When you had disconnected the tail gate light, did the position light stay on if you started the car too? My entire right side is out, but flash on/off when unlocking. If I disconnect the tail gate light the position light comes on again, and stay on, but only until I start the engine. Then the position light will shut down again after 10 seconds. I tried to switch the tail gate lights too. If I take the right side tail gate light and connect on the left side where everything works as normal. The right side tail gate light will work as normal together with the left side position light. But the left side tail gate light will not work if connected to the right side. If the right side tail gate light was the issue, shouldn't the issue have transferred to the left side when switching over the tail gate light? I felt pretty confident the tail gate light wasn't the issue as the issue remained on the right side when switching them over thinking the position light was the issue, but after seeing this I feel less sure..
Hi, ok, I don't remember If I started the car and the position lights were shut down. Based on what you say with swapping left/right, it sounds like something else is the problem (cables?). But I don’t know how the system detects these fault lights and shuts down. I would borrow a tailgate light or perhaps buy a new and try since it's not so expensive.
Thank you, @Scythes, for this reply. I had the idea to test the same, as my issue exactly the same with switching car on part. You have saved a lot of my time. But have you finally define what was the root cause?
Thx for the video, it helped a lot. Today appeared the same problem on my V90, a temporary solution was to dry off the tail-light using a hairdryer. But I think, the whole light should be changed in the near future
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I have the same issue with water in one of the position lights. I took it out and dried it, got it to work but didn't take long before it died again. I am also located in Sweden, where did you buy a replacement light from?
Nice to hear! I bought it at a local Volvo dealer, Bilia. They had it in stock so very convenient and quite ok price, in the say €150 range if I remember correct.
Tack för hjälpsam video! Nr 1 - när båda yttre positionsljusen blinkar till... kan det vara värt att byta ut samma belysning då eller vet du om det finns något annat man bör kika på?
I have disconnected the tail light, and it is on. Left it disconnected why waiting for the part to arrive, but when I turn the ignition on it goes off. Is it still the tail light?
The build quality of these cars is utterly dreadful. I've a 6.5 year old one and a 19 year old corolla, the corolla never has any of the constant annoying issues this car has. Wouldnt buy another volvo with someone else's money. They are absolute criminals when it comes to charging for repair of this stuff too.
Does the new replacement have a different design, to better protect it from rain / snow buildup? Also, curious if anyone has just applied some silicon caulk to improve the seal... seems like something like this should work, no?
I have the problem that all lights are perfectly OK on unlock but as soon as motor is running both right-side tail light parts (vertical on body and horizontal on tailgate) turn off. Anybody know root cause? I can't see any moisture in lights and only right side affected..
Thanks for placing the largest watermark in history in this video. Super helpful!
I agree, it's quite annoying. At least now we know which video editing software to not download.
Stort tack Mattias! Efter en begränsad julhelg fortsätter ledigheten nu med fungerande bakljus och utan $$$ €€€ SEK verkstadsbesök.

Same problem with the water condensation. It turns off sporadically.
I thing the big rear light need a better seal , mines have a lot of condensation inside
Maeby you can do a video how to replace the big light

@@mattiaspalm4231 150 Euro for a new one is not bad at all especially when they are charging the same price for a used one from the scrap yard.

Tack! Vet inte. För mig var det positionsljusen på luckan som ställde till det så de yttre blinkade till. Men det kanske finns andra fel man kan ha.

thank you for this video. Is there no need for coding the light / secure some form of connection to Volvo diagnostic at a Volvo dealer?
Correct, I didn't do anything else than swapping the light.
thanks!@@mattiaspalm4231

asking me the same. Once i installed the new one, would be nice to not handle with this problem again
Tack

Nice. This will probably save me $1000
