I don't understand why a burned area without active fire is "closed" unless the trail is obliterated by erosion? I once hiked a "closed road" due to landslide in Zion National Park with Ranger caveat that if it looked too dangerous I was to return and report the condition. There huge fissures in the road surface and massive strips of subsidence for about a mile and a dicey part where the roadway was completely absent and a 50%-60% grade peppered with loose rocks and mostly loose dusty talus was the going for about 200 yards. I spent about 30 minutes kicking footholds and kept going.
I think it is really great that you get to hike alone at times, but also have a few people to meet up with as well. It is good to know that if some one were to start this hike alone, they would meet a few companions along the way. Beautiful video, thank you!
So awesome- whitewater preserve was the first of three places my americorps team stayed at in 2017 when we did trail building/restoration/maintenance on the PCT!! Love seeing people hiking it!
Take it easy. I know what happens from Instagram, but I'll say it anyway, take it easy and don't burn yourself out/injure yourself. Lots of late snow in the Sierra means that late May is pushing it for hiking the Sierra. I really appreciate and admire your dedication to hiking the PCT not yellow blazing around chunks of open trail.
Darwin, of all of the people who post their trips on You Tube, you by far are the most professional, informative and entertaining.I just started following you and thoroughly enjoying your current thru hike of the PCT. Taking in all of you advise and experiences of your various videos and I'm ever so close to committing to start my quest to the Triple Crown on the PCT. Hike safe and keep the videos coming!!!
Darwin, what a beautiful adventurous life you have with the nature. The amount of envy I have of your life style is paramount. One day, I will escape this society system and go to the woods. Subscribed !
Awesome video Darwin ! I'm totally blown by the quality of the editing, the fluidity and the variety of the sequences, quiet music on the background to support all the incredible scenery that the PCT is offering and that you share with us. It's more captivating week after week ! Thank you so much and keep going ! That's great ! :)
Very nice video and those were certainly some big days. I have been watching your videos for some time and I just notices you have almost 90 thousands subscribers, congratulations, as I know you have put a lot of time and effort into growing your channel, you deserve it. Take care
I'm currently laid up with a compound fracture of my right tibia suffered during a backpacking trip in GSMNP (SAR carryout included) and your videos are the only thing keeping me sane. Can't wait till I'm healed up and can get out again. Good hike and looking forward to the next installment!
@5:57 Thanks for this bit, especially coming back down the mountain (to live another day for hiking.) That one bit, which I watched the night before hiking in Rocky Mountain National on a trail I'd never been on, kept me from ascending a not-safe peak by myself and turned back before something could go wrong. (That being a broken leg/ankle/knee/hip from post-holing in the fast-melting snow.) "If Darwin was smart, you will be too." Suffice to say, thanks for the wisdom and I'll chase that vista and goal for the next time. It's not going anywhere.
Love the views of Lake Hemet in the distance as you started hiking after breakfast at Paradise Cafe. I'll be camping w/ the scouts across the street from there this weekend at Hurkey Creek. Will certainly keep my eye out for hikers along the way. Hike On!!
I love this series. The subtle quality in your editing is fantastic - timing footstep audio with all sorts of visual cuts so that they line up. Just great! Thanks for having us along.
Those shots f you walking "away" From your camera are very telling. Your gait is absolutely deliberate. . .a man on a mission! I really enjoy your videos. Your comment about soaking your feet and legs was a bit funny but showed you are quite human. Looking forward to seeing more.
Often thought going with a team of 4 would be great. Each person would have a talent to offer such as 1 person an EMS, another is a Trail Cook, another is an LMT and the last one perhaps a psychologist or counselor.
I am loving the PCT series! I thru-hiked the PCT last year and watching your videos feels like I am reliving it! Keep up the great content :D Enjoy the hike!
It seems like you are already pulling big miles, even in the heat. Super gorgeous scenery, even in the charred forest, loving the hiker culture and even the Golden Retriever Mayor. Looking very dapper in the matching puffy, Shades, and beanie hat. I hope you talk more about the gear, the positives and then negatives irregardless of sponsorship's.
Thank you so much for posting your hike. I know you're the one putting the miles, but those of us who are following you are right there with you rooting you on.
I seem to recall in a video from way back where you said you packed your gear by stuffing rather than rolling to prevent creasing your tent in the same spot repeatedly and causing stress and wear in the same spot. I notice you are rolling your tent now. Why the change. Enjoying your hike. Preciate cha.
Hey Darwin your doing an awesome job on the trail. So you liked the whitewater preserve this is my backyard. We missed you as we were in Utah. Stay safe out there on your adventures.
Hey Darwin! Thank you so much for capturing theses beautiful shots. It definitely stirs up a motivational feeling to rethink getting back on the trail. I always dream of hiking these trails one day but my life in the military has kept me from doing anything quite as advance and long as your trips. I promise to myself, that when I can plan a trip like this I will. Thanks again for letting me take this trip with you from the TV screen. I've been following your trip on the PCT on the PCT App and its nice to see ground level footage as I look at the map. Keep shouting out those location references and I'll keep following along and watching these great video. Cheers and may you have many magical trail moments ahead.
Wow Darwin. I watch a lot of hiking videos and you have a special talent. I love the way you put everything together with the talkovers and such. Really loving watching your hike so far. Great job. I pray you make it all the way. Oh and tell Snuggles she is a very good writer. I was captivated by her book review on The Last Season. I'm reading it now.
As always, I enjoy following you on your adventures! Awesome video as it gives those of us who haven't done a thru-hike what it's like to be on one. Good luck as you continue on!
OK Darwin, I have to hand it to you. I normally HATE the music people put in here, but you did a fine job sir. Tip of the hat. It didn't distract or take away anything from the experience of watching your vlog. And holy crap man, you are stacking the miles up pretty good! Keep on trekkin' Darwin.
Howdy, you're making great progress. Thank you for sharing the beautiful views. One of the best parts of your vlog is enjoying the views up and down the trial along with your progress narratives. Travel on my friend.
Love to hear your comparisons between the PCT AT and CDT. Observations etc. So glad you got to see and stay at White Water. One of my favorite places in the Coachella Valley area. I do adore it there. And so easy to get to the PCT for day and section hikes too.
Great Vlogs! My husband and have been watching for over a year. I recommend your channel and gear reviews to hikers I train. I will be SOBO section hiking Oregon in August. I was hoping to cross paths with you but at your warp speed , you’ll probably be halfway thru WA when I start. Good luck, stay healthy, and keep having fun! And when you get a chance here is another request for tutorial on editing software, where you get your music and how you get it uploaded while on the trail. The production quality has vastly improved since the very first uploads years ago. Thank you for your content!
Omg I'm from the town right next to idyllwild and hearing you talking about it and being able to go through familiar territory is going to be so satisfying omg
I've had the same umbrella issue! Big wind, and snap. The Montbell sun umbrella does much better in wind, and isn't so rigid. Won't snap and break! If you're looking to replace, its about 2oz lighter too ;)
Yeah, I’ve looked at that one in the past... I guess it’s time to upgrade. I’m getting it all warmed up for you out here😉...When you pushing off? Hike On, Darwin
Greaat job of the video.A really good balance of your talking over the soft music. I wish more people unde4rstood how important it is to get the sound volume of the music lower than the volume of their talking and the natural sounds from the hike.
Hey Darwin, any chance you can share some night time shots on your hike? If you happen to be up late at night ofcourse. Really interested in seeing how the starry skies look on the trail!
I am asking him to point his camera up for about 20 seconds after dark if he still happens to be awake. Night time shots of starry skies can be super beautiful. It's one of the best things about hiking for me. But then again, I have kind of an astronomy fetish haha ^_^
@@ZyneXx I agree.... it's the high point of camping/hiking for me.... the night shots and views! To me that is the high point of being in the wilderness!
G’day, Darwin. Greetings from Australia! I’m new to your channel having only just discovered the crazy concept of thru-hiking. (Up until now, I thought a 10 day hike was epic!!!) I must tell you that the difference in your persona lately from your earlier videos is huge. Your earlier post-trail depression was evident in your eyes, and it is truly wonderful to see how much happier you are now with the life decisions you have made. I applaud your courage and am so pleased for you. In one of your previous videos, you talk of caring for your feet and trying to dry them out each night. (I think you have stopped taking a light pair of camp shoes to change into at night.) Admittedly my idea of a long hike is considerably different from yours, but I still like to minimise load weight, so I use the EVA (a very lightweight polymer) Birkenstocks when I finish my day’s hiking and want to rest my feet. My US size 10 pair weigh 9.8 oz, are completely waterproof (I actually use them in the ocean during post long run recovery wading to protect myself from stingrays), and, being Birkenstocks, have very good arch support which is important to me with my susceptibility to plantar fasciitis. Also, because they have belt-like buckles, you can easily attach them to the outside of your pack. Perhaps best of all, they’re much cheaper than the normal heavy cork and leather Birkenstocks. I don’t know if this is useful to you, but just wanted to let you know. Perhaps during her next Trail Angel role, Snuggles could arrange to get you a pair...!!!Anyway, keep on charging through those miles. All of you thru-hikers are amazing! Stay happy!!
love your videos I would love to oneday be able to do some hikes like this the AT or PCT. I haven't even had time to get out at all this year. I have however been able to do plenty of day hikes and I also purchased a fifth wheel so I can at least go new places and do different day hikes. my dream one day is to live in a truck camper and backpack all the time. my current girlfriend isn't into the minimalist lifestyle or roughing it (hens the fifth wheel and day hikes) but I love her so compromises are made so I can't complain I do what I can, but thank you for your videos just watching them at my desk at work helps pass the time when nothing is going on and lets me live vicariously through you lol
Keep crushing it man!! Those are some big mileage days. Smart getting off that peak with weather coming in, can't make it to Canada if you get blown off a mountain!!!
Great vid - bummer that mother nature denied you San Jacinto. And yes, the Whitewater Preserve is so nice. One of my fave places to hike around and camp at. Its where I test most of my gear out for next year thru hike!
Great video! I wish you would show a bit more of the logistics of your hike. How you cook, how you manage your water, how you manage your resupply. That sorta stuff. I think that would add some education to an otherwise beautiful series of videos. Thanks.
Great video! It looks like you're walking a bit "carefully" like you're maybe sore. Not surprising since you seem to be starting off like a monster rather than easing into it!

I want to do the PCT but having grown up in palm spring and Joshua tree and all that i'm reconsidering my walk. Maybe picking the tail up in Nevada or something.
Awesome video Darwin! Thanks for sharing. BTW a friend of mine here in Tallahassee FL just started his trek last weekend on the ACT. Not sure if it's a Thru Hike or not, but wish you both safe travels.
Hey Darwin, I have the Enlightened Equipment Torrid jacket due to your review. I had my MHW Ghost Whisperer on the pct over two days of rain in late sept, early oct. in the Goat Rocks. It was that trip I knew I wanted a synthetic jacket. Last weekend camping east of Waldo Lake I would rotate between the two jackets. I have felt the Torrid is warmer. Those were again my observations last weekend. What do you think between the two? Happy trails.
Think I'm going to enjoy this series of vids. Nice one 👍 Excuse my ignorance, but if the burn was four years prior, why can't you access the trail? Is it due to ecological issues, i.e. Allow regrowth?
SO sad that the trees and everything you enjoyed along your reroute section up to (starting around 4:00), and beyond the fire lookout at the top of Tahquitz in Idyllwild is now gone. Gone. Idiot arsonist has taken what I've been enjoying for 50 some odd years. Heading up there this weekend for another pre-Sierra preparation trip. Glad you got through when you did.
his mileage is insane
3:00 Thought you were gonna say, "Foxtrot is off to find his cousin who is also a dog." LOL
Burned areas are just the beginnings of re-growth and rejuvenation. It's a nice analogy for life...
Have you seen Disney's Fantasia 2000? The last chapter is The Firebird Suite. All about the rebirth after a fire.
I haven't seen it.
Forest fires are a natural part of the ecosystems, the cycle of life and death.
I don't understand why a burned area without active fire is "closed" unless the trail is obliterated by erosion? I once hiked a "closed road" due to landslide in Zion National Park with Ranger caveat that if it looked too dangerous I was to return and report the condition. I spent about 30 minutes kicking footholds and kept going.
I was about to say the same thing.
That is the CUTEST mayor I have ever seen in my life...💙💜
I think it is really great that you get to hike alone at times, but also have a few people to meet up with as well. It is good to know that if some one were to start this hike alone, they would meet a few companions along the way. Beautiful video, thank you!

Just finished PCT ep.2. My very own 14 min. vacation. Thank you Darwin!

Thanks Darwin, great video and I like the trail philosophy; hike'em all. Take care and great job.

Good to see the videos from the trail!!! Hike on be safe out there!!!
Really cool to follow this walk ... good luck with the rest of the trip
