Malefor is a living lesson on what sometimes the effects of overly praising someone in the youth can have on a person
He is essentially Spyro if he let his power and talent go all over his head.
This is the one of reasons why The Legend of Spyro trilogy are my favorite games, the lore is so fantasizing.

Boy, I don't know if it's just rose tinted glasses or anything, but Malefor is one of my favorite villains of all time. As I was a small kid and LoS was one of the first series to introduce me to dark, serious stories, I couldn't help but really fear and hype up this guy. When I finally met him, I was not dissapointed. It was like you took Sauron and the Lord of Darkness from Legend and made them into a freaking dragon. And gosh I loved his story; the vague backstories and creepy ruins hinting at a darker past were one of LoS's best touches.

I feel Malefor- had he not been born the purple dragon of prophecy- would have been of the earth element. His ability to form crystals, and raise grublins and the golems all hold a very terrestrially themed form of savantism that doesn't seem to coincide with the jack-of-all-trades nature of the purple dragon.
Yes, he can harness the other elements as he wills, but his core focus seems to be earth and dark aether.
It makes me wonder if this savantism is what drew him to the lore of the golems and the Destroyer in the first place, and his later claim of what his destiny as the purple dragon entailed.
I want a remaster of the Legend of Spyro trilogy. I grew up playing them
One thing I do hope that if we get a remake of TloS is a more flushed out backstory of malefor and we hear his backstory to a degree earlier in A New Begining. A deeper background of the war a time of unsteady peace for a time untill spyros egg is laid.
Do you think Dark Spyro can beat Malefor? I mean, considering Dark Spyro is very powerful, as he was able to turn Gaul into stone and destroy him, and also destroy the whole Mountain of Malefor, do you think Dark Spyro, would be able to turn Malefor to Stone and destroy him just like Gaul? Dark Spyro in TEN is very powerful.
@@liviosellone9954 maybe maybe not. My bias for spyros says spoyro but realistically its a toss up. Malefor has a 10000+ years maybe even more on spyro. Thats a lot of time to get gud.
@@Loki1701e I think Dark Spyro would be able to kill Malefor. I mean, Spyro was able to defeat Cynder, why wouldn't he be able to destroy Malefor? Dark Spyro is quite strong, even if he's a bit slow to kill the bigger enemies like Gaul, he's revealed to be quite unstoppable.
I personally haven't been really watching a lot of these longer lore videos but this one caught me off guard. I love malefor, and while he's not my favourite villain in the series, that honour goes to Ripto, he is the most interesting one I think. can't wait for part 2 hopefully soon!
That's quite alright, to be honest I've gotta start making some shorter videos, since well... the longer ones can be a grind both to make and watch. Hopefully though I can get something out, and I'll keep an eye out for smaller topics just so there's some more bite size lore videos :D. For me, Malefor I think has a special place among villains in Spyro, yes he's probably not the best per say but yeah I'd say storywise he's the most interesting out of them all. Hope to get part 2 out soon, and not take a month or two making it... heh

What I really like about malefor is that he’s basically a more darker evil version of Spyro since they’re both purple, but unfortunately wasn’t the first dragon villain. That honest goes to red from a hero’s tail, as well as shadow legacy even though I don’t like that game at all! And while I liked him I felt more could’ve been done with him. Do you agree too?
I personally believe the legends of spyro incarnation of Malefor is the darkest and most evil villain in the whole franchise

you point out some interesting thoughts. The dragons immense skill and magical prowess would explain how Malefor was able to make the green snake collars, along with the structure holding his essence in the Convexity. This also explains how the Cheetah chieftain knew how to chain Spryo and Cynder to a pole. Speaking of the chieftain, I think he was exaggerating about Malefor's past. He may have heard the stories that was told to Spyro from the Chronicler, hence why he jumped to conclusions. Not to mention the chieftain has hatred towards the dragons for the war to begin with. All and all, this was a great video Lore of the Dragon. please continue with your work.

I'm still impressed about the star power of the cast that Legend of Spyro had. Sure Malefor's voice had that distortion filter over it, but getting Mark Hamill to be your series big bad was amazing! This series is also why Elijah Wood is the voice of my Spyro.
Also, Malefor's ending speech is basically etched into my mind because so many fanfics reuse the DotD ending to start their stories lol.

These Lore videos are a great source of enjoyment and brain storming. Its still so great to see how many people are still invested in the Legend of Spyro series now more than a decade after it ended. I've jumped back into Spyro fan fiction and am in the process of writing one myself, which includes a lot of the unused/speculated story elements we have learned from Jared Pullen. Keep up the great work and happy new year!

The final boss fight with Malefor is my favorite fight in the franchise, the stakes, the score and atmosphere mind-blowing (to me). Also Spyro and Cynder didn't really defeat Malefor, after the beam attack Malefor got up completely unharmed, he was only stopped when the dragon spirits pulled him into the gem. And I believe he was destroyed in the gem because of the purple beams that come the gem.
So, at least to me he was defeated. Not so much in a way of just taking him down, but the mere action of overpowering him was were he was defeated, him getting dragged into the crystal just ensured his fate. The gem from what I've seen wasn't really destroyed. From what we see at the end of the same cutscene this all happens in, Spyro and Cynder are still standing above the crystal, which is very much intact despite the lights that shot out of it

Malefor was, to say it in some way, the Spyro of his generation: A purple dragon who was talented with the use of his powers and had the approval of the elders....except Malefor let his power go all over his head, eventually succumbing to self-doubt and darkness.
It wasn’t malefors lust for power that was the problem it was more his pride

One of the most mysterious and most powerful villains, not only of the Spyro lore, also of the entire gaming verse.
I love Malefor, he is really a mighty villain with such unknown story about him.
The fact that he is a purple dragon, like Spyro, adds more to his mystery, that a creature supposed to bring a new world, fell into the darkness and is commited to destroy the world instead.
I really hoped that in DoTD we got to learn more of Malefor's life and eventual corruption, but sadly nothing but a few hints.
And for a character with few known facts, you made really amazing with exploring and also theorizing his lore.

So you mentioned multiple times when talking about Cynder that she was corrupted for twelve years. Is that speculation, Jared Pullen head cannon, or fact? I don't recall ever hearing about a definitive number of years regarding either Spyro or Cynder.
Also, do you have plans for a lore video about the Cheetah of Avalar?
So, for Cynder, I might’ve gotten that fact wrong. I’m not entirely sure where, but somewhere the fan wiki says Cynder was corrupted a few years after she hatched, or at least implies that though I’ve come not to trust the wiki entirely on lesser known details. But, both the games and Jared Pullen from what I’ve seen don’t state anything on when she was corrupted. Because of that I’m thinking that it was around the time she hatched, and could’ve been around the same time Spyro hatched. If I find something contradicting that, I’ll be sure to put in an extended thoughts video like I did with the Cynder videos. Also I do not have plans at the moment for that subject. Though I can throw a plan together and see what I can do for a video like that
I just wish that Malefor would sound more like Firelord Ozai from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Both were voiced by Mark Hamill, but they made Malefor's voice barely understandable.

@Ben Pratt Dark Spyro has been shown to be able to lift rocks IN Dawn of the Dragon, which means he has telekinesis. Also, if you use his melee attacks, he attacks repeatedly the enemy, and is invicible while attacking with his melee attacks, they don't even use his mana. Let's not forget, that he managed to defeat Gaul. That guy could have killed him in just 3 hits, yet, he did manage to kill him. So, i'd say he's a good match. Although Malefor is older than Spyro obviously, i think Dark Spyro's powers, could technically stop him. Also the wiki describes Dark Spyro as a nearly unstoppable force of nature. He can kill an ape, a small one in less than one second, the medium ones, in 2 or 3 seconds, and the bigger ones, in like 9 seconds. He can also beat Skabb in 8 seconds. He also beat Gaul, in one or two minutes, which isn't bad. As for the other enemies, it takes less than one minute, to erase those idiots from existence with him, unlike normal Spyro, which could take one minute to kill a huge ape. Let's not forget that he canonically crushed the whole Mountain of Malefor, not only killed Gaul and turned him into stone, but he also obliterated the whole Mountain of Malefor. Furthermore, as you can see in the gameplay, he can also kill undead soldiers, or trolls, and even ghosts, like the ones seen in the pirate ship. He can already kill something, that's already dead. How is that not powerful enough? Sorry if i wrote an entire essay, but i just wanted to point out, that, Dark Spyro, is not feeble, he's got impressive powers, despite his small size.
@Ben Pratt You have to remember that in DOTD, he got dragged down and sealed away forever into the crystal core by the spirits. Despite Spyro and Cynder's efforts, none of their attacks did defeat him, but those spirits, dragged him down and sealed him into the crystal core. Honestly, Malefor, is not as powerful as some characters, i don't think he's stronger than Goku, he's powerful, but i don't think that he's the most OP character ever existed. Well, Dark Spyro, he's powerful enough, although he's small, he's quite potent. He's actually stronger than the dragons guardians, even though they're much older than him, and he could defeat them easily. He can also easily kill big enemies such as Skabb, or even Gaul, as i pointed out previously. What stops him from stopping well, Malefor, with his melee attacks or fury attacks? He's invicible while executing his melee attacks, although, his melee combat, is slow to kill the enemies, he could slowly manage to stop him. His fury attacks are no joke either. I mean, if some spirits, dragged him down in the crystal core, in like, 5 seconds, why wouldn't Dark Spyro, be able to defeat him?
@Ben Pratt I wonder if Dark Spyro could technically beat Goku, or Thanos. I know it's kinda dumb, but considering, that Malefor, a powerful dragon, gave him his powers, he could have a chance against Goku or MCU Thanos, if he spams his melee attacks or uses his fury attacks repeatedly. He also has telekinesis, if he lifts rocks on the ground, it's obvious, that he has telekinesis. So he could attack those two, with his mind alone.
@Ben Pratt Never read the comics, but how strong Thanos is in the comics? While in the MCU, Dark Spyro, or Malefor, could beat him, in the comics, is he really THAT powerful?

I, actually, wonder what would've happened if the Elders/Guardians didn't Banished Malefor from his home, maybe, he would've done Good Things while still Ruling everything under his Control, I can see that as a Good Ending, even though, I suppose, it would not be a Good Ending in the eyes of everyone, for example, the Cheetahs.
Here are my ideas is Malefor was in Spyro 4. Let's say in the beginning of the game it tells the tale of the past that happens thousands of years ago talking about the legend of the purple dragon then they will talk about an evil dragon named Malefor that once tried to destroy the world but was defeated by the legendary hero who is the second purple dragon and was then sealed away in a crystal that's mentioned in TLOS. Eventually the story of the hero became legend but as time went by it eventually became myth then....forgotten as times has changed and so leads to the previous Spyro from reignited. As for Malefor well...let's say either Ripto or Red from A Hero's Tale somehow discovered a fossil of an ancient dragon trapped in crystal (which is a skeleton by now) but his evil spirit still remains and tells him to find something to resurrect him and you will be reworded. The rest will pretty much be Malefor returning but in a new form but will also be a final boss depending how Spyro 4 will play out.

Am I the only one who believes that Spyro and Cynder truly died at the end of dawn of the dragon? Spyro had to become the new core of the earth to prevent it from completely breaking. He did this by becoming a Crystal with Cynder again. “Spyro, when a dragon dies he does not truly leave this world. His spirit lives on, binging itself with nature, offering hope for the future” the secret ending you may ask? I personally believe that’s their spirits free “binding themselves with nature” eternally free spirits.
Eh not exactly, there’s a few ways people tend to view the ending of Dawn of the Dragon, I just subscribe to the idea they lived based on my own findings
Personally Skylanders doesn't even count as the main Spyro game. I never liked the franchise due to its poor designs and had nothing to do with Spyro to begin with HOWEVER....if TLOS will be connected with the previous Spyro from Reignited Trilogy which in my opinion takes place a few thousand years later in the future perhaps Malefor should return in Spyro 4 by possibly being resurrected becoming like one of the elder dragons from the first game.

That’s something I’ve deduced, from what I can tell that temple as is described is lifted directly from Warfang, plus knowing of the importance of Warfang I imagine that would also be used to instill some form of intimidation
@@loreofthedragon Hmmm, that's really interesting, and that would make sense seeing as we don't see the same designs in the floating isles as we do at the original temple. The intimidation makes sense too. That's cool, that's an idea I haven't heard before.

In LoS no, iirc it was mentioned in multiple places it was mentioned that it was probably a thousand years, or at least that’s the conclusion we’ve gotten. Plus dragons have been noted (in non canon stuff perhaps) that dragons live for much longer than us, so perhaps it can be assumed that a generation is a different length to us as well
@@loreofthedragon Well yeah, possibly... but then what about the year of the dragon? Which by default is every 12 years... so if that was the case... then it would be at least instead every 120 years...?

@@loreofthedragon Aye, we do need MOAR info about this, the thing is... there hasn't been any more info from Mr. Pullen or from anyone else related to any of the dev teams from any of the TLoS games... which I find curious...

From what I've seen it convinces me that this hypothetical remake/remaster could very possibly give the right chance for this version of the saga to shine once more :o
