    Hey guys! In this DCS World Simulator video I'm in the FA18 Hornet fighting against the F14 Tomcat flown by Pix6 (Thanks so much for the help)
    This one is all about the notch, The best way to defeat the Phoenix Missile IMO.
    Hope you guys enjoy!

    You were flying my old squadron, VFA-131. I love to see it! The F/A-18C in game is listed as BUNO number 165407, which was from my squadron. It was aircraft 406. Great notch technique, and very well executed.

    • @KevinJCoburn
      @KevinJCoburn ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@speed150mph I wouldn't know about the flying part. I was an electrician. But as far as my experience goes, the sounds it makes when the engines are starting, when the APU starts and shuts down, when the canopy closes, etc, are all right on.
      There is a lot of stuff that doesn't match with the real jet. For example, there is no way to check the fuel before you start it, or put on external power. We used to check it with battery power all the time, and you have to when refueling it. Battery switch to on, engine crank switch to right. That will bring up the fuel on the IFEI on the real jet. Also, for some reason they show BLIN codes on the FCS page when there is nothing wrong with the FCS. A bunch of stuff like that, which most people will not notice.

    • @speed150mph
      @speed150mph ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KevinJCoburn Well if we’re being fair, you know the inner workings of the jet better than a pilot anyway. A flight sim can fake its way through how the jet flies, it’s harder to fake (but also harder to implement) the systems that work in the heart of the jet.

    Once they get into DCS, I'd like to see an AIM-260 armed F/A-18E vs. an AIM-54 armed F-14. Also an R-77M vs. AIM-54. I don't understand why we can't build a "linked" dual frequency seeker in an air to air missile. Something like a pulse doppler and millimeter wave radar. The MMW would see the notch and movement of the target aircraft.

    • @amizaur3marcinostrowski186
      @amizaur3marcinostrowski186 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A today's technology AESA seeker would be probably precise and smart enough, to make any "notching" attempts almost useless. Considering dual seeker option, I'd rather combine AESA radar with secondary IIR seeker to make "quiet" intercepts possible without the target ever knowing, for backup mode in heavy electronic countermeasures and against stealth targets. On the other hand, a good LPI AESA seeker combined with advanced datalink may achieve this just as well (leave target unaware untill too late to react or even untill impact). And if MAWs + laser DIRCM devices become popular on potential target platforms then IIR channel may become useless anyway, so my bet is that the AIM-260 is equipped with just an advanced AESA radar seeker.

    • @speed150mph
      @speed150mph ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amizaur3marcinostrowski186 what I wonder is why can’t you have a home-on-radar seeker, like a harm for the air to air fight. Have it so the missile homes on the radar and doesn’t turn on its own radar until either terminal homing or in case the enemy turns off its radar.

    This is exactly the technique I wanted to test when I finally find time to get into playing DCS ;-). I'm glad someone demonstrated that it works. Not something to depend on as the main BVR tactic, but I was quite confident that in certain scenarios against certain adversaries it might be useful. Regards from Poland by an ex sim player :-).
    P.S. In my life I've played a lot of combat flying simulators (land, sea and subsea sims too) but it was mainly in 90's and 2000's :-) when I was younger and had more free time... I guess you would probably not even know some of the titles of then-great sim games from 90s - like "Birds of Prey", "Flight of the Intruder", "Gunship 2000" or a wonderfull "F/A-18 Interceptor" from Amiga and even a "Tomahawk" from 8-bit Atari :-). Well, the Tomahawk was not great at all ;-) but the choice was limited on Atari ;-). "Silent Service" - WW2 submarine sim was MUCH better one! My last flying sim IIRC was the Janes F-15E. It was around the time of cpt. Jeff Hwang double shot-down of Mig-29's over Bośnia. I remember I tried to recreate it as closely as possible in Janes F-15E, including Mig maneuvers, to see if the distances and timings from the description and radio recording would be similar in game :-). Can't remember the result though. Oh, and I played some Falcon 4.0 little later, too. A great sim!
    I've bought DCS F-16C lately, and... it waits, someday I'll give it a try... :-). And possibly I'll try Rasbam F-15E too, as I'm well used to it's radar and weapon system from playing Janes F-15E so it should be relatively easy to learn for me. We'll see if I still have the patience to learn a new sim :-)

  • @erico5865
    @erico5865 ปีที่แล้ว

    In segment 1, your notching technique/execution is wrong. All notching maneuvers should be executed with a high G turn to the notch, dispensing chaff, then inverting and bullseye it down at least 7-10K of altitude. This not only defeats the missile in flight, it breaks the host's radar lock, and the notching altitude change results in exiting the adversary's radar search volume. Your "taking your time" to get there results in two things: 1. The host radar can likely track you the entire way. 2. You are permitting missile fly out time that creates lateral distance between the bandit and the missile so that you cannot be sure your are notching the missile by notching the aircraft. Incidentally, the range at which you were from the bandit, a simple 30 degree heading change would have defeated the missile. So it is a tactical error to notch at that range. If your RWR gear is screaming at you, guess what? You're not in the notch. What does "pitch in defensive" mean. Never heard that before. You're not getting a radar lock is because you're trying the scan the entire southern hemisphere. If you have directional SA to the bandit, collapse your azimuth scan down to a smaller volume to increase power density around the target. If you notch with a reduced azimuth scan, slew it to the side of the threat, so that when you turn back in it is lead scanning in the turn. If you see the F3 has a track and he shows he's defending, pull him to pure and light the AB and eat up the range. Range is his friend not yours in this engagement. You got lucky many times in this fight.

    You constantly need to change your radar settings in the hornet for BVR, you were scanning way too wide :) Best setting for ranges >20m is 4B, 40°, 40m high and withing 20m 4B 20m 40° med. Also TWS manually > RWS and then lock with undesignate/designate and switch to auto, not with the TDC cursor. If you do that, you won`t have to notch 3 short range missiles in a row cause you can give him some as well ;)

      Not with 54A. If f14 was locking f18 with PDSTT then 54A it semi active guided all the way. Missile will not go active, and its trashed if f14 loses lock. PDSTT turns 54A into giant Sparrow.
