Hey Paul! Cool to see this collaboration with Poetry on Plastic! It is doubtful that Chris and I will ever get down to Houston. I believe we will be going to Dallas in March for two things: one for a family-related furniture drop-off and the other to check out the record show there. It's a bummer you were underwhelmed by Cactus. There's a semi-new channel called Nicknight's Mix and I think he lives in Houston area and he was talking about some of the stores in the area maybe a month ago. Maybe some of the stores more on the outskirts.
Oh yeah, I noticed with Texas overall, the bigger cities there's a lot of stores, sure, but used sections are so picked over because of the demand. I still stand by the Pacific Northwest for my best digs ever. Love the banter between you two on these pickups! Hope you do another collab. 🙂

Hello Hanna and no problem about not hitting Houston. You really have to have to have a good reason to come here and record shopping should not be one of them ;) Houston is not really a place which I would consider a real tourist destination. I know some native Houstonians would rag on me for making that statement but outside of the Johnson Space Center, there isn't really anything here that would make Houston a must see destination. Austin has the great music scene, 6th street, and the hill country. San Antonio has the River Walk, Sea World, several Caves, etc. Dallas has a few things like a wonderful Arboretum, Aquarium, Texas School Book Repository, etc. Houston, sadly, doesn't have the same level of variety of things to do. Being the 4th largest city in the United States makes that all kind of sad if you ask me. It's location in the state isn't the greatest either. You really have to go out of your way to hit the city.
I am with you on the Pacific Northwest, at least what I can see from what you and others have shown. That said, I would like to see the Austin Record Convention sometime, when life gets a back a bit more to normal. With the new job, I might be able to travel a bit more...again, once life gets a little more normal. There is a periodic space symposium in Seattle, that I may get the opportunity to hit. Last time, I was in Seattle it was for work related reasons and since most shops close at 5:00 PM, I wasn't able to hit any record stores which really bummed me out. I so wanted to hit Easy Street Records.
I haven't heard of Nicknight's Mix. I'll have to check him out. There have been a couple of other Houston TH-camrs but they didn't last long. Maybe about a year before they shut their channel's down. It would be nice to find another kindred TH-cam spirit in the area though.

@@BarakaPDub Yes, you MUST check out the Austin Record Convention at some point. With the pandemic still ongoing, we haven't decided if we're going to hit up the Dallas or the Austin show. Either way, we have to go to Texas again to drop off some furniture to a family member with a trailer.
With Seattle, I heard a bunch of stores closed permanently due to the pandemic. What a shame as that is a top spot for record shopping. Olympia still has my favorite store with Rainy Day Records. Tacoma has badass stores as well.
Yeah, Houston is so far out of the way and a further drive from everything else that I can't see us getting down there for anything anytime soon anyway. I think we'd love to try to hit up other spots this year like Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Michigan area and possibly the northeast as I've never been. Happy New Year!

I promise, you're not missing anything in Houston ;) Hopefully, the family member isn't too far off from either Austin or Dallas. Maybe you'll get to see a few interesting things along the way. I can't recommend the Dallas Arboretum enough if you're swinging through there. It's huge and a nice escape from the bustle of the city.
I have more friends now moving to the Seattle area to work for Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. He's angling to put up his own space station and I will be losing one of my employees to him this month.
I would like to check out some of the stores in Minnesota. Are there any VC'ers from Minnesota? I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.

Hello Mazzy and a belated Happy Hanukah! Houston really isn't the destination for many people unless your in the energy sector. I personally would not vacation here but if you do ever get this way, I would love to give you a tour of the Space Center, if they allow us to do private tours again. COVID really killed it for us and since we're trying to avoid getting the astronauts in training sick, there are all kinds of restrictions in place.
Occasionally, there is a Space Conference held in Seattle and with my new position, I might be able to go there...again, COVID pending. If I can swing it, I might extend my stay by a day or two just to hang out and see all of the sights I couldn't see on my last business trip there.

The Hendrix sold out here quick so I missed out on it. Was only able to grab one of the last copies of Motörhead - Live in Madrid. Modern Harmonic put out an album just of all the June Tyson featured material. It’s short but absolutely fantastic. Sun Ra’s albums on Philly Jazz are accessible. Lanquidity especially.

If I make it up back into Houston central, I'll try and score you a copy of the Hendrix. They had some thirty copies of it remaining when we were there the day after. That really surprised me. I didn't know about the June Tyson album. I am going to have to look for that one! BTW - Do you have Andrew Hill's Black Fire and McCoy Tyner's Expansions on Tone Poet? If you don't, let me know. I ended up with spare copies of both.

Thanks for the video guys. Sounds like you had some fun digging the bins!
As far as Sun Ra, Im far from the biggest free jazz guy, but to me **if** Im going to listen to Sun Ra, then I dont see the point of focusing much on his hard bob traditional albums so much. The point of Sun Ra IS his far out stuff.
To me its easier to split his catalogue up into city periods. Chicago, New York and Philly periods.
Supersonic Jazz*; Jazz in Sillouhette; Interstellar Lowways*
    Supersonic jazz yes!
NYC Period: Other Planes of There
    The Magic City
Philly Period: Solar Myth Approach 1-2; Astro Black; Unity
Ive found those to be his better "out there" albums with getting into the crazy near accension coltrant like sound. Which Im not really a fan of.
What saves Sun Ra from being unlistenable for me is the rootsy sound he has. A more tribal feel. Community feel. If that makes sense.
Anyway, fun convo to watch and great insight as always!

Thanks John and giving me some tips on Sun Ra's catalog. You're far more versed in his work than I am and I do agree about going the Ascension route. I dig Coltrane but his later albums completely lose me and I just can't go there. I will give a couple of your recommended albums a sample. Thanks so much for the great comments and Happy New Year!
