Volunteering to help further the cause of science is a noble endeavour, but as Tom Steinfort discovers, being a human guinea pig can also hurt like hell. He has just experienced a spectacular but rather painful adventure around Australia with a group of researchers on an extraordinary mission.
While most people would instinctively run from the dangerous creepy crawlies of the outback, these brave scientists deliberately seek out spiders, scorpions and centipedes, and then invite them to attack. Their aim is to get bitten to understand the pain of the stings. They then use the information, as well as the venom they collect, to develop much-needed medicines and painkillers. It’s amazing work that’s already saving lives.

For over forty years, 60 Minutes have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. Tales that changed history, our nation and our lives. Reporters Liz Hayes, Tom Steinfort, Tara Brown, Nick McKenzie and Amelia Adams look past the headlines because there is always a bigger picture. Sundays are for 60 Minutes.

Thank you ALL *so much* for this work: these scientists, this production, all of it. As a person who has had to live with intractable pain for the last 25+ years with no end in site except my death, this mission could not be more appreciated. Wish I could support more directly. 💜

Ditto! I think it's the accent paired with amazing stories about amazing people like these scientists who aren't in our MSM because they are so far away.
Even their Inside Edition is really good, imo. It's less tv tabloid news, I find.

One good thing about the frozen winters here in Canada is we have very few creepy crawlers that can hurt you, 99.9% are harmless. We do have to watch out for rampaging moose tho...

Kings of Pain are doing this is well (without the science lab). Also Jack from Jack's World of Wildlife. These men are being deliberately stung so we can know more about what the venoms and toxins do to the human body. I so appreciate men like this scientist who is helping the world of medicine so incredibly much.

Anti-venom has been thoroughly studied a lot of the time you cannot find any available is because they have a shelf-life and it's not profitable for the pharmaceutical companies to produce. Remember greed is far more important than saving lives these days.

Anyway, yes, my doc & I call the meds a "toolbox" b/c there are so many and all necessary (& another pain in my butt!;). God Bless and hope one day these scientists will find a cure for our pain! 💜

What is more interesting about that stinging tree is there is the odd individual that DOESN'T feel thd pain from these. My father inlaw saw a fellow rub his arms with it to no effect. He still can believe it to this this day. That would be interesting to study.

Go to the tourist spots and ask around about legit likelihood of these things and you’ll probs never even see something deadly. Some snakes in summer in some areas, some cute looking animals that are clearly wild and should be left as any wild animal should be, stuff like that, but honestly, you’re bloody missing out based on some fluff and hype, you only live once mate. ☺️👍

@@MakerInMotion The pain meds are required whether their is potential to addiction or not. It is 1st and foremost "do no harm"! The Dr's are required to provide all & any pain relief necessary to keep patients from incurring more stress while fight cancer or any deadly disease. We seriously need to stop worrying abt something that might or might NOT happen. Fix what's broken, then go from their.

He clearly stated, that the pain to which he was refering is caused by very specific cancer drugs which cause the patient to become hypersensitive to both heat and cold.
For a patient who is on these cancer chemotherapies, the PAIN which the patient experiences to anything in which they come into contact with is so EXCRUCIATING, that they choose to stop the treatment, as for them, dying from cancer is preferable to going through months of unimaginable pain, for which there are no drugs strong enough to control it.

Chemo is notorious for causing internal body temps to go out of wack, and that is permanent in my case & many others. But pain meds were never denied, and if those didn't work they would try something different. And this was in the days when a phone call to pharmacy was sufficient. Try to hold your insults down.
