    I was at the show at the Filmore in Detroit April 5, 2019. It was one of just 8 US dates. Absolutely a great show. Been a Mott fan since 1972 and have all their recordings. Great to see a bunch of old guys still bang it out.

    I didn't go to any of this Summer's Mott gigs. But from what I've seen here on TH-cam - imho - Luther Grosvenor didn't strike me as someone who could remember what he'd played back in the day, or that he'd bothered to re-learn what he'd forgotten. I couldn't see (or hear) any real musicianship to speak of, on his part, just some leaping around. I've been a fan of Ian Hunter and MTH since 1972, and later, the Rant Band, and seen a lot of their gigs down the years. What was telling for me was that, contrary to just about every one of those gigs, none of the other players (particularly Jim Mastro, who normally can't keep the smile off his face) seemed to be really enjoying themselves.
    Having been to some blistering MTH and Rant Band gigs (notably at the Barbican, London, 3rd May 2010, and Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London, 11th November 2016), this performance doesn’t come close.
    Musicians need to be connected on many levels to play together well, but imho it’s pretty plain to see that Grosvenor didn’t fit in with the other players, and it seemed to me that the chemistry the band needed to produce a really cracking performance, just wasn’t there.

    Good to see and hear these oldies once again, Honaloochie Boogie was my first real (paid for with my paper round money) singles purchase all those years ago, fond memories, have followed Mott The Hoople et al since then. Never did get to see them live though TH-cam is providing us all an opportunity to film and distribute locally, so am not complaining :) Rock on Mott the Hoople!

    Saw them back in 1973 at St George’s Hall, Bradford, Ariel Bender was the ultimate show off guitarist, brilliant, still is by the look of it!

    Hey all the young dudes... Respect gentlemen... Great band. They had some good stuff for sure but the competition from the rest of the British Invasion more or less overshadowed them... But what a time to have been in the music scene as a rock band.

    We all have our favorites. 2 songs from Mad Shadows are my favorites: No Wheels to Ride, and I Can Feel (I like this even more than All the Young Dudes). But they lost their signature organ sound after Verden left, then 'Mott' was really good, but Mick left. And 'The Hoople' sucks except for Marionette. Too bad, they fell apart just when they hot it big. (The follow-up group Mott is actually a really good band. Overend's time to shine, and Morgan's brilliance on piano brought a new sound. It is really a differnt band and now totally dismissed, which is too bad , because MTH's worst LPs are 'The Hoople' and 'Live.')

    I don’t understand the backlash to this Mott The Hoople partial-reunion tour. They haven’t toured the States in 45 years, and Ian, merely a few months shy of becoming a octogenarian, still sounds as riveting and wonderful as ever, as do Morgan Fisher and Ariel Bender/Luther Grosvenor. The complaints about Luther/Ariel are pretty undeserved, especially considering that his stage antics and performance are nearly on par with what he did on the ‘74 tour.

    Luther sure is painful to listen to & infuriating to watch trying desperately to upstage Ian, totally disrespectful of Ian’s glorious songs & legacy. Ian & the Rant Band + the excellent Morgan are clearly ignoring him as best they can. What a wonderful, magical band they used to be.

    • @davidsleger5824
      @davidsleger5824 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there is some truth to your comment but they knew exactly what they were getting with Luther on board. He was the same in '74

      David Sleger - yep exactly right David. Saw them at Ramblin’ Man Festival 2 nights ago - Ian was fantastic & the band were pretty good. Morgan was great. Luther was just nonsense, wandering aimlessly around the stage annoying the guys in the band, often darting around like someone’s deranged granny. He didn’t play most of the songs as he clearly hadn’t learned or remembered how to play them, just ducking in & out to play a simple riff or a few chords or a dodgy lick. One or two songs he just stood off stage. Ian almost totally ignored him, his pathetic antics & making silly squwaky noises with a guitar. Ian just got on with the job. Been a fan forever, some of the wonderful songs were soundtracks to our lives & it’s crazy to see them thrown away or disrespected.

    This is merely a shell of a once great band.If it sounded like this to begin with they never would have made it.Its painful to watch after looking at the real vids from the early seventies.Dusty old rock and roll.It sounds flat and tired now.Should just call it a day at this point.

    Bender is nothing,Mick Ralphs should have been there instead of that jerk.as somebody said he.s playing at Ian,s expense ,and not good at all the 2 rant guitarists are a lot better.a lot of his arm jesters don,t even match the music,plus he,s not even using a pick,

      Hi Danni - think his guitar is well down in the mix - I'm hearing it from a few different sources and the guitar is clearer on other uploads. 3 rehearsals then this gig. I'm sure it will only get better -Certainly got the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. He's a perfect visual foil for Ian Hunter.. Such a shame it ended as it did in '
      74...
