    Its a great idea for those of u who are bad mouthing it... a 6 cylinder diesel hosts a lot of options and opportunities for Ram buyers. If u don't like the engine, Than simply don't buy the truck with it. I think its awesome. Great gas milage, and a butt load of torque is great. I would want that engine in my Jeep if I bought one. But that Hemi in my opinion is best in the Ram 1500's

    what's with all the hater comments?! The rep clearly said they STILL HAVE the Cummins diesel in the heavy duty models. This smaller diesel engine is for the light duty models only, and you can still opt for petrol power, so wtf's up with all the complaining?! In any regard, this new engine is made by world renowned VM Motori in Italy. Move outside of the USA, and few would have heard about Cummins made engines. Europe builds the most high tech and refined diesels so my money is on this new unit rather than those loud, crude Cummins units.

      I totally agree with you. In the 90's, European cost of gasoline led most manufacturers to invest a lot on diesel technology, and now the great majority of euro customers drive diesel cars, which are fast, and price effective. Trust us and our technology.

      Personally, I don't haul much more than 3000 lbs. I drive a 2000 lb 2 seater car that gets up to 35 mpg freeway and usually 30 combined. But I'm a bit tired of the safety issues...but don't want to give up the mpg.
      This truck is a good solution for me

    This and only this type of engines is the right one for half ton trucks. 6 cylinder Diesels in in the ~3.0L area. Massive torque, great towing capacity and very very good mileage. Only the price is ridiculous. But that's not the engines fault...

  • @splewy
    @splewy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    IMO this engine really doesn't make sense. It costs around $3500 more than the 5.7L Hemi, yet offers less rated towing and payload capacity. It also costs slightly more than a comparably equipped F-150 Ecoboost, which offers far more towing and payload capacity. Granted the diesel Ram gets better fuel economy (Motor trend got 26 hwy with a 4x4/3.92 ED Ram, vs. 21 hwy for the 4x4/3.73 EB F-150), but with the higher cost of diesel, I wonder if it is really worth it.
    I personally think Ford has the right idea. Turbocharged gas direct injected engines are the way to go. Small diesels don't make much sense in the US. Our emissions regulations make them too expensive and choke too much power from them. Not to mention the cost of diesel fuel negates most of the fuel economy benefit.

    • @chasebarnett
      @chasebarnett 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      26 MPG with a full sized, 4 wheel drive truck with a 3.92 rear end and this doesn't make sense?
      Edit: I read your comment again, thought I should futher elaborate on my thoughts...
      Granted, the ford has a higher payload and towing rating, but I don't think that this will be the main focus for the Eco Diesel. I believe that this truck is aimed towards buyers who want a truck, but with economy still in mind. I had a 2012 Ram CC Sport that I traded after 4 months because I was driving 40k miles a year at the time. Buying that truck was a bad decision on my part. I loved the truck and hated to get rid of it, but it just made sense to do so. I traded it for a 13 Passat TDI until my driving slows down (and it finally has)
      I have a family ranch that I'm at every weekend. For me, this truck will still give me the capability of a truck, but with the fuel economy that I need without going broke.
      It may not match with the F150's numbers, but it is still a very capable truck that is worth considering for someone that would like that diesel fuel economy.
      I have a feeling that people will be seeing 28+ in real world driving... Passat is rated at 40 highway, I get 50+ all day long.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not when you're paying 60 cents more per gallon for fuel. A 4x4 3.73 Ecoboost F-150 can get 21mpg, which at $3.20 a gallon equals a cost per mile of 15.2 cents. The 4x4 3.92 Ram Eco Diesel gets 26mpg, which at $3.80 a gallon equals a cost per mile of 14.6 cents. Factor in the higher maintenance costs of a diesel and the cost to own those two trucks is virtually identical. The MSRPs are nearly identical as well.
      So basically with the Eco Diesel Ram, you're paying Ecoboost F-150 money for a truck that has essentially the same ownership costs, but has 2,000lbs less towing capacity and is 2 seconds slower 0-60 unladen.

      splewy Diesel is always more expensive in the winter when they have the shitty winter blends, but it seems like out here in chicago, gas goes higher in the summer time. diesel stays right around 3.90 all year, gas is around 3.40 in the winter and 4.20 in the summer.

    The Cummins can't be that important to you if you don't even know the proper name. Amazing how many people tout the Cummins and then....call it the Cummings.
    Also, Cummins doesn't have a diesel of this size, that's why they went this route. It would be pointless to use the 5.0L V8 version the Titan would get since it would defeat the purpose of what they're going for which was maximum fuel efficiency AND towing. The Cummins powerplant will probably put up decent mpg numbers but it won't come close to putting up upper 20's numbers like this does. A lot of clueless people complaining here it seems.

    You know Dodge really disappoints me now. Ford went through the economic downturn while not needing bailout money, GM took bailout money but managed to pay most back and still retained the GM name, Dodge goes through the same situation and ends up being owned by goddamn Fiat.
    I'm sure Fiat probably does certain things okay, but you can't look at Dodge the same anymore, especially not their trucks.

      Depends - best ever was 28.8mpg on a 10hr round trip drive from WI to IN and back. Normal averages have been in the 26mpg range as I do drive 85% hwy driving. Worst has been over the winter, been getting about 22-24mpg depending on the tank since we've been between 0-32*F outside. Got about 27mpg on my trip from WI to FL and back.
      I have a couple videos on my page too, including a cold-start video if you're interested.

Ironic, I live in europe and if i need any part From USA for my old 1st series Dodge Durango 5,9 R/T, it takes maximum 9-10 days and for price (INCLUDING shipping which is HUGE), which is less than if i go personally in near part store for shitty italian engines. • @MudSnow
      @MudSnow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      manrightchea You are speaking of reliability problems of many years ago. Nowadays the brands you cite sell a lot of cars in European market and they have been awarded by international committee. Have a look at the rewards won by Fiat gasoline Multiair Engine, or by Alfa Giulietta itself.
      By the way, Fiat group was the first one to develop and sell common rail technology for diesel engines.

    • @kellyfontes7757
      @kellyfontes7757 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MudSnow Perhaps they are better today and I don't doubt they are, however you are talking about European Markets. I live in the Southwestern United States, and the surface temp off the asphalt in the sun in the summer can be 140 degrees. So to that point is there a turbochargers on this diesel? Again something that runs hotter in a hot climate. When I drive Vegas to LA or worse Phoenix, the temp can read 120 degrees. Alot of people out here are very curious about this engine as an option to the 5.0 Cummings that is going to be in the new Nissan Titian.

      what a stupid argument. "This pickup is trash. Complete trash" Why dont you actually say something intelligent and elaborate on why you think its bad. Diesels get Prius- Type gas milage, have less soot in the exhast which equals cleaner air, and diesels last about 30 percent longer than a petroleum gas engine

    Mr Hasher, this is not personal and thanks for the 38 years servicing Mack Trucks. I do know what liners are, most larger Diesel Engines and Aluminum Block engines have either cast or pressed in liners. Also, the squirters are used to Squirt Oil up underneath the pistons to help cool and prolong the life of pistons. Finally, you as a Diesel Mechanic ought to know the benefits of high torque values as found in the Mack MP7, 8 & 10 series engines. Good luck and safe driving.

    Wow very very cool you guys are the first to have any kind of review on this truck I can dig it !! What I can also dig is this half ton diesel truck I am a bleed blue through and through Ford guy but this is a very cool segment !! I hope this goads other manufactures to bust out the smaller diesels the ecoboost f-150 is a totally different animal so it hard to compare the 2 so come on ford and Chevy 1/2 ton diesels pretty pretty please with a cherry on top...

    Drove one yesterday, very impressive. Yes you can get 30 mpg, even with some horsing around. Truck I drove was a Tradesman, surprisingly nice interior for a base truck. Am I trading my 200,000 mile hemi in on one? Nope, as long as I can afford the gas, gonna keep driving it. Cabin is spooky quiet!

    i actually like how you guys give a "worst case scenario" 0-60 time basically for REAL WORLD. so many haters dont realize.. 9 times out of 10.. when you get into a 0-60 situation, it isnt ideal conditions. when most editors test a 0-60 its with a professional driver that weighs 100 lbs, barely 1 gallon of gas, optimal weather, perfect track conditions at low altitude. real world, is MUCH different from that. read another companies 0-60 time, and compare to this one, gives you a range to expect.

    You are right, Chevy put the turbo in the Silverado every year from 1990 to 1999. You are so smart! Because those were not re-badged 3/4 ton trucks. Sart, smart, smart.

  • @kevin9c1
    @kevin9c1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    GM had the 6.2 and 6.5L as their light duty diesel all the way up to 1999. The later versions of each were actually not bad considering they were made to be light duty diesels (much smaller and lighter engine than the 7.3L PSD or 5.9L Cummins).

  • @svisek
    @svisek 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would also note that the statement that there haven't been diesel light-duty trucks available in the U.S. market since the late '70s/early '80s is incorrect. GM offered 6.5-liter diesel engines in light-duty trucks (Chevrolet and GMC 1500 C/K pickups, 1500/2500 Suburbans, and even two-door Tahoes and Yukons), as late as 1999 in some cases.

  • @VToldsMotoShow
    @VToldsMotoShow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe it is not Fiat's engine but Mercedes-Benz's 3.0 CRD engine. Roman, you even mentioned about the engine coming from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has been there since 2005 - Chrysler 300C also received it for the first time in 2005 and it's the same engine.

    the cummins engine nissan is using for their trucks was originally devoloped for ram, when they got the estimated mileage numbers for the engine which was around 23-25 mpg, they scrapped it and went with the current v6. nissan picked up the v8 and will be using it in i believe their 2015 model year.
