    Good to see Halfpenny Green - Thanks Jon. 60 years ago, my parents took me to an airshow there, and despite not having much money, they paid for me to do a circuit (on my own aged 8) in a Dragon Rapide. From that day, I said if I could afford it, I would learn to fly and 7 years ago, I fulfilled that childhood dream.

    “ The Green “ as I call it is my home away from home airfield when visiting my homeland from my incarceration in Australia . It’s a fantastic airfield as you portrayed , I have wonderful memories going back over 50 years of HG . I could fill a book with stories . I’ve also used the Red Lion a few times , a great watering hole with local ales and serving good food too . Thank you Jon , however , I’m now more homesick than ever .😀

    I'm fond of EGBO. I visited here on my solo XC and they were extremely friendly and accomodating. Met my mother for a coffee who burst into tears when I got out of the aircraft.

    Fantastic airfield, incredibly friendly and a real hive of GA activity. I was very privileged and proud to fly there as part of my QXC for my PPL. Good memories!

    Did 40 hours there back in 73. There used to be a scrap Avro Anson you could crawl about in, sadly gone. There was a guy in our group who, in the Red Lion, could down a pint in 3secs, hmm catching isn’t it.😂

    Glad you mentioned how friendly they are. I went awry on my first solo and Clive the FISO couldn't have been nicer! They're so lovely to students and the whole place has always seemed welcoming. My original school collapsed...but ended up joining a new one that opened there (with familiar people) rather than switch locations 😂

    If you like a cafe under the control tower, with balcony included you should pop into Sleap airfield. Busy GA field,usually lots to see including a few warbirds, RAF helicopters doing circuits in the week and cheap fuel.

    I did many, many circuits there during my training and I too visited Halfpenny Green when I did my Qualifying Cross Country!

    Another great film. I was prompted to go through my logbook, Jon, and discovered I visited Wolverhampton in June 2005 on our way back from Caernarfon after circling Snowdon in a C42. Some friends operated the Ikarus Agency from the airfield. I might put Halfpenny Green on my goto list again after seeing your film, thanks.

    FISO were so helpful when I visited and had a fault, fixed it then had to return due to poor visibility. Can't thank them enough, and the car, motorbike and aeroplane mechanics there - used then all! A right proper nightmare, just like that bath scene Jon!!
    My suggestion.... Visit Swansea, South Wales, do your review, then I'll pick you up and bring you over to old park farm in my Skyranger (your piper won't get in here) and then you can review our farm strip at the same time 👍👍💪💪

    An unusual TH-cam video where I get to see my house, one of my favourite places and a few planes I've flown ;) (Edit, oh even a nice taxi-by of the one I did my PPL in!) Great video as always and a great series

    Also outside controlled airspace with plenty of class g to the west, an ideal refuelling / pee break between London and Ireland. 16/34 also long enough for a Falcon 50.

    3:28 Perranporth Airfield in Cornwall I believe still has its original WWII control tower, and the cafe at the airfield is also underneath the ATC area on top.

    Nice informative video, thank you. From it's RAF days, flying the Botha, that would explain the mortuary!! Only being a sim pilot, I do have an excellent freeware of EGBO. It could be on the visit list enroute to North Wales later this year, I just love antique/curio shops!

    Gosh, hotel chains I avoid like the plague, we should support indie hotels, b&b. It can take an hour or so researching an area but that's how I find some real gems, especially with the online world and street view. Always worth the effort. Will the antique shop put an old curiosity like me on their shelves, perhaps I've passed my sell-by date? 🙃

    • @TheFlyingReporter

    Excellent video John, much like yourself I usually go for the typical large chain hotels, I especially like the review of these smaller places.
    Unfortunately the "TH-camrs" event was cancelled the other year, which we had booked in to attend at HG ..... do you know if they are going to try and organise this event again?
    Keep up the good work 👍🏻

    £10 landing fee for my Eurostar. Very reasonable. EGTO Rochester take note! £20 and no cafe (or a poor one on the rare occasions it's open)

    I visited Halfpenny Green on my qualifying cross country, coming from Liverpool, so I requested and was given a straight-in approach to runway 16, far simpler than all that overhead join nonsense!
    There was a lot of parachuting activity, mostly making their first jump, and many must have been very nervous judging by the agricultural aroma in the toilets! Be warned!

    Small correction, sadly only 2 hard runways now since a Viper ripped up 10/28 on takeoff in 2017. th-cam.com/video/gX3_mQZ4gY8/w-d-xo.html There is still a short grass 10/28 suitable for micro lights. Learners to fly here and, whilst my club is now at Sleap, I fly from here several times a summer with friends on European adventures

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. There are 3 hard runways - one is notamed closed - due to reopen in a matter of weeks, hence why it's included here.

    • @mikelang58
      @mikelang58 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheFlyingReporter Well that is very good news🙂👍. I know they had said they were planning to get it open again but was still no sign of anything when last there in December.

    • @grainnemurphy
      @grainnemurphy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikelang58 It's been slow but definitely had work done and looking good

    • @TheDodgerUK
      @TheDodgerUK ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFlyingReporter Love all your work but .... hmmm ... Pooleys AFE and the Aerodrome Chart only show 2 hard runways. The NOTAM is not for the temporary closure of hard Runway 10/28 - in fact the NOTAM refers to the hard runway as 'disused'. So I think it is actually incorrect at the opening of the video to describe the airfield as having 3 hard runways - it doesn't. This could cause someone a problem? Maybe check with the airport what you should be stating about the hard runways at the start of the video? Or maybe I have it wrong? What do you think?

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aerodrome and I discussed this before publication. 10/28 hard reopens in about 4 weeks. It is currently closed while finishing touches are put to it. Clearly a check of the notams indicates this it's currently closed so I really don't see the problem.
