  • The goal of the darkroom timer build is to make it without much fuss, it’s inexpensive and accessible to anyone with basic knowledge.
    In part three there's a lot of firsts for me. Let me explain, first I used Fiverr for the 3D design. This article is not sponsored I paid everything with my own money. Secondly I used AI to optimised the code just for fun by the way it's complete crap at writing articles regarding darkroom in fact it's quite funny however it mixes thing up.
    If you haven't already read part one, please do check it out, then things maybe a bit more clearer. • Part I - Build a F-ST...
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction
    0:31 Bike run across Graz
    1:41 3D Print design
    2:24 Optimising the code
    3:10 Adding in the beeper
    5:07 Testing in the darkroom
    6:38 3D Print assembly
    9:07 Final thoughts
    Darkroom timer are simple but don’t work the way they should. At least time based ones they are linear. Photography isn’t linear. F-Stops are logarithmic, i.e twice the light or half the light through the lens aperture. The enlarger is essential a camera in reserve. This easy to build darkroom timer will not only show exposure in time but it also display in F-Stops.
    F- stop printing was originally made popular by the award winning printer Gene Nocon in 1987. If you want the full explanation, you can find it in his book Photographic Printing (now out of print, but available on the second hand market), or you could take a look at this interview with him.

    Just built it and it was such a great way to get an inexpensive timer, as someone giving darkroom printing their first try. Many, many thanks for all the work you put in to get it up and running.
    The only feature I would suggest would be the addition of an extra step in the strip test where the user would press a button to begin each section when the enlarger turns on, in place of the one-second delay. I might have a go at trying to add it myself, but it's a long time since I've coded. Anyhow, fair play, and thanks again.

      Thanks Adam. Sorry for delay, I overlooked the comment. BTW there is new code already available to fix some things. I'm planning a follow up video too. You can always add an 'Issue' for the manual strip step on github github.com/glyons/Darkroom-Timer/issues I know someone else suggested another option for strip test too.

    Thanks for this great tool Gavin. I am trying to figure out how to change to base time to a value I choose. Can you explain how to accomplish this? Thanks.
    I asked this before,m cut cannot find my post??

      @GavinLyonsCreates  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you trying to do a strip test or a normal exposure? Normally the plus/minus buttons usually change this in f-stop intervals.

      @@GavinLyonsCreates I have been trying to get used to the strip test mode. When I press + or - it does change the F-stop along with the time. But, I cannot see how I choose the base time to start the operation. It only shows what seem to be predetermined times. For example, if I want a base time of 7 secs, how do I put that in? I have several spreadsheet calculators for this use, as well as an app for my Android, and they allow inputting the base time before it does the calcs for eash step. I am lost. ??
      BTW, I have two of the timers set up and running. Easy peasy!! Thanks.

      You can change the step increments to 1/16 or 1/8 to get a more gradual value. Hope that does the trick. Best Gavin

      Not yet, I'm hoping to redo the enclosure. Just quite busy at the moment. I'm open for takers to do it though :-D

    Hi I'm interested in purchasing your timer through Esty, but I have a few questions. In the description of the timer is the following:
    The kit is pre-assembled however no mains socket or plug are provided with the kit. It is up to the end-user and their responsibility to wire it up.
    I'm not sure what this means would you please elaborate. I was also wondering if you made the changes to the timer box as you indicated in Part III of your You Tube videos, i.e. added larger Start button and added footswitch jack. If you have made these changes is there a pre-assembled version available to the public.
    Thanks for your videos. It's always nice to know others are still working in wet darkrooms.

      Hi Frank, Thank you so much for your interest. I would add the pedal jack to the timer without extra cost.
      Regarding the plug and socket this is not provided as each country/region has their own requirements. I'm based in Austria so I could provide an EU type socket.
      The bigger push button I'm still think about too.
      I hope that helps.
      Gavin

      Thanks for the clarification on the plug and socket; I suspected that might be the issue. I would appreciate your adding the pedal jack if I purchase the timer. One last question before I commit to the purchase. Are the software bugs still an issue and if so will the updated software be available and capable of being installed on the purchased product? Thanks for your videos and for taking the initiative in developing this timer; I've wanted an f stop timer for some time.

      @@GavinLyonsCreates Also! is it possible to use a dim "amber" display instead of the 'red'? when doing RA4 colour, it's safer that way. Plus, I'm part of a big whatsapp group of printers, and there might be more people interested in the timer (also, if you're interested, please join, we're mostly in Europe and there's people from the Fuji factory in the group)

    • @GavinLyonsCreates
      @GavinLyonsCreates  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alejandropastor96 I'm planning some code updates and adding the pedal switch. The display is a 7 segment display these don't come in orange unfortunately however a filter gel might work to restrict the desired wavelength of light. Unfortunately RA printing is something I know very little about.
