This song was written about his mother that passed away and it was his way of trying to cope with the loss. It wasn't written about a foolish woman but about her journey after her life here ended and that one day they may see each other again. Once they do meet again she will tell him stories of her grand adventure. Anyway, this is a great song and in my personal opinion it is a nice way to cope with the loss of a parent.
+Ashlee Roberts Personally I've always interpreted it as a guy who was in love with a girl who seemed different from all the rest, always exploring, trying new things, being outgoing, while also having a heart of gold. The girl left to go find herself on a spiritual journey (traveling through space) before the relationship could become real. Now that she's "back in the atmosphere," the guy immediately came back to her, asking her of her travels, sharing her elation, etc, hoping to rekindle something. Essentially a love song about the perfect girl and a guy who's too afraid to chase after her but admires her deeply. But that gives entirely new insight on the song, I appreciate it. I'm sure his mom must be proud knowing that she has one of the most beautiful songs in the world for all to remember her by.
Wow,I never knew that...someone brought up my Grandmother a few days ago and they didn't even know it...it was 6 years ago but this song might be able to help me cope with the loss of my grandmother....I miss you so much grandma...😭
+Ashlee Roberts i dont know how u know that about the song it does make more sense than what i heard I heard it was when his mom went to rehab but that seems stupid now. :)
I miss Joey. My brother just passed, he was disabled and couldn't walk or talk. I like to think he's traveling through the galaxy doing all the things he couldn't while he was here on Earth. I love you big bro, life isn't the same. Peace be with you.
This song is the musical equivalent of feeling the wind blow through your hair. One of the most beautiful things I have ever felt. This song is an experience.
This song reminds me of my first wife, Amanda. She seemed to always be looking for something I just couldn't give her. I still miss you, Mandy. I'm looking forward to finding you in the next life.
It's oddly incredible that I just recently found out that this song is wrote for his mother who passed. When younger, without unknowingly understanding the interpretation of this song, (mind you, I was only 9). I've always cried when listening to this song because the song gave me this feeling of my mother being in long distance away from me. And I've always questioned myself for asking why this song made me feel this unexpected affection from a motherly fondess. I expected this song was a typical love song. I didn't know anything about lyric interpretations at that age. I was embarrassed to cry. Years passed, and surprising..I find out that this song is about his mother who died! This song will never get old. It's Beautiful. It will always be one of my all-time favorite classic.
I remember when I was about three or four years old, we would always go to the town pool. Almost every time we went this song would play. I'm now a freshman in high school, live in a different town, and listen to the same old stuff. Funny how some things never change...
how in the world are you only a freshman? the song came out in 2001, if you were 4 years old, that means you were born in '97 (same as me) and would mean you're at least 17 or 18 years old.
Sorry for the loss of your NaNa 💔 may she rest peacefully.. my grandma died in December of 2015. 😥 and they say it gets easier with time and im here to tell you that it does. All you can do now is move forward in hopes that she is looking down on you. Always strive & prosper. 😩😩
This is one of the most emotionally complicated songs I've ever heard. From what I gather, he's happy for her going out to bigger and better things, acknowledges that he's too afraid to do the same, has missed her, and hopes that the things she's experienced haven't been too much to make her forget him and where she comes from. Try conveying all of that with those lyrics XD
its a song about how his mother who had lung cancer. He was not able say goodbye to her because at the time the band was on tour and when she did die it blindsided him. That night he was pondering the idea that no one actually leaves when they die. They just change and stay somewhere in the "atmosphere". As he slept on the idea it turned into a dream and lyrics supposedly just came to him without any thought. He woke up and wrote down what he had seen in his dream and with those lyrics he wrote an award winning song. Thats why I love this song so much. There is a great sentimental and spiritual aspect to the song that blows me away every time I hear it.
Her mother said no to the marriage because I'm American.... She went back to China.... This song hits home for me... Sitting here with a wedding ring alone in the apartment we once shared. She talked for a while, but now she's gone quiet... I still sit in this apartment wondering how her life is playing out... I hope she's happy.
Damn bro. That sounds fucked up. Get yourself a latina and tell her youll get her papers. N then like never give her papers for she can stick wit u forever
She was too good for you and her mother knew it. Best thing to do is go to the ghetto and marry a drug whore 1: they're experienced 2: they make their own money 3: their parents don't care 4: you're basically guaranteed custody of the kids if you divorce So as you can clearly see, you've been setting standards too high for yourself, which has been causing all of your disappointment and depression. Best of luck to you.
This makes me nostalgic for the warm summer nights we would spend driving around in the car. I never knew where we were going , or maybe just can't remember where we went. But I remember sticking my head out the window and trying to imagine how big space is & wondering what drops of Jupiter might look like. I know this isn't what this song is about , but this song always brings back fond memories.
When I hear this song, I think about finally having the chance to explore and find myself, and taking advantage of it...Going to unknown places, trying new things, and meeting new people...but never forgetting where you came from.
For people wondering what the song means, though I've heard it's dedicated to the lead singer's mom, it's about a woman that wants space. The girl wants to go explore her options in life, maybe hook up with a guy for a fling (shooting star) and discover new places. The lead singer is essentially asking her if it was everything it was cracked up to be, and whether or not she missed him while she was finding herself. The lines about the lights being faded and heaven being overrated are perfect examples. Because sometimes when you're with a person, you see someone hotter or you hear about all the options you can explore. Funny thing about life is that all that glitters is not gold, and the grass isn't always greener on the other side. My ex is learning this right now.
Sarah Mason It's about his dead mother. He stated that in the interview about it. The lyrics came to him in a dream, and then later on, it became a mixture of that original thought along with chasing after a girl
My nanny used to play this song and she loved it...but she died of leukemia and this was played at her funeral...I will always love this song because it reminds me of her...
I remember listening to this back in 2008 as my dog was been put down and I couldn't remember the name I have been searching for it since 2010. I dedicate this to you Ice
everyone has to wright dirty minded comments ! .. Lead singer Pat Monahan has stated that the song was inspired by the death of his mother, and that the opening lines came to him in a dream. The song, which started as a song about his mother, has evolved into a love song, according to Monahan in 2006. Poetically, the use of references to planets, stars, galaxies and so on gives an ethereal feel to the music, contributing to its popularity. The lyrics propose a lost lover who has 'found a shooting star', explored the Universe, but comes home.
My friend Lily, the sweetest girl I've ever met died last night of an accidental overdose, she loved this song. I always thought it was corny but now that my best friend Mark who was killed on Thanksgiving morning of last year, my friend Greg Giraldo a genius comedian with a lot of self hatred died years ago, Steve my mentor, who died from liver cancer the same year Greg died, and everyone else I've loved and lost, I get why Lily loved this song, and I know I'll see her again one day, until I do, I'm going to think of her somewhere out there in the universe, free of pain and wish her well on her journey.
Staci Wiley, even though it was 10 months ago I feel your pain! My mother’s boyfriend of 15 years committed suicide in their room, I’m not sure if she’ll ever get over it? ✌🏻and ❤️
+Polo Golf Sorry but someone had to say it. Your italian is really that bad. Also, the spelling is incorrect. Next time you want to impress someone with your language skills, try and check before you post.
This song makes me think of my mom who's a drug addict and abandoned me when I was young.. Except she never did come back. Hope she found what she was looking for in life
Proud to hit that like button. I remember this coming out before we had TH-cam back when you actually had to buy the album or wait for it to come on the radio. Then you were telling everyone in the car to shut up and listen. I'm only 27 but I remember that. GOD I miss the old memories
Maybe it's just me, but I always get a tear in my eye every time I hear this. Maybe it's the song itself, maybe it's the context of its origins (a tribute to the lead singer's mother, incidentally), or maybe I'm just a sentimental old fool, but this is hands down one of my personal favorite songs of all time.
Wow... my mom passed a year ago today.. evwrytime i heard this song i would think of her and i just cry... i didnt know until just reading the comments right now that this song was written about his mother.... i had no clue...... i always thoight it was about his lover who left n came back from soul searching... i always thought i was silly for evwr making a connection between this song and my mother... now i understand it now. Incredible
I understand he wrote this after his mother died. A tribute to her so to speak. The lyrics don't always represent my mom. But to think of her spirit floating through the milky way and seeing heaven is overrated makes me feel a better. Losing your mom is tragic. Much more hurt than I imagined. Well done.
Drops of Jupiter Train Now that she's back in the atmosphere With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey She acts like summer and walks like rain Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey Since the return of her stay on the moon She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey Hey, hey But tell me did you sail across the sun Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded And that heaven is overrated? Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star One without a permanent scar And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there? Now that she's back from that soul vacation Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey, yeah Now that she's back in the atmosphere I'm afraid that she might think of me as Plain ol' Jane, told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day And head back to the milky way And tell me, did Venus blow your mind Was it everything you wanted to find And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken Your best friend always sticking up for you Even when I know you're wrong Can you imagine no first dance, freeze-dried romance Five-hour phone conversation The best soy latte that you ever had, and me But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day And head back toward the Milky Way? And tell me did you sail across the sun Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded And that heaven is overrated? And tell me, did you fall from a shooting star One without a permanent scar And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself Na-na, na-na, na-na Na-na, na-na, na-na And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day? And did you fall from a shooting star, fall from a shooting star? And are you lonely looking for yourself out there?
Love this song so much I can never stop laughing at one line though "Can you imagine no love pride, DEEP FRIED CHICKEN?" Lol 😂😂 My fave line of the whole song.
If you pretend that this song is actually about a couple that has to separate because the girl followed her dream of becoming an astronaut and finally going to space, it becomes way cooler.
Dedicating this song to my little puppy that I lost last winter to a horrible sickness. I can just see him taking a wild trip to the constellation and not suffering anymore. RIP scuzzy.
The song seems as though it's sarcastic. Like this woman left him to go find herself and he is basically saying like, "Did you have a great time doing that? Did you get all you wanted out of life? Because you left me for this reason and did you realize that you missed me as you were trying to find yourself?" That is my opinion on the point of the song. Very beautiful and I love it!
Ereeny Gerges Really? To me it kinda reminded me of how my mom and dad met in California, had one date, and then mom went back to school in Arizona. She came right back on spring break, and the rest was history.I could imagine my dad singing this to my mom upon her return.
My great grandmother died December 5th, 2018 at 81. Can’t believe I was blessed enough to know her. Her funeral was just today, and this song just encompasses how I feel as a whole. I remember that my Aunt played this song while we were having a mini road trip about a week or so ago before everything and I liked it a lot, so I listened to it a bit more. I never knew how much I’d relate to the feeling that this song brings until now. Here’s the sob story if you want to skip and go to the next comment: She used to pick me up from the bus stop everyday when I was in elementary school. Everyday. And, I swear, she would do anything for me. She loved me and my sister so dearly, and she always was close to my heart. Even through her hip surgery and after, she still cared for us. Then, one day, she had a stroke and fell down her basement stairs. She kept being transferred from the hospital to a nursing home. She was never able to speak too well after that, so I was never able to hear her voice, something I greatly miss, since. Then the nursing home she was at became too expensive for my great grandfather, so she was transferred again to a different nursing home. The difference between nursing homes was that at one she was getting better because of physical therapy, but the one she last resided at didn’t, making her condition worsen. She was in there for 3 years. I miss her so much. I wish I would have been with her more often than I was, just as she was for me. She used to make art that’s so very beautiful. She made me and my sister’s first birthday cards. I still have mine framed in my room. I’m not a very religious person, but I still have hope in my heart that just maybe I’ll see her again one day.
Ty Liz. I had not heard this piece in a very long time. My baby sister and I used to sing this song in a corridor on Main Street that had awesome acoustics.... we were rock gods of only for a few minutes
Emily Spears my dad played this in the car a few days ago after I haven’t heard it for a long time and I knew every word to it. He used to sing it to me. Now we just listen in the car
This song gave Neil DeGrasse Tyson a headache for being astronomically incorrect. If you’ve been exploring Venus, Jupiter and the constellations 🌌, you never left the Milky Way in the first place. SMH. LoL
I'd be honored if some late 90s fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows and I'LL BE (The Greatest Fan of Your Life) by Edwin McCain on my channel. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace out.
Listening to this in 2018! I LOVE this song because of all the outerspace references. I love astronomy. I heard it a long time ago and for some reason one day I remembered something to trigger the memory but I could only remember fragments of it although I tried consistently to find it. I'm extremely ecstatic to have a download copy from Apple ITunes. Another song I like from Train was, Hey Soul Sister.

isn`t he trying to say that his girl is like an angel?? that falled from the sky?? :/
Damn I just thought it was about Jupiter and deep fried chicken
Excellent interpretation!

This song is just so bittersweet; it always puts a smile on my face as tears roll down my face because the lyrics mean so much to me.

Brandon Lopez Because it makes me emotional and in pain :\
Aww im sorry :( .. know i'm here for you.. even though i'm a stranger..
StealthyGamer Kind words, thank you :)
I understand he wrote this after his mother died. A tribute to her so to speak. The lyrics don't always represent my mom. But to think of her spirit floating through the milky way and seeing heaven is overrated makes me feel a better. Losing your mom is tragic. Much more hurt than I imagined. Well done.
This is why I keep coming back to TH-cam (and cry to myself at night) XD
Nice N profile pic, m80!
Drops of Jupiter
Train
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return of her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey
Hey, hey
But tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?
Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?
Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey, yeah
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as
Plain ol' Jane, told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land
But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the milky way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there
Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you
Even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze-dried romance
Five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me
But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?
And tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?
And tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself
Na-na, na-na, na-na
Na-na, na-na, na-na
And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day?
And did you fall from a shooting star, fall from a shooting star?
And are you lonely looking for yourself out there?
2017 and still listening ❤️

This was always one of my Dad's favorite song. Miss and love you forever. RIP April 20 1952 to April 3 2002
happy 60th birthday in heaven uncle jack i hope your up there somewhere in the stars 😢
Have fun...
Love this song so much
I can never stop laughing at one line though
"Can you imagine no love pride, DEEP FRIED CHICKEN?" Lol 😂😂
My fave line of the whole song.
Jade Sirmon that deep fried chicken is prolly something which his mother really loved so he measured it wih same value as to love and pride
Its actually about his mom who died. I felt the same way too the first time hearing it.
that's what is great about this song,he doesn't have a clue, makes you want to pray for him
I clicked this to hear a new then i was like
oh wait I know this song

My great grandmother died December 5th, 2018 at 81. Can’t believe I was blessed enough to know her. Her funeral was just today, and this song just encompasses how I feel as a whole. I remember that my Aunt played this song while we were having a mini road trip about a week or so ago before everything and I liked it a lot, so I listened to it a bit more. I never knew how much I’d relate to the feeling that this song brings until now.
Here’s the sob story if you want to skip and go to the next comment:
She used to pick me up from the bus stop everyday when I was in elementary school.
She just wanted space. About as much space as you can fit between the moon and earth....
Joe Wiltshire You describing your mom's specifications for a flat?
That's not that much space 3 days worth?
2019 and i’m still here
I needed that.
+Sophia R. did you found yourself?
Sophia R i needed you
Ty Liz. I had not heard this piece in a very long time. My baby sister and I used to sing this song in a corridor on Main Street that had awesome acoustics.... we were rock gods of only for a few minutes
Poetic song in a beautiful way...across the constellations and back to us

Trap Music Now. 2018
This song gave Neil DeGrasse Tyson a headache for being astronomically incorrect.
If you’ve been exploring Venus, Jupiter and the constellations 🌌, you never left the Milky Way in the first place. SMH. LoL
Nostalgia.

My grandfather died yesterday 6 years ago. And he taught my mom this song on harmonica so
this is like, his song. I miss you Papi!
To my first wife Deanna Cliff. At 36 she decided after 22 years together that she needed to go find herself. I hope you found you out there.......
Wow
I hope she did too... That's a big sacrifice she made in the name of self discovery
ahhh i love the older music

Beautiful !
