I remember back in 1994, i begged my parents to buy me a SNES with Donkey Kong Country for Christmas but they couldn't afford to buy it so they offered me Donkey Kong on Game Boy (the 1981 arcade game remake) then for my birthday they bought me DK Land i was so happy to enjoy this mini DKC ! Great memories.

ghallium I got a Game Boy as a birthday gift in 1993 in the official case with Tetris, a large, rechargable battery, headphones and link cable (for the games compatible with it), and later on, a bunch of other games. Great memories, playing Donkey Kong in the backseat and my sister playing Kirby's Dreamland on hers. After 28 years, my Game Boy works fine - adjusting volume isn't as precise as when it was new, though.

1:07:37 that has got to be the dirtiest trick pulled in this game. It's the only secret I didn't find on my own becaue I didn't know you could blow up the oil drums...

I wanted this game to be good, but it really sucks.
Reminder that the premise of the game's plot was that Donkey and Diddy made a bet with Cranky to prove that they could still have fun even without fancy graphics and great music.
I'm serious, it's in the game's instruction manual.

The story is told in the game's instruction booklet and features a lot of fourth wall references; it takes place after the events of Donkey Kong Country, where Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong discuss their latest adventure to Cranky Kong. Cranky admits that it was more successful than he thought, but claimed that it was only because of "fancy graphics" and that "Kids'll buy anything nowadays." As Cranky rambles about the games of his time, DK and Diddy try to convince him that Donkey Kong Country was great because it "was just plain fun."
Cranky remains unconvinced, and he challenges Donkey and Diddy to an adventure on an 8-bit monochrome system (the Game Boy). After they make the bet, Cranky arranges for King K. Rool to steal the banana hoard overnight. While Diddy originally agreed to the bet, Donkey Kong was furious because he wanted to watch the Banana Bowl. However, he reluctantly decided to go on an adventure with Diddy to retrieve the bananas from K. Rool.

As impressive as the graphics are I can't help but wonder how much of it you would've been able to see on an actual GB screen haha. There's so much going on visually compared to the GB games I played like Tetris, Pokemon or even Super Mario Land!
It’s funny, I got a gameboy for Xmas one year with this game, my dad took it back to the shop because he thought it was faulty due to the graphics being bad! Haha

@@Vinster1137 yes you can but you have to collect all dk letters and then finish the level before to be able to save your progress.
Man i was impressed that they achieve this on the gameboy, they even put variety like in the original series of SNES and the game has above average length in comparison to other games. Though it still has his flaws like the camera that makes getting the 100% way tedious than it should be, you also had to get all letters in a level to save, it was not a problem at all, atleast for me. The soundtrack is amazing for the capabilities of the gameboy, that's for sure. The game is very enjoyable in its beginnings but in advanced levels it becomes tedious due to the camera and the somewhat slippery controls. But still, I had fun playing this game.
But this series is different
@@link5605 The fact that they are considered as such does not remove the fact that they are basically ports of their SNES counterparts, the gameplay as much as the characters do not change between games, is the same. anyways, It was just a basic comparison between hardware capacities, thats why i said "like in the original series"

@@Diblu64 I've never considered these games ports as all the levels are different. I like the quote above me that's exactly how I feel.
I used to be so good at this game, and now its hard as hell. No idea how i was able to do it way back when. I was lucky enough to find it at a local used game shop. I popped it into my snes gameboy adapter cartridge a few days ago and tried it. Amazingly it still worked.

The sheer mastery is astounding! The kast part of world 3 was too difficult for me and I gave up after being unable to dodge the various fiends. It was amazing to watch the whole game in one sitting. Thank you.🙂
Audiovisually impressive for a Game Boy title. Manages to go beyond what the NES was capable of in terms of animation and sprite detail.

Between this and sonic blast, I'm going w/ sonic blast (this should've been on gbc).

So many memories.. back in 96 i entered a contest of trying out the new N64 playing Mario 64 at my local toy store. After playing you would fill out your name and tlf number on paper.. after returning home later that day i got the call .. 🥳AND I WON🥳!!! the price was a gameboy pocket with donkey kong country.. mann i was flying high that day😎 GOOD TIMES!

I only had 1 and 2, and 1 felt like a brand new game whereas 2 felt like a clone of DKC2

Loved this game as a kid and still do for all time. The Team who brought us All the Donkey Kong Country games (Exept 3) really saw Greatnes in the cosmos and had the talent to bring it all into the physical wold in video game form. We would never know who thet really are because all there first names are always like,, T. Stamper. Which is great because they knew that it0's not about them, it's about what's being presented. That's the focus. That's why a paint most well done is the one where the artist doesn't sign his name.
I guess this series there names are revealed. Probably had to happen for law purposes because the laws changed later on.

Came here for the music but reminds me: When i had this game as a kid, i could NOT get past a certain level no matter how much i played. I prayed God would help me beat the game, then forgot about it and something like 10 years went by. I misplaced the game, grew up some, completely forgot about it, and made a friend later who offered to let me borrow the game. So i played it again and WON the level i could never beat before and won the whole game then was like, "woah, God answered my prayer!"

Isn't it crazy that we went from having handheld personal gaming devices as kids to having handheld devices that can be connected to almost the whole world and access to massive amounts of knowledge?! I miss being a kid and getting to play video games with my brother though.

Wait...where's the ending, Rare? "CONGRATULATIONS"? Wha...?? Given the 101% (such as it was), 103%, and 105% endings in the DKC games, even the *normal* endings to those games...the ending here (does it even change for 100%?) is "CONGRATULATIONS"? Uh...um...err...okay.

I just remembered that this came in a yellow cart!!! My cousin used to bring it over along with RC Pro Am and Rocket Power for GBC. Probably around 1999/2000. So much fun!!!

This game gave me very strange feelings as a kid- it was hard, I liked the SNES better, and 0:45 the sound of getting that coin really creeped me out and still does. That sound compared with the dark sad sounding music (for gameboy) gave this game a serious and odd feeling. I didnt get far since I sucked at this type of game, and I never knew how I felt about the game. I still dont......obviously a good game objectively. But it still creeps me out

My 2nd playthrough with this made it into one of my fav Donkey Kong games. Can't believe I used to ignore thinking it might not be as much fun as SNES Country series but I was WRONG when I found out its silly story (oh, Cranky Kong 🤣).
I'm a 2000's baby. In the early and mid 2010's, I used to have a Gameboy with this game, Pokemon, and GTA. This takes me back so much, jesus.

Vinsterz The only way to save your progress is if you get all 4 KONG letters in a level, so these are important.

I'm 13 and i got a Gameboy in a garage sale when i was like 5 or so and this was the game that came with it, its so good man i remember every little thing in the game because i played it so much the game was just a 10/10 i still have a random Powerpuff girls game somewhere for gameboy.but i lost my actual console so I'm pretty sad
