    Hi Al I live in a 1960’s block of flats. My partner and I can not locate the stopcock for our bathroom! Sure enough there is a stopcock underneath the kitchen sink which my partner turned off but apparently that only stops water to the kitchen and not the bathroom! After watching this vid I looked into the airing cupboard and there is a red gate valve with one end going into the water tank and the other end into a pipe going somewhere else. Is this the valve we’ve been searching for to stop water supply to our bathroom/toilet??? Thanks for your vids they’ve helped us out many times😃

    Do you need to drain tank fully to turn off hot water to bathroom hot water tap or is it sufficient to turn off water supply to the cylinder and then turn on hot water tap until water stops flowing - is this a partial draining of the tank ? It would be good to cover three cases 1 turn off water supply to house 2. Turn off cold water supply to taps etc 3. Turn off hot water supply to taps 4. For the hot tap I'll need to turn off the cold supply to the hot water tank in the airing cupboard? Hi there, this will be my first DIY attempt at changing a tap washer. Here's what I remember from when I used to help my dad. Turn off main valve (Stopcock) from outside front of lawn. Run taps. Unscrew tap and change washer. Replace tap with new washer and "bobs ya uncle' - DONE. Now I don't really think it will be that easy so could you please give me advice to stop it from being balls up. I'm also going to turn hotwater cylinder off - at switch.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mandy, there should be a stopcock under your sink, which will make it easier to turn the water off. Also do not drain the tank unless it is a hot tap you are fixing. As you have a hot water cylinder and roof tank, see if you can locate a gate valve in your airing cupboard to turn the hot water off. It is always better if you do not drain the roof tank as you can get airlocks afterwards. The tap repair is as you say, in your description.

    Hi, I'm changing my kitchen monobloc tap. I found where to turn off the cold water mains supply tap but I have a condensing boiler (Potterton Powermax HE with integrated hot water storage tank). There is no tank in the loft and the boiler is in the airing cupboard downstairs. There is one red gate valve in the cupboard on a pipe which feels cold, even when the heatings on. So, the question is: do I only have to turn off the cold water mains stopcock to stop both hot and cold water supply or do I need to turn the red gate valve as well? I have been reluctant to just turn it and see, in case I damage the boiler in some way. Also do I have to turn the boiler off as well? Thanks.

    I think I have the Cold Feed System which I worked out looking at your pretty good diagrams incidentally, I find it takes ages to turn the hot water off after closing a gate valve.
    However I was wondering if I put a normal stop valve on the copper pipe that comes out the top of the hot water cylinder, then I could turn off hot water instantly without draining the cylinder itself. Is this safe to do and why fo typical systems not have a stop valve on this out pipe already?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do not put a stop valve there, that pipe is also the expansion pipe.

      The gate valve is letting by. Best now to turn the mains back off, turn the gate valve on. Then run the hot tap until it completely stops.

    Great video - one question...am about to replace my kitchen mixer tap for the first time with a new kitchen mixer tap - so from what I have googled -
    I know to turn off the combi-boiler, turn off the stopcock, and turn the 2 screws on the hot and cold pipes (of that kitchen sink) from "vertical" to "horizontal"
    - but if I do all that, do I still need to turn all the "individual flow-controls" to OFF on various things, like upstairs bath, bathroom sink, bathroom toilet, etc?
    Or does doing what I listed before that suffice? Thanks from London :-)

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need to turn the screws on the vertical pipes ( ballafix valves) to horizontal position, nothing else.

    Went to replace kitchen sink tap in my new house (built 2003) couldn't work out how to isolate hot, isolated stopcock under sink, ran taps downstairs until flow was zero. Took existing tap apart, lastly taking off hot water pipe annnnnnd.... Drenched???? Wtf... I changed upstairs shower unit doing exact same and no water came out hot or cold. Anyone reading this, especially OP as this is a great wee video with any ideas/advice?
    There are two outlet pipes from hot water tank with iso valves, but they seem to be for radiators.
    Helllllllllllpppppppp for future plz. Cheers in advance.
