Historical Fact: *it was very interesting to find out that House of Representatives, Democratic Representative Samuel Dickstein of New York and the politician who founded the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in the first place, was being paid by the NKVD (WW2 Soviet predecessor of the infamous KGB) for classified information. Ironically, the founder of the very committee wrongly associated with McCarthy was a Soviet agent. Instead, McCarthy was a Senator and Tail Gunner (McCarthy's nickname) was the chairman of the Government Operations Committee and its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the United States Senate*

I'm not a McCarthy fan but don't understand why he didn't press the Hoover letter more. If Hoover claimed it was a fabricated letter should it still be regarded as top secret? I would have read it anyways.

The Venona transcripts proved that McCarthy’s "fears" were legitimate.
No they weren’t. Everyone knew there were at least a few Soviet sympathizers in government but McCarthy claimed they were in high positions and that they were making some actionable effort to undermine the government. Plus he accused hundreds in Hollywood and the media, who are not part of the government

it's basically lying on people "are communists (American Citizens serving as spies for Hitler). It could be true they were communists. It could be lies, but the mere accusation of saying "Lily is a communist" would be enough to kill your career and harm your personal relationships, and if possible make people want to kill you as they would see you as the enemy. If you are aware of the Salem Witch Trials, this is the political version of that. Got it?

That's actually the reverse of that. Labeling someone a "Trumper" because of a disagreement would be McCarthyism. There's no true merit to it. And even if that person voted for him, labeling that person as a Trumper would insist that they are the same as the Jan 6 attackers when they might have voted for him based on a political basis, but not his ethical rhetoric.
Only more effective at stopping the communists.
