This is the second part of five episodes from a fly fishing trip chasing Atlantic salmon: "Fly fishing in the North" in 2020.
During this episode me and Gøran once again try the rapids at the upper part of the beat. Today's lesson - watch out for hanging trees by the river and slippery stones..

Nice videos and nice channel.
I think with losing fish it is sometimes a matter of using slightly larger hooks and using double hooks instead of treble (f.i. size 6 double instead of 8 treble).
I turn the double hooks upside- down when using double hooks with tubes. The next thing you can try is to use a "softer" medium fast rod or go down to a 8/9 instead of using a 9/10 DH rod.
Sometimes it is better to fish with a light drag setting and give the fish a little more time to turn with the fly before you lift into the fish. Then you can thighten the drag a little more.
I know from experience that this is easier said than done...Grilse have softer mouths and are masters in throwing hooks, that makes it sometimes difficult to keep fish pinned.

I am also a big fan of "Elveguiden" and fish in Finnmark since 2006 every year.
Wonderful rivers and still a lot of nice waters to explore.
I remember a week in 2014 when I hooked 7 fish the first two days and lost 4....Horrible short takers just nipping the fly.
I changed hooks, stripped the line a little faster on the last part of the swing, used a clear intermediate line instead of the floater the next five days. 4 more fish hooked and three landed.
We must accept to lose some fish but sometimes we have to change a few things to keep ourselves going.
Sadly, there are days when we can simply do nothing at all...
I hope that we can fish again for salmon this summer.

Hi, thank you 🙏 this movie was made before the release of the 4D compact lines :) the setup I was using was 4D Body F/S2 #9/10 26g with different types of 11g 15' tips. You’re welcome.

Det var en Mission 11’ #8, og måtte bare kjøpe en klump på Intersport i Mosjøen.
De hadde ikke helt passende line til stanga den gangen.

Slipper du all fisk ut? Hvoradan kan du fiske så tidlig? Er det i scotland?
Noe slipper vi ut og noe tok vi som mat:) er fra i fjor, men d kan ligne på en Skots elv, men d er d ikke :)

Det er en grunn til at du har en løkke, slipp den når fisken tar:)
Jeg fisker som regel uten løkke, mens Gøran fisker med løkke. Han fikk ikke noe mer med løkke enn jeg som dro til. Heller tvert imot.. så løkke eller ikke var ikke problemet.
Its not easy to hook fish when barb is squeezed in. I guess thats the real problem to all your lost fish??
It could’ve been one of the reasons, but our catch rate increased by a lot when we increased hook size during the last days:)
Du får mer kraft ut til fisken med en enhånds enn en to hånds, bare for å ha nevnt det.
Helt riktig det, men det er fortsatt enklere å styre en laks på en enhånds enn tohånds. Selv har jeg fisket 99% med enhånds de siste 20-årene så er fult klar over det.
Thanks for sharing. As someone who fishes salmon in Canada a lot, I'm surprised by how many salmon you killed, especially the last one. Is this simply a cultural difference?
Hi, thanks! Yes it’s a cultural difference, where we in Norway kill more fish than in Canada. In Norway we are not allowed to do pure c&r. However, on this trip we only killed the fish that was hooked in the gills (bleeding a lot). C&R on bleeding fish will probably have a higher mortality after a release. The strange thing on this trip, was that most of the fish we managed to land was hooked deep into the gills.. We ended up with some theories of why, and we sort of explain our theories in one of the next episodes. In my opinion I think we were using too small hooks (size 8-14 treble and single hooks), as we had a significant better hook rate and manage to hook the fish in the jaw when we increased the hook size. Previous years I have had no problems with hook size 8-14..
@@SalmonfishingNorway Thanks for the reply. When you say "not allowed" what do you mean? (Also, to be clear, not trying to be pushy, I'm honestly curious.) I understand what you mean about hooking fish in the gills. We don't use trebles here, and so that is not so much an issue. I also don't use heavy sink tips very often. Mostly, it is singles size 2-8, with some doubles 4-10. Anyway -- enjoyed your videos. I also have some about salmon fishing in Canada you can check out. I'll subscribe and keep watching. And thanks again for responding!
@@flyfishnewengland Thanks for the nice response:) I will follow you back and have a look at your videos :) in Norway, every river have their own regulations, but there are some rules that applies for them all. This includes that a river can not only do C&R (rule by the government), because of fish welfare. C&R is more and more practiced every year due to the declining stocks, but unfortunately due to culture and rules still most fish get killed in Norway. Normally I don’t hook this many fish in the gills. I think the problem was the small hooks that we were using, but It’s hard to know for sure.
