- I have a real treat for horse lovers from our video archives. Let go back to 1996 to the Paint World Championship. There was a horse named Colonels Smoking Gun being shown by Clint Haverty in the Reining Futurity. This horse became an industry in itself. His foals change the face of reining, not only in the Paint world, but also in NRHA as well as AQHA. You can always tell his foals by the chrome on their legs/face. This living legend is known to all of us by: GUNNER. Now watch this awesome horse reining as a three year old during the summer of 1996. It is our honor to once again to present: GUNNER
My husband and I were at this show. I also own a Gunner On Ice colt and these Smoking Gun horses are phenomenal! We also met again with Hank Weiscamp and got his signed and autographed book as we bought a 1994 branded stud colt from him. He is dearly missed. We still have that colt we bought from him and that horse is now 25 years old and still going strong! :-D
He was such an amazing horse. Sooo talented. But he sure does throw a lot of deaf babies too.

I found out the hard way with one of these babies. He couldn't hear a single thing. You get what you get I guess. Very prominent in his breeding.
Yeah, a real treat. in 2019 he was still ranked the top sire in NRHA followed by 2 sons for 2nd and 3rd spot followed by his half brother's son for the 4th spot. That is pretty dominant. Though his mama, Katie Gun, is tying all this together so she deserves a lot of the glory too.
I guess he is a 3-year-old in this video - what a chillax guy.

Much better head carriage, wow, than all current reining horses who are forced to eat dirt and hang their heads (and spirit) as if they were dead lame.
For future reference (to those who aren't aware of, or may be confused by, the European way of writing dates), this horse passed away on July 8, 2013.

Isn' t this the horse that created an entire line of deaf reining horses? Way to go.
Over 12 million in earnings worth - he is totally dominant as a sire and sire of sires...guess being deaf is an advantage for reining performance horses -- probably wouldn't be out in the wild but in this modern world doesn't appear to be much of a disadvantage.

It's not Gunner that "created" it. Many paints with the splashed white pattern are deaf.
Oh, and he was a crop out.
Makes me sick they have bred this line Soo much. Soo many deaf horses and most folks don't even know how to train them properly. It's quite disturbing.

Got a grandson of him Ip Gunner Spark deaf as well anyway I think that to make them work like that at 3 years is not a good thing. My Gunny I completely broken and doesn’t want to work any more in reining

Shelly Webster pretty horses, but the deafness in my opinion, that’s a genetic issue that should not be bred.
