- During our last session at my online class "GypsyGuitarAcademy", Bireli & I were talking about his gigs with Jaco Pastorius back in the 80s.
So we had the idea that it would be cool to do a tribute recording for Jaco.
Today would mark his 72nd birthday (1st December 1951).
In addition to his legacy as a gypsy swing guitarist, Bireli Lagrene also shows us his funkiness! We were left speechless ;)

The Chicken" or simply "Chicken" is an instrumental funk tune composed by Pee Wee Ellis that was the B-side to James Brown's 1969 single "The Popcorn". The tune gained greater exposure with versions by Jaco Pastorius. Bravo, Mr. Pastorius!

Was raised on jazz in the 50's, my dad having his own trio. When I picked up the guitar he gave me my first chord book, by Joe Pass. At 70 years young, Joscho S. on TH-cam is my go-to! Merry Xmas gentlemen, and thank you for all the beautiful music...
Funky! Every time you post a video it inspires me to pick up the guitar and try to be 1/1000th as good as you guys. You've just set me back a few years with this one!
I would argue the 'funk' mainly came from Brecker on this one, but this tune is one for the ages; Jaco is beyond a legend Thanks for sharing and excellent job!

Very nice improv anything associated with Jaco Pastorious catches my attention as I’m a old Florida boy just like Jaco born in 51 me 52 both grew up in old Florida those were some nice times and I loved his work in Weather Report Punk Jazz and Havona my favorites man I miss Jaco RIP my man😢

Superb performance by your brilliant trio! I love it! I recently bought the "Biréli Lagrène play Loulou Gasté" CD at an F.N.A.C. but alas, I can't find any Joscho Stéphan CDs. What a shame!
Some of Joscho's & the Trio themselves are on iTunes/Apple Music, but not all of them unfortunately 😭 They did a version of Cherokee with Mathias Strucken on Piano that I wish that they had recorded & cut for release but they didn't/haven't as of yet. And this one is another one that I wish that they would cut & release

If you tried to put the nylon strings that this guy plays on a classical or flaminco guitar the bridge would go flying. I know about string tension because I have actually measured it on many strings at many different scale lengths.
