    I choose a Southern campaign commanding an Infantry regiment. (7th Georgia) My first battle we where heavily out numbered by the Federals by 5k men yet Johnston the army commander ,divided his command and we were overrun. Something needs to be done about the AI. The only silver lining in that engagement is that Johnston was KIA in the battle and Jackson is now in command.

    The USA captured Richmond in 14 days and the entire CS armies are somewhere in West Virginia... doing nothing since 1 year.

    • @thehistoricalgamer
      @thehistoricalgamer  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think they improved the base game a ton between EA and final release. It’s still a bit janky and not polished like a AAA game would be, but for the scope they have and the fact there’s only one Programer I’m a bit more forgiving. The state of the DLC on release was disappointing to be sure, I hope they improve it. I’m curious to give the patch they rolled out this morning a look.

    I mean, this is about as competent as the Union Army was at first Manassas.. But only so much you can do on a scale where you don't really have a lot of support - random regiments stuck up on teh ford and going up one at a time doesn't leave you a lot of room in things.
    Then again, one could see the AI glitches as a feature as far as playing accurate to the ability of the actual generals and troops at this point in the war..

  • @rbfishcs123
    @rbfishcs123 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    • @thehistoricalgamer
      @thehistoricalgamer  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Everything is written on top of the engine, that doesn't mean every game problem is an engine problem. I did some work on Scourge of War: Waterloo, and while that game had some issues for sure, the bulk of the complaints, had nothing to do with Engine limitations i.e. architecture limitations (32 bit has a 4 Gig RAM limit)... the engine doesn't decide the architecture, for example the updates being worked on for SOW are moving to 64 bit, but without changing the underlying engine.

    • @rbfishcs123

      @@thehistoricalgamer One of the big things about this dlc that got me excited was actually how small you are in the grand scale of things. Maybe a bit of a weird thing compared to what other people might be excited about but I want to seize surprise opportunities the larger movements of armies might make. Player deployment cheapens both of these

    I love how this video checks out: A commander who is bad at math, thus likes to gamble, and prefers to hire a personal assistant rather than a quartermaster tepidly leads his green unit with cold feet into a confusing mess that is First Manassas. Then questions career choices, hangs out with artillery.
    But then the war starting with Ulysses S Grant and Robert E Lee as head officers in each army does hurt the credibility of the whole concept.

      @@thehistoricalgamer I’m playing US, 4th fivision.
      Had about 4 battles in Virginia in 1861, CSA retreated, so did we. We have camped in enemy territory for the winter (18161) and are out of supplies, together with 80% of union armies. It’s 4th division is stuck in “broken” status in enemy territory and does not move. None of 80% of US armies in CSA territory are moving be it campaigning Season or winter.
      It’s 1864 and 4th Division is still stuck in Broken status and out of supplies in Virginia with no enemy around.
      In my second game I have upped the aggressiveness and joined 2nd Division of US. Had battles all of 1861 and then we camped for winter in enemy territory. Same story here - stuck in Broken status and can’t move due to lack of supplies. I have taken command of a regiment in 1st Division near Philadelphia because it was the only active unit and taken part in a battle around Philadelphia with CSA invaders.
      We have defeated them , all they have is a fort W of Philadelphia with 36 men garrison. However our division is just sitting outside of the city , full supplies and fully manned units and we’re not capturing it back.

    Seems game is unplayable as regiment commander since you cant do much and thus get too few prestige to make you out on higher ranks. Especially if you decide to start as an arty battery captain. But the game is more enjoyable on brigade+ command level. Then you can play important role in most of the battles, get prestige and roll to the top of command. US also have divisions at start, so may skip brigade level, get yourself a division and then you even can go with your division whenever you want on strategic map. To do all of this at start just Skip&Randomize until you get proper amount of prestige. The highest I rolled was around 9,5K which make me possible to be a major general. But you may want save some prestige as even a brigade general can command a division or a whole army.
    P.S. Just dont forget to check your traits while rolling and dont get too bad ones.
