Georgian Dancers Push Their Physical Limits for Tradition

  • When dancer David Chanishvili is on stage, he believes that he can fly. Indeed, he appears to glide through the air with ease while performing for the traditional Sukhishvili Georgian National Ballet in Tbilisi, Georgia. But don’t let his strength and grace fool you: to become a part of this dance troop requires rigorous training, athleticism and skill. Its blend of folk dance, classical ballet and modern dance originated over 70 years ago with the grandparents of current director Nino Sukhishvili. Now, the 100+ member ensemble travels the world bringing Georgian dance front and center stage.

      lucas big oh, stop talking shit! "many georgians dont like sukhisvili"? are you out of your mind, or what? The majority admires Sukishvilebi because of their commitment to quality and originality. Only those obscurants, who are stuck in the past dislike them and their opinion as you may or may not know doesn't really matter.

    • @lalie9019
      @lalie9019 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Did I mention somewhere that keeping traditions means sticking in the past? Or, what makes you think that 'Sukishvilebi' aren’t keeping traditions? they're keeping the old and creating the new ones at the same time, which is absolutely normal - what's abnormal is an ultraconservative mob's uproar over innovations, that are considered as hazardous for the old traditions in their eyes.

      Tbh georgian dance is nothing like ballet (i say it out of experience. I did georgian dance for 8 years)
      Ballet focuses more on flexibility (whcih i never had and had to give up on dreaming about it because of that) while geoegian dance focuses more on motionfluid
      Ballet is performed mostly on toes (if im wrong pls correct me thanks) while georgian dance *does* involve it but does not focus on it as much as ballet so calling georgian dance "ballet" seems very wrong with me tbh

      @Wee Chatt I get that you're not a fan, and that's fine. However, the way you say it makes it sound arrogant and doesn't really make a reasonable point to me. The Kpop industry is competitive and difficult, and most musical artists work hard to achieve their place. Don't belittle their hard work. American Hip Hop & other genres has their own standing, and inspires some artists from the Kpop industry, but that doesn't make them any less original. It's bringing cultures together and helps spread the love for hip hop and other genres all over the world. Ever tried to think of it this way instead of just labeling a whole genre of music 'crap'? That 'crap' has helped the mentally ill, given hope and inspiration and you call this 'crap'? At least these kind of music don't constantly sing about sex and breakup, f*cks and sh*t. :) it's alright, not everybody has good taste and appreciation for some good music.

  • @turkosmopolit633
    @turkosmopolit633 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    The Caucasian dances are very similar. Like for example the Lezinga dance. I am turkish with a Lazian (Georgian Mingreli) background and we have the Horon. It is noticeable that all these dances are danced very energetic and fast. A commonality that unites the Caucasian dances. I love it !

    • @Dinosaur315
      @Dinosaur315 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Horon isnt originally caucasian though because it only reaches Adjara and Guria in Georgia. It is said to be balcanic originally but thanks to the greek settlers it spread beyond. Now obviously it does have caucasian influences but still.

    I have been lucky to see the Sukhishvili group perform a couple of times in the past... a phenomenal performance each time! 👍 Having been a dancer myself, I can tell how much dedication and hard work goes into perfecting such movements and routines. 😅
    And it’s fascinating to see the similarities in the movements of dances across Asia and Europe (right from Japan, China, Russia to Thailand, India, Indonesia to Turkey, Georgia, Greece, Bulgaria to Ireland, Spain etc) To a layman, it may not seem so but a little study and research will show how much the gestures and movements overlap between various cultures which I find absolutely fascinating ....Dance and music are such universal “languages”! So glad to see these amazing artistes bringing joy to the world! Bravo! ♥️

    I had watched this video in August of 2019, and yesterday I saw them for the first time live - thanks to this video I got to know one of the most interesting cultures I've ever encountered and I'm so grateful for that. If you think that their movements are impressive, try watching them live accompanied by a musical performance, outstanding experience!
