    Awesome Olivia! Your video's made not only my decision to move here to Iqaluit easier, but for my family to see where I was going. I'm one month here and loving it.

    Hi Olivia, I am just going to correct some things on here as a life long resident of Iqaluit. :)
    Once a polar bear comes into town, wildlife officers will try to scare it away from town but if it keeps returning they will put it down and they will harvest the meat to distribute towards the elders of the community as cooked polar bear meat is a delicacy in our culture.
    Tim Horton's are all (on the go) and not kept very clean, Stay away from Northmart! lol
    Beware of going to the Apex low tide as the tide comes in very quickly. but it is so beautiful on a calm high tide too.
    IQ Day is a day to appreciate inuit culture, I know that the Government of Nunavut employees get 2 per year one in the summer which can be used to go clam digging, fishing or berry picking and same thing in the spring for ice fishing or sledding.
    Taxi - All fares are 8 dollars per person including apex but to places beyond west 40, bridge at road to nowhere and upper-upper base beyond plateau is 20 dollars.
    Iqaluit Summer- Once you have been environmentally northernized summers can get quite hot lol.

    Greetings from Germany. I will visit Toronto in early November and plan to fly to Iqaluit for a week afterwards. Prices aside: Can you recommend it? I want to experience the arctic feeling, especially the winter, northern lights and so in.

    I have been a life long northerner and understand the isolation and feeling of loneliness that comes from living in the north but I would not give it up for anything. One thing I find with southerners I find is their absolute lack of knowledge about life and living in Northern Canada the beauty of summer and the absolute starkness of winter which has its own set of beauty however like most northerners I can live without the bugs in the summer.
    I do enjoy your videos and your perspective as a young couple living in Northern Canada I do hope to see more of your take on living in the north and I do hope you will show more of northern life

      Thank you! I absolutely loved Iqaluit for the first year. I think having a baby changed it for me, as I didn’t feel I could get out as much, but also I think I had some sort of post partum anxiety that played a factor!
      Iqaluit is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been. I wish more people could experience it. And I agree with the mosquitos! 😛

      Post partum takes its toll for sure and lets face it raising children in an isolated community is rough on the adults the kids could care less they always find ways to entertain themselves but as a friend of mine said when she had her kids in Deese Lake, BC (isolated community in north west B.C.) she was going stir crazy because it was so tiny of a community and a 6 hr drive from the closest big town (Ft St John). Iqaluit is considerable larger than Deese Lake but is no less isolated and as a parent that is always a scary thing feeling trapped and lots of time to think

    Hey there !
    From my experience in Iqaluit, I noticed that the houses are quite rough on the outside as well….often times this is the result of sheer abuse towards the buildings….often times, just so people can get their hands on something flammable for a bonfire….wood is at a premium up there, as you’re past the tree line and they don’t grow up there….
    Nothing beats a bonfire made from the fascia of your house!!!

    What has been your experience with Inuktitut so far? Can you read it (or speak it)? I think it could be helpful if you make a video about it. Thanks for these videos.

    • @OliviaIrwin4
      @OliviaIrwin4  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I can’t read it or speak it at all! My husband has learned a couple of phrases due to his work but it would definitely be a lot of work to learn it! I love listening to it though, even if I don’t understand.

    Hi, I have a question about cars there. How do people buy new cars? Is there a new car dealership with some on hand in town, or do they have to be ordered and shipped in via boat?

    • @Wander-a-Bit
      @Wander-a-Bit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they come on a ship from down south in the summer, you can get a used car there but no dealership.

    • @silaineak3636
      @silaineak3636 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nunavut Auto is a dealership, (sort of) it is apart of NAPA Auto.

    Are there community services such as swimming for families, babies etc? What about drop in day care services while at these activities? Is there a library with programs for young moms housebound? Anything else?

    • @OliviaIrwin4
      @OliviaIrwin4  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are! Swimming lessons, daycares and a baby program at the library once a week are all available :) there is also sometimes a drop in playgroup.

    I'm thinking of accepting a 5 month IT contract at the government office, accomodation is paid, I was curious on price of internet and speed. I realize groceries are expensive, but I receive a hefty per diem...any tips would be appreciated

      We were with Ice wireless. I don’t remember price but wasn’t outrageous and while it was slower than what we were used to, it was fine! I was still able to upload TH-cam videos 😛

    I would pick a lot of berries especially low bush cranberries. They are the same as Christmas cranberries but much tastier.

      It’s all relative! Although you spend more than down south, many people also make more. It kind of evens out!

  • @amaruq1248
    @amaruq1248 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmm
    true not a lot of people have cars but it doesnt mean there wont be lots still.
    the last few months of 2021, there we lots of foxes in town. a few had rabies :/ and the humane society was closed and i dont think we have a vet so few fogs had to be put down.
    also we are in the polar bears habitat i think... could be wrong. also when my mom first came here like 30 years ago she said she would normally see carribou behing the old hospital, but iqaluit changed and you never see them now.
    aha~ the doctors... all im gonna say is they got gossip.
    yes houses need a new paint job. but most of the houses on my road did, also one burned down a few years ago, sometime before the pandemic. and last year our roof blew off. maybe it was 2020, idk sometime during the pandemic.
    we got bottled water everywhere cause of the bottled water problem last year. also theres a booster juice now, they renovated the astro hill place, and put a pharmacy in the old cbc building.
    YES BLUEBERRY SEASON
    though sadly thesee past few years my family missed it cause we were stuck quarantining in ottawa.
    summer...
    no thanks i hate the mosquitoes. but the weather is just perfect so its not all bad.
    .... i should go to sleep its 2:20 am lmao

    This video is terribly inaccurate. There is no such thing as a berry picking day. Most people do not own cars.
    It perhaps is because the narrator was new and simply does not know the realities of Arctic life.
    Sorry but this video is inaccurate enough that I cannot recommend it.
