dodgers against Japan's best teams.
