      No I do not have a step through bike but I should. I think that is one of the biggest advantages of having one leg. It's way easier without my fake leg to get my leg over the seat especially if there's stuff on my back rack. I remember a long time ago I had a 3-speed men's bike. They are notorious for slipping going up hills. It may have been way less painful on your gonads if you had a girls bike LOL. I wonder if there were electric bikes before there were motorized bikes? There are some conflicting stories. I was reading the first electric bike was in 1897. And it had a Bosch motor. But the battery wore out really fast. And that is why they stopped making them. But you probably know way more than I about the history of bicycles

      Yes, I have a Biktrix Stunner. Similar to the Stunner X, but has a 5 speed Sturmey-Archer internally geared hub (IGH)
      Love the step thru and the IGH.
      You stop and realize you need to down shift to gear 1. No problem just shift to gear 1.

    Great explanation. I am a disabled senior so the only regular bike I have is a step through. For the reasons you stated I cannot sling my leg over the seat and if I tried I would fall down. Believe me I know this for a fact. They are all bicycles, ride what fits you.

  • @johnrpizzaguy
    @johnrpizzaguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Completely agree in my 60 years, in the last few years I have torn my hamstring, had a hip replacement and broken my hip. I was tired of getting old and settling into my couch after work , thanks to my step through E-bike I have put over 1550 miles on since October of 2020, not only losing weight but getting out enjoying life again here in San Luis Obispo. I did forget to mention that I’m a 37 year master mechanic and if somebody wants to say I’m riding a girls bike that’s okay but I never hear it from another bike rider we’re to busy having fun riding around. Thanks for the great video.

    I got one and I'm a short young guy. Like u said it's easier when ur handling a bunch of stuff on the back. When I'm out hunting I might have a tree stand on the back. It's easier to maneuver in big heavy winter hunting clothes too. Not to many ppl I Kno can maneuver around real well with hunting bibs on designed for a Michigan winter.

    Just like to say I've never thought of a step through as a ladies bike, its just another frame design, like you said shorter people have different needs for example my wife is 5ft 1inch tall and only able to lift a leg a short way, Her bike is a fat tyre step through,
    but before buying it I had to check the frame lowest point was no higher than 14 inches other wise she couldn't get on it. And of course at 70 yrs old

    I went with a step thru ebike mostly for the lower center of gravity. At 6'4" it makes a huge difference having the battery and frame in a lower position.
    My 700c road bike was incredibly top heavy with me on it. It's just a dust collector now.

    Your videos are awesome, very informative. I personally have a Rad Mission 1 bike (Love it) and at 6"4' tall have no issues and I'm 65 yrs old. But I must wonder, will I be able to easily lift my leg over the bike rack and seat when I'm 70+ as I often pick up a bag of groceries every day at the market. We are looking to get an Ebike for my wife soon and I think a step thru will be in order, but not because she's a woman.....she's 12 years younger than me and we may have to trade bikes when I go to the market....LOL... in any case, I truly enjoy all of your short video clips...most informative young man. Thank you...Mike and Rhonda in Cali

    Love this! As I’m getting back into biking and more specifically commuter biking this video really helped me decide on a step-through. I’ll be carrying cargo and I’m a bit iffy on my right knee. And yeah there is that stigma but then I’m now like so what? It’ll work for me and that’s what counts.

  • @MoPoppins
    @MoPoppins 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yay…can’t go wrong w/ offering a step-thru version of popular bikes! 👏 Even frame flex is mitigated w/ mods to step-thrus, such as in Tern’s offerings, also allowing for carrying about double the mass of most cargo bikes.

    Glad to see the stigma of the girls bike disappearing. For me personally it’s always been a question of frame strength. I caught the mountain bike big in the early 90s and was told by my local shop owner that those type frames weren’t strong enough for hard off-road use. Lots of advances since then. Maybe you could do a comparison?

    I got myself the Biktrix Juggernaut Ultra Duo Step-Thru (what they call version 2 now on the website, with the 2 colour paint job), and have gotten positive comments about it from Harley riders, dudes with the complete typical look of black leather and giant beards. Still close enough to a bicycle that I don't get grouched at on local mixed use paths, but sturdy like a tank.
    The step through design is far more practical, since you can load up a rear rack without needing to be a gymnast. Being a guy with bad knees and back, and spent the last 10 years in an office job, my days of being mistaken as a gymnast are long gone (wishful thinking)... Unless you're doing the extreme stuff like bowling down mountains at break neck speeds, everyone should consider the step through design first.

    My last mistake was a conventional looking 29 inch mountain bike; just slightly too tall for me, and almost always ends in me almost falling over trying to get on it or off it. If I was 20 years younger, might not be as much of a problem. The problem with marriage is that when you buy something that is wrong, like it or not, the wife seems to think I should still use it for the next 20 years.
    Went with a 20 inch step thru e-bike this time. Looks more like a motorcycle than anything. However, at least I can get on and off without some form of last minute gymnastics. At my age, I really just don't give a $h!+ what others think.

    Step-through bikes are good for food delivery as they enable you to get off quickly, especially helpful if you're making multiple deliveries
    The downside for me, and the reason I didn't choose that option for the E-bike I've just bought, was that having the traditional frame means I can store items underneath, such as a frame bag. As I'm planning to go away bikepacking for a few days, I need the extra storage space

  • @waltermorgan828

    ST bikes are however, smaller. For someone 6'4" and older as well it's frustrating to find a bike with good specs only to discover that the geometry of the ST is too small. So far the Surface 604 brand is the only one that I have found that has comparable geometry between styles for taller riders.

    My first ebike was a step through design and coming from a conventional triangular frame was the best thing ever. I have never had anyone audibly call it a girls bike. I had some punk come up to me and deride the fact I was riding a 20" bike. But the advantages in city traffic where vehicles and pedestrians are intermingled at intersections I have found the smaller step through bike so easy to manoeuvre Compared to a 26" (the max size for my height). Let's call the step through what they are - a unisex bike, which BTW makes them genderless inline with much of the times we live and our use of vocabulary. In Oz fishermen are now fishers, firemen = fire fighters; just a couple of examples of how we are removing gender where it is not required or appropriate.

    I will have you know Kyle, that not only do I have a step through bike. I also still ride my step through trike, with skirts and dresses on. And here is another little tied bit of information Kyle, skirts was not originally limited to use by just women. There was a time when skirts, or as they are also known Kilts was also worn by men. And are still worn by men in many countries, just not typically the United States unless you have either Scottish ancestry or are from a culture where skirts are still worn by men such as in many Pacific island cultures. So no the step through bike was not originally designed for use by just women, but for both genders who wore skirts.

    I think that the original men’s bikes were designed by castrated eunuchs who didn’t have to worry about putting both feet on the ground at a stop signs.

    Since when did bikes have a gender. Can anything be more ridiculously silly? Who is so loony as to approach such a nonimportant and irrelevant idea/belief in this day and time? I'm embarrassed as a human being that this could even possibly be an issue.

    Only women deserve to comfortably get on & off bikes so those are girls bikes;)
    I'm 54 now and and can still ride my hard tails but definitely see a lower step through in my future.

    Women have always been able to cross gender boundaries. This alone doesn't justify a neutrality in a product.
    Women could wear breeches, but men couldn't wear dresses. So a bike that's created for something that explicitly excludes men, must be intended for women.
    The fact that in our modern times, men are allowed to wear dresses, doesn't change a dress's i̲n̲t̲e̲n̲d̲e̲d̲ gender.
