    I never had a cervical exam during either of my pregnancies unless it was that very first exam after finding out you’re pregnant or I was in labor 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve heard it’s unnecessary outside of that. I would pass on this honestly, unless it’s some extreme urgent need.

    Question: I had one last week (36wks), the procedure was normal but I'm quite pissed (was not warned about the potential pain and following pelvic cramps on my way home). Seriously, why can't an endoscopy be used to assess cervical dilatation, can't an image just be taken (less invasive and more precise)? no finger can measure thickness objectively, come on. Endoscopy or any other tool (ultrasound, optical imagery) less invasive and less painful, with all the devices we have today. Please, I will really appreciate not to be fingered! We can send a man on the moon since the 60s, and Hubble can take a picture of most remote planets but in 2020 they still can't take a picture of that inner ring of mine. We are not cows!

    What's the usefulness of a check at 36 weeks if you're not planning induction at that point for medical reasons/imminently worried about preterm labor? A well trained OB can usually determine if the baby is head down based on Leopolds manuevers alone. Ultrasound is also useful and non-invasive. Curiosity kills the cat. Let's use our brains and not just do what the previous generation told us to do.

    After cervix checkup in 36 weeks I started bleeding for 2 days .3rd day started pain afer sometime leaking membrane from vagina I went to hospital the doctors suggested it should be done c-section delivery to much painful .so don't do mistakes to go and check ur cervix examination

    I had very different cervix check experiences depending on who was doing it. I had a female doctor do it at 36w and it was super uncomfortable, and two male doctors who did it at 37 and 38w and it didn't hurt at all. Then a CRNP did it at 39 weeks and omg it was so uncomfortable, she actually suggested I reconsider my desire for a drug free birth because of my reaction 😑 They also stripped my membranes at 40w and I had no idea they were going to do it! I did end up going into labor that evening. I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced when they did it

      Thanks for sharing. My at home midwife did my cervix checks and they were SO PAINFUL and then when I was at the hospital the midwife there did a cervix check and I barely felt it. The first check I wasn't dilated and the second one I was 6 cm dilated... It makes me wonder if it was the person who just sucked at doing them or if it was that I was more dilated so it didn't hurt as bad. I also think my midwife tried doing a sweep without telling me. I really dislike that they think they're being helpful but not being honest about it.

    I don't mean to scare anyone, but getting a cervix check was painful, with the doctor checking and feeling his nails. The cultures test was uncomfortable and a little painful. I actually saw, what they call old blood, a brown discharge for a couple of days. It freaked me out. I just want to have a natural child birth. This video was helpful, now I want to go ask my doctor have I dilated. If that's how you say it lol I'm due in a couple of weeks. Excited and ready for the baby already.

    You seem like a very good doctor. My doc checked my cervix today and hurt me😢 i screamed a bit too he just went in with his fingers hard and pushed up fast that it was all done within 3 seconds and it hurt me.. he was rude he ask me if I was still sure about having a normal delivery... like trying to say that I can’t handle pain. And it was just bad. Wish he was more understanding 😢

      Sandra David same here! I would NEVER let a male physician touch me below the belt. I think for a man to want to be an OB, they’re a pervert. Out of all the specialties you can specialize in, why vaginas? This doctor on the video seems like a perv as well. He probably likes to feel in control as he touches vulnerable women in the lithotomy position.

  • @MedTwice
    @MedTwice  12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Good question. I check at 36 weeks to confirm that the baby is head down. This involves the same type of exam as checking the cervix. Most of my patients also want me to tell them if the cervix is dilated or effaced. If a patient is scheduled for a c-section I do not check the cervix at 36 weeks as the position of the baby is not important.

    But I already have small pain in that area and am scared about it

  • @MedTwice
    @MedTwice  11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The cervical exam requires just sterile gloves and lubricant. I would not recommend checking the cervix at home. It is easy to reach the cervix but difficult to interpret what you are feeling. It generally requires multiple exams to train people how to gauge cervical changes. The exam is likely to be uncomfortable (if not downright painful) for your wife and it is doubtful you will gain any useful information. This is not so much a safety issue but a comfort issue.

      I'm high risk and they checked me 34 weeks and I already started dilating I got checked again 35 weeks to check progress and I was even more so I was told to pack a bag. I go in again at 36 weeks to see if I'm 3cm now or if I stayed the same. For some it's a good way to know what is happening. Hopefully I helped answer your question. I'm not a dr though.

If you've never come into contact with HPV through sex you are completely safe from ever needing to be tested. The lifetime risk is 0.68% of all women will die from cervical cancer or was it be diagnosed. Go look it up. I'm 51 and have never had a pap. Never plan to now that I'm educated.

    It is one of those funny words that is often pronounced "incorrectly" in medical circles. It is generally pronounced with 3 syllables outside of the medical field. In medicine, either pronunciation is considered acceptable. Another example of this is the word centimeter, many people in the medical community pronounce it "sontimeter".
