How to Install a Curbside Mailbox and Post

Well Tony, after waiting for over a year on several friends promising me to install a new mailbox post, after watching your video, I did it my self!!!!! Thanks for the step by step instructions. Other than digging that hole, it was pretty easy. Thanks for sharing.!!
This is not the best way to install a post. Depending on where you live your frost line will be different. If you don't dig the hole deep enough your mailbox may start to shift on you over time. Rocks should have been added to the bottom of the hole for drainage, otherwise, the bottom of your post may start to rot. Adding cement like Tony did is fine, however, you can buy the bags where you just fill the hole with cement then add water - much easier. It's a good idea not to go all the way to the top with cement - leave a few inches for soil to cover up the cement. Check with your local postal service on how far from the curb your mailbox should be before digging the hole.
to avoid buying a wheel barrow, etc. just use the quick-crete you pour right into the hole with water and be done with it.

You should add some stone to the bottom of the hole before the cement. Also don't over fill the hole with cement and then you can cover it with dirt.
I add a few screws on each side of the post and on the bottom so as to grab the concrete forever.

I like plastic mailboxes better than metal mailboxes on wooden posts. one day, i am going to move to Los Angeles California, and i am going to buy me a house online with 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a hallway closet in between the bedroom and bathroom, a clean basement, a garage, a fenced backyard, and berber carpeting through out the entire living room, hallway, and bedroom, and i am going to buy a plastic mailbox that opens on both ends and put it on the other side of the sidewalk next to the drive-way!
Love the post hole digger. So much better than the clam shell type. The only thing those are good for are busting up your fingers.

You can rent post hole diggers for a few bucks a day.
How long you wait depends on the concrete. Typically you could begin work in 2 to 3 hours. Just go easy and try not to move the post. Thanks

Someone please help me answer this question: my family building the house rn and it's almost done, so before I'm going to installing new mailbox do I need to go to post office and make sure I have right placement and stuff?
i know that mixing cement before pouring is the correct way but u can also just dump the bag in then add water with water hose directly to the hole.no mixing required. good quality vid though.
Manny, There is a type of concrete that works like that. But most require mixing. Check the packages and get the type you want. Thanks
what's the life expectancy for one of these mailboxes?
darn I just put in my post into the concrete and when I got in to see the next part of this video I realized I got the wrong post. I got the one that has the ledge on it. Maybe I should just chainsaw it off? I got the same exact mailbox as you too lol
You could dig a little bit more to not get the concrete all the way up so you could put some dirt around and hide the concrete and you can get some grass around the pole and not see the concrete
Hey Jim, If that post it too tall, taking a chainsaw to it is exactly what I would do. Just measure twice and be safe with that chainsaw.

Is the treated post better than cedar?
Why not take a bucket and screw in the 4x4 from the bottom of the bucket. Then place that in your hole and out the cement in that? Then when you need to replace it, you can lift it out.

Hey Zesty, It's a 6" post. 2 feet of it are buried in the hole.
Plastic construction will not last over the years, the sun will destroy it in no time. The only thing I like is the post digger, where can I get one of those?

A few things....don't overfill the hole with cement! Two....have a brick box installed (if your home's aesthetics fit that look) lasts longer and looks better. Lastly, think security! Install a mailbox that is lockable. Overall - decent little video.
