Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

My wife wonders why I don’t like cities… I told her I used to be homeless in the city. Guess she don’t believe me. But when I show her these videos she gets it. Sad part is this is 100x worse than anything I’ve been through, people were high and crazy but not stuck on pause.

I've watched a number of the Streets of Philadelphia video's now and I'm completely appalled. How can a city or state let this kind of behavior and conditions exist? The sheer amount of human decay is staggering! We are watching the Decline of Western Civilization unfold right before out eyes!!! Tragic in my opinion...

Decline of Western Civilization? The problem of drug use and homelessness on this scale is an American problem. You think the streets of Canadian cities are this bad, or English cities, French, German etc etc. America has the worst social safety net and the worst overall healthcare of all of the western nations and this is the result.
And here I thought living in a small town with family all around me was the worse thing to happen to me, boy was I wrong to the fullest. Watching this made me love the life I get to live.

I assume the publicity of all the internet observers might of had something to do with the clean up on the 18th and the assistance given to the homeless people in find a place to live healthier than the city streets. They also had rehab people out there trying to induce the addicts to get help.

it looks to me like most people here are strung out on methadone - heroin addicts who now use methadone daily cuz its available at local clinics.
I think the right range goes from Poor to middle for 80% of Mexicans, most ppl would be happy to take a job in the US for 7-10 an hour, this ppl has that chance and they rather to go to the streets to have this life I just can’t start to imagine what u have to go tru to call this “life”.

I’m fortune to be able to come home with a bed, warm blankets and a roof over my head. I’m a college student tackling two jobs in order to pay my tuition, there are moments when I think my life is difficult, and this video has helped put my thoughts into perspective.

Alot of these people are on heroin, fentanyl or a combination of the two. I'm sure there is a multitude of other drugs too but the heroin and fentanyl are the most viscious, addictive, soul sapping and deadly substances anywhere. Very, very difficult to get off of and once one starts shooting up with a needle almost impossible to kick. Its easy to spot those on heroin as they tend to look like they are falling asleep or are asleep, frequently in unnatural positions. And the ones that have taken fentanyl, too much fentanyl or a combo of both drugs are the ones you see doing all the strange posturing (bent over, arm in the air, rocking and falling backwards, lots of body movement but with their feet in one place), the odd poses and movements. There are as many reasons for landing on the street as there are people on it. And a lot were probably addicts when they got there. However, its important to remember that it is a sad, scary, lonely hopeless place to be. It feels absolutely awful. Its heartbreaking and it destroys people. How could they not end up using? Must be desperate to escape, feel something better, numb the pain. In m come heroin. Most of them will also tell you that they have noone. That their families and friends have thrown them away, want nothing to do with them, disowned them. It doesnt matter now if it was for prior drug use or other reasons, the damage is done and it is devastating. To think nobody cares. So sad. A viewer named Kusumo Bayo left a comment something to the effect..."reminds me of the importance of strong structured family and friends." Excuse me Kusumo if that is not verbatim. What you said was spot on, 100% correct and must be considered when dealing with people in this horrific predicament. And they ARE people. They are people in trouble and they need help. Please remember that.
I was addicted to heroin for 20 years, used all my veins including my fems, if I use now it's only 2or3 times a month and I can only smoke it now although I do take methadone daily, so it is possible to stop injecting

When I see all those filthy tent communities with trash and drug paraphernalia strewn everywhere, I count my blessings that I at least have a roof over my head and food in the fridge. I used to deliver to the Walgreens in the first few minutes of this video. 3 years ago it was bad but I see it's turned far worse. Every week I was there and every week I saw people shooting up, theft, and people committing sex acts in the alley. The video can't convey the stench. The smell of urine, trash and feces. A homeless man in a wheelchair liked to hang around the back of the store flinging his own excrement at passers by and writing things on the stockroom door... and this was before the tents.

А мой друг был в Оклахоме, ещё в 2008 году, и всё это уже видел тогда. We could learn a lot from Japanese culture. I remember watching in awe after the tsunami of 2011, as the Japanese people stood desperately yet peacefully in lines for days waiting for rations. I can only imagine the level of chaos, looting, rioting, etc that would've taken place here in the US under similar conditions.

Sadly, the government can only do so much. If a person is not motivated to live a purposeful life, no amount of help can improve their situation. Illegal drugs can ruin any society but that is not the only cause.

Been going there every other day for the past month. Too long to explain my life, but I've been an addict for 14 years, and tried so many times to get off. Been on methadone for 4 years, and was doing so good for 3 years too not going anywhere like that ever again, or so I thought.
The past year I've been messing up and using on top of dosing, and would go once a month and stop, get sick (on top of methadone use), and restart the cycle again. Well, now I fucked up and have been using for the past 30 days straight, and the last 20 of those days were by me attempting to detox off of it. Failed, got more, do a lot the day I get, and then try to only do one or two a day until I'm out and freak out and repeat the fucking cycle again.
It's a miserable life, and I'm so afraid I'll turn into one of these homeless dwellers. I'm lucky enough to live in the suburbs miles away from this mess, but all it takes is for the fire I'm playing with to grow into a global inferno. So many people you see here are institutionalized to this camaraderie. It's their own way of life and it's PRIMAL. it can happen to me, and can happen to you. Anything can happen through the sands of time, so just stay the fuck away from hard drugs please everyone.

Guaranteed we’ve crossed paths, I’m in a similar situation except I don’t buy oxys like I used to I buy adderall for when my script runs out because they have me on low dose. Montgomeryville I come from. I was hopeless addicted to them I could do 160mgs just to feel normal and so I’d need at least 320mg to get high at the end, I went to rehab multiple times and it was hard but I personally figured out I was using because I just had no self worth or anything, drugs were my identity and as messed up as it is you feel a part of something. I used subs for a year and tapered down and haven’t touched one in 8 years at least

Tough love is needed to stop these horror shows: 1) Criminal offence to loiter on the streets. 2) Large fines or jail for littering the streets. 3) Very long prison sentences for drug pushers. 4) Consequences for any theft or other criminal activity. 5) Temporary government housing. No drugs allowed. Self-sufficient. Tenants must maintain the housing and surrounding area for their keep. Rehabilitation and schooling a requirement. 6) Employment in a different area.
