Korea has been gripped by a hot spell recently. But simply changing the color of the roof of your home can help you save on energy costs and beat the heat. Take a look.

Green rooftops, which are easy to spot in Korea, are turning white one by one. They are so-called "cool roofs," which help chase away the heat by reflecting the solar heat. Rooftops painted in green absorb most of the sunlight and heat, whereas those painted in white reflect over 85 percent. The temperature difference becomes obvious when seen through an infrared thermal camera. White rooftops lower the indoor temperature by two degrees on average, which helps reduce the use of air conditioning and other cooling devices.
[Soundbite] Cho Yun-seok(Staff at Cool Roof Installation Firm) : "When the air conditioning temperature is set one degree lower, electricity costs go down by seven percent. This can help prevent the urban heat island phenomenon."
The effect of white roofs is even more pronounced in rooftop rooms and on top floors, which have poor insulation. Yoo Nam-kyu, who lives on a rooftop, says he has properly benefited from the cool roof.
[Soundbite] Yoo Nam-kyu(Seoul Resident) : "My room used to be very hot in the morning and I had to ventilate it. But now it's cooler. I think I'm going to put off getting an air conditioner."
The popularity of "cool roofs" painted white has spread to more than 40 cities around the world including New York.
