  • Test #3 Experimenting with More, but Shorter Radials on the Wolf River Coils Antenna.
    I'm using 15, 2.5 meter radials instead of the 3, 10 meter radials that come with the antenna. How will it work out? Watch and see for yourself.

    Great video, me and my friend made bundles of radials that size {after reviewing your video} in different AWG configurations. Ive used it at my house on top of large sheet metal sections {old historical metal that im using to keep bamboo from coming back} and creates a wonderful ground plane. Im looking fwd to my first park activation and will be sure to try this out. Just love your videos! Holler from Central Texas!

    What is the math (or maybe the rule-of-thumb) behind your 15 radials @ 2.5 meters arrangement? I would have assumed 16 radials @ 2.5 meters would have been the goal so that it added up to 40 meters of wire? I generally aim for a combination of wire lengths to add up to 1 wavelength on the lowest band I plan to operate

    • @todivefor47
      @todivefor47 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume the change in math was to divide by 4 instead of 5, that way keeping it as 1/4 wavelength multiple?

    So, Mike, of all the Wolf River Coils options that are available (coils, stands, whips, etc.) and also considering all the third party whips one can attach, do you have a favorite configuration right now? I'm looking for a good POTA option, but perhaps a good SOTA option too.

    Hi Mike. great video. I love experimenting with antennas and this is helpful for my 40-6m 17' whip with wire. I use a 17' whip on a mirror mount with a length of wire clipped on running to a fishing pole for an inverted L at 40m. 20m and up use the whip only. I have been using 4 33' radials, and 4 15' radials. Going to try using more short radials because the higher bands tune better when I roll up the longer radials. Good food for thought.
    I have been trying to get my WAS with my G90 on ssb. I have two contacts with you in my log on QRZ, and they both show as TX, not MI. I have no confirmed MI contacts, and didn't realize you worked from TX. October last year, and April this year.
    It's funny, I need HI, SD, MI, IA, and CT to get it from WI.

    I found when I eventually got to 18 11ft radials I got a very low swr on all bands using the mini coil and 17ft whip. The 20 meter band low swr entire band and also the 40 meter band. I only needed to use the coil for the 40 meter band and I had low swr about 1:3:1 the entire band. The other bands swr the highest about 1:3:1.

      @forgetyourlife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      18, 11ft radials worked good on 80m? You said all bands but did you try 80m? I use the 17ft Cha-Whip and the mini coil on 80 but can’t get the swr below 2.1 with 16, 16ft radials.

    I just watched one of your videos from a few years ago where you used an Ft891, MFJ 939 and the Tenntenna. Do you prefer a set up like this to something slightly smaller and more compact or is it more fun to really set up shop like this with a larger radio, battery and awning? I’m studying for my General and extremely excited to get in to POTA and SOTA. I love your videos man, huge inspiration. Thanks and 73 from KC1IAM.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You know that's a hard question to answer. I started off with the WRC but quickly developed a crippling addiction to antennas. It really depends on where I'm going and what the landscape is honestly. I recommend having a couple antennas in your kit. As far as the physical act of setting up, it's the same regardless of size equipment (other than the pop up canopy perhaps). Just more weight. If I'm going hiking, I'm certainly not going to bring the big stuff, but going from car to table isn't a big deal. The best advise I could give you is to evaluate the pros and cons of each type of setup and go with whatever one checks off the most boxes. There is no one solution for everything. Good luck on your General! I hope this answer helps and I hope to catch you on the air!

The NL7V station from alaska, paul..Paul... I have made contact with him on both radials setus..setup... very similar rst reports. Just wanted to share another test situation. Would love to see if gauge of wire matters for radials. I see alot of 18awg radials, but there is alot of 26awg. That is a huge difference. for portable use with couple dozen radials, thinner would be better and cheaper BUT is 26awg as effective as 18awg. If not, by how much?? negligible? like 15watts vs 20 watts or is it like 15watts to 45 watts?

    Interesting stuff. It’s informative to read the experimental work of Rudi Severns, N6LF - he has well characterised the effect of radial length on antenna efficiency. Of particular interest is one paper in which he discusses the implication of radial length with respect to position of the current maximum along the radial, its effect on ground losses and therefore signal strength. That article caused me to review my understanding of length of radials on the ground. It’s probably more complex than we’re taught - the length probably does matter. I now carry a set of radials for each band - they’re not a random length and they’re not 1/4 wavelength either. Rudi’s work is well worth the read. Happy experimenting.

    • @bensmith4563
      @bensmith4563 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My understanding is the more wire down the better so if you have 100 feet of wire it should roughly perform equally regardless how many radials you have though I firmly believe for the lower bands like 80 and 40 3 33 footers would be better than 10 10 foot radials radials I wouldn't be surprised if 20 10 foot radials would out perform 3 33 foot radials on 80 and 40 just because it's twice as much wire on the ground I could be wrong though I am kinda dumb after all

    Many short radials = Capacitive coupling to ground... and since you are right next to that lake, it should be a very good ground! :) -- I think that I am going to stay away from using computer or phone for logging... seems to be much easier to write it down! - but you seem to be doing great with that setup! :) -- You are making me feel like trying to get out to some park, and do some more activations!!! I would think that the bigger gauge could improve how well it gets out, since it would have more surface area to radiate from. I have also heard stranded works better than solid core, also because of surface area.
