Counting, rhythm, swing, articulation, dynamics, groove and feel are all very closely connected. They deserve the practice time to improve your timing, technique and feel which elevates you above more technically or theoretically proficient players. There are only 12 notes but infinite rhythms!
Counting is not the same as rhythm: Counting is how you navigate through and feel the rhythm in your head. Better counting leads to better timing, and good timing leads to rhythmic accuracy.
"Some people think of a note first and put a rhythm to it and some people think of a rhythm first and put a note to it”-Dizzy Gillespie
I'll teach you to visualise the counts available to us in a logical fashion. You can extend the concept to all time signatures and subdivisions. Focus on accenting the beats at even tempo, and let the subdivisions flow quietly and organically.
Rhythmic accuracy doesn't mean metronomic or robotic, it means locked in tightly with the other players and the 'feel' expectations of the genre. Precisely how you divide the space between the beats is an essential component of swing and groove.
You can 'practice' when you're away from the instrument by just counting along to recordings to see exactly how they place the subdivisions and accents.
If you can't say it, you can't play it.

Great video! I really like the concept you were discussing of extracting "groove templates" from our favorite songs. It would be great to see a video where you try to extract the "groove templates" from some of your favorite pieces or songs. Either way, there is a lot of super handy advice here. Thanks!

Cheers for that! I reckon that would be a very challenging concept to get across in a video 🙃 love the idea though, I'll think about how to possibly do that... Thanks

I studied tabla for 3 years, helped me somewhat and was a lot of fun because the “Guru” was good! My didn’t like the sounds or ragas!

I have done a few percussion classes in the past and have always found them greatly beneficial and inspiring. You'll have got a lot out of them I'm sure! Cheers

Really great video. Well done! I need tips on how to count in 2/2 time. I can do all the other time quite well. Stay safe!

Hi Adoli- This shouldn't be too much of a challenge if you already have 4/4 down! You can choose to count 2/2 as 4/4 and subdivide each half beat count into two quarter counts. Or you can count the subdivisions as halves which I prefer. 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + etc. Find some songs which you like and are written in 2/2 and count along until you feel you can dance to it then you know you've got it nailed!

Hi Chesterton, thanks for your comment. Yes I do online tutoring. I am also in the process of launching a group coaching site which I believe will be equally as effective as one on one lessons but for much cheaper and I'll be able to help many more people. Send me a message at ctharrisonmusic@gmail.com if you want a chat. Cheers

Alternatively you can sign up for an upcoming free two week course which I'll be launching around the end of May. It'll be focused on all the things which I believe to be important but are often overlooked in super flashy guitar magazines and websites.
