I don't have much experience hand sewing leather, but I once made some minor repairs to a vintage leather jacket. What made all the difference was using a glovers needle and waxed quilting thread. Oddly enough, this is something I picked up from years of sewing pointe shoes. A glovers needle has a very sharp angled tip that is wider than the rest of the needle, so that it cuts into tough fabric easily, and then slides right through. The waxed quilting thread is strong, and slippery, so that helps too.
Why is this tutorial not the most popular thing on TH-cam? We've been obsessing over the Mansur Gavriel bags for forever but it's almost impossible to get one. Awesome video! Would love to collaborate with you one day!
well honey when you're a struggling student it's not about agreeing or not it's about can I afford it or not:P later on in life when I'm ballin' I'll buy the real deal
+Wonderfulworldofdee I totally get where you're coming from but why wouldn't you get a bag that doesn't have a brand? I'm pretty sure that you can get amazing bags for the same prices that don't really have a brand name attached to them. I personally think you shouldn't buy somethings because it's a certain brand you should buy it because it compliments your aesthetic. But again it's your choice 😊
+Bulut Senyaprak I agree, I bought a bucket bag from Zara for 55 and it's the same shape just a different color! I don't like the thought of dupes or fakes.
I AM GIVING YOU A STANDING OVATION. I almost am in tears because I can totally feel the joy in your videos for sewing and putting up content. I hope you get many more views subscribers etc etc.
Scotch tape on the bottom of the sewing foot or a plastic foot will help the leather move on the machine more easily. Also, they sell leather needles for sewing machines. When hand sewing, holes are pre-punched into the leather and a heavier thread is used sometimes. I hope this makes your next leather much easier! With all that leather left you should definitely invest in those leather tools.
Wanted so badly to get this finished for you all, hope you enjoy!! Back when I made this the original bag was sold out, and it's still sold out months later! How can this be.
Love this tutorial! I should probably stop lusting over the real one and just DIY it myself. It would definitely save me some money and the hassle of waiting for restocking.
Nice job! I remember about ten years ago I contemplated making a leather bag and did some research. There was an awl technique where you pre-punched holes so when it was time to sew, the needle went through much easier.
Loved your vid and your channel is just great. Thank you for your generosity. I bought a portable vintage 1940’s electric singer 201k machine from a guy who’d used it to sew sails. It can sew stiff leather and also fine silks .... yes I’ll be making this bag. I have some basic leatherwork tools and will make the drawstring a heavy cord rather than a strap. I’ve valued the leather tips here from other sewers. Cheers.
I have always wanted to make a bucket bag out of leather. But just like you said I did not know what types of sewing equipment I would need. So, I crocheted a bucket bag with a liner and the liner had a pocket in it. I would crochet the bag and cut out a pattern for the liner stitch the liner together by machine and then place the liner inside the bucket bag and go around using the machine. once I got really good at it I could make 2 bucket bags in a day and that's including strap drawstring everything. and it's fun
Really love this bag! Going to have to try and cut out some time to do this! Professional and easy to understand as usual... your videos are getting better every time - keep up the good work Wendy, we appreciate your work very much! x
wow perfect! i wanted one of these bags for so long and they are so expensive..thank you so much for the tutorial..i will try doing this with a thick felt
using teflon foot can help and the right needle.. threadle machine can handle the leather material havent tried on portables.. but you did a great bag there.. and you can make purses wallets on the remaining leathers that you have.. keep posting inspiring 😚😚😚
the bag came out very beautiful. awesome job. I know the struggle of hand sewing and bleeding fingers 😣😕 but I was thinking the same with using leather needles or upholstery needles to make piercing thru easier.
+donna patterson Yes needles that are made for leather will help you out tremendously, they have a diamond shaped point. The ones I use are by a company called Dritz "Glovers / Leather". Also using pliers to pull the needle will save your fingers.
Since my last comment on October 31 I haven't seen anyone else post on this Mansur Gavriel style bucket bag but yours and I did not know too much about this bag until I saw your video on it. Like i said professionals and gorgeous work even by hand. Thanks for this tutorial. This is a must do project as soon as I gather the materials. :-)
Ms. Wendy......great job! I have been studying bags as well since the ladies in the house have been asking for bucket bags. I have been making them different bags, but yes I can see the rage starting again over bucket bags. I plan on including some special trip to my 'Wendy' bag soon. Oh BTW, I hand stitch all of my leather items. There are some tricks to avoid most if not all of the pain and accident stabbings. I wish you continued success with your TH-cam channel and blog!
If you purchase a leather needle, it will make sewing easier. (you can also do some sample sewing on some scrap leather). Lorenso Vasquez and I had the same thought! Or if that didn't work for you, you can also make holes in the leather with an awl and sew it up with a coated bees wax thread, heavier than regular sewing threads. Hope that helps! Your sew is great and creative. It is fantastic of you to share with everyone to. Awesome!
I am so glad that you didn't sew the bag with sewing machine, because for a while I was sewing fake leather with a most basic sewing machine and I almost killed it :D but hey, we all learn from our mistakes. and finally I found great diy channel, because I am a textile design student and I cringe when I see all that hot glue no sew stuff keep going babe!!
Oh my gosh the struggle is real. I can already see your struggling to cut the leather so sewing it by hand must have been brutal! The tutorial is lovely, so high five for pulling through!
Omg the bag is so professional looking i would've never thought you sew the bag by hand. I understand how to make a bucket bag now your tutorial helped. One question what type needle did you used to hand sew the bag? Thanks
It is really nice, I mean I am just stunned with ur creativity. I request u to plz make a video for diy sling bags. I really love them also I like creating things myself. This video really inspired me to create something new. Thank-you. Plz remember my sling bag request.
You have to try old polish sewing machines! (they're called Łucznik). They do leather pretty well :) Even tho , they are made for home sewing. The manufacturer was making weapons also, that's why Łucznik's are whole metal (inside to!), ive tries trough foru (sic.!) layers of leather fabric and my poor old Łucznik have made it! :)
I found a little less than a yard of gray pleather vinyl in the fabric remnants section (always 50% off!) and it was gooorgeous. I couldn't think of what to make with it, and my boyfriend and sister told me that I shouldn't buy it but I reluctantly agreed because I had no clue what to make. I really wish I had guarded that gray vinyl with my heart and soul because of this tutorial :'(
My aunt makes bags from rubber and bike wheels, she had to buy an industrial sewing machine because it was so hard to make it on her regular sewing machine. She luckily promised to let me use it some time
To make the sowing easier you can take a thumb nail (the long one; forgot what it is called) and hammer in the holes before hand. This is what I see the professional leather craftsmen do without a machine.
Looks beautiful and professional! Did you use leather or leatherette? And why did you not use grommets? Was that the style or did you not have the supplies?
I am on a project (also using leather) and the design I have made uses 4 main pieces meaning that I would have a line cutting over the zipper. The bag is designed so it would "droop" (i guess) between each beginning of the strap creating a U shape. I would like the bag to have some sort of embellishment a bit like a signature (not a name), but I don't want it to effect the shape of the bag or be anything that crosses over the joints of the leather. I was thinking of a small embroidery but that might not be a good idea on leather. Any suggestions? The bag is also grey.
Do you think it would be possible to make the same bag with patterned PVC table topper material? I was so inspired and I'm not sure to go the distance or not.
this is probably the best diy channel I have found and I am so HAPPY!!!!
Same here!

buy it on aliexpress, they're amazing quality fakes for like 60 - 80 dollars
+Wonderfulworldofdee yeah but they are fake :/ go for it if you are ok with it but I personally don't agree with it
well honey when you're a struggling student it's not about agreeing or not it's about can I afford it or not:P later on in life when I'm ballin' I'll buy the real deal

loved it :)
Will using a leather needle on the machine make things easier?
You are so talented :) Love all your work

Do you think this pattern would work with thick fabric along with stiff fusible fabric?
Love this tutorial! I should probably stop lusting over the real one and just DIY it myself. It would definitely save me some money and the hassle of waiting for restocking.

You're incredible!! It's hard to believe this was your first time with leather, I would've been so nervous about wasting material.
Missed your videos! Hats down to you for sewing this by hand! LOVED the result!
+ATheJournalist I missed posting!! So excited to finally get more videos out for you :)

I am so, so doing this. thank you for explaining it so well.
Thank You!!!!
very inspiring and besides that ... your tutorial is very well taken care of ,, stylish and upbeat!!! a good begin of the week!! XXH.
A clear vinyl version would be cool
Looks good. I suggest a leather specific sewing needle. It's shaped more spear like the slice through the leather. Mo breaking needles.
Lovely video!!! Much respect for your eloquence in communicating your experience, and your attention to detail!! :)
You're the best DIY-er I've found on youtube
This looks absolutely amazinggggg I would pay you to make this bag for me your craftsmanship is on pointee!! You did a great job!!!
My genius, you made it again.

Thank you so so much for the tutorial! I just finished making my all by hand cause I don't have a sewing machine. Worth it though.
good job...The bag is very beautiful.
You're strong. I've had to hand sew faux leather and it was brutal so i can imagine
I love all your videos. Would love to see a tutorial on sewing a blazer.
Just got my bad ass Sale Rite sewing machine. Off to try this.
I have a Mansure Gavriel bag, and I want yours😭 it’s so much prettier and raw looking
Wow that's some determination and talent right here!!! Great job and keep going! ^_^
Omg the bag is so professional looking i would've never thought you sew the bag by hand. I understand how to make a bucket bag now your tutorial helped. One question what type needle did you used to hand sew the bag? Thanks

make a structured top or midi skirt with the excess leather! It would look amazing especially in that colour :)
My aunt makes bags from rubber and bike wheels, she had to buy an industrial sewing machine because it was so hard to make it on her regular sewing machine. She luckily promised to let me use it some time
beautifulتحفه
بس القماش نوعه ايه؟؟؟
Justo lo que estaba buscando, eres mi salvación Wendy :)
Very cool!! Do you think it's possible to add a lining to this? How would you do that?
Beautiful. Thank you.
Great job.
time is not money, time is LIFE.
I'm so gonna try and make this
Wow its too much good
love this bag! great job ;)
To make the sowing easier you can take a thumb nail (the long one; forgot what it is called) and hammer in the holes before hand. This is what I see the professional leather craftsmen do without a machine.
beauty and inspire 👏👍
As so as I heard snakehips I was sold
I wonder if you could use a thumb tack, or a hammer and small nail to pre-punch the holes prior to sewing?
This costs 30€ but the way it looks so easy, thank you♡
Amazing!
You are amazing!
You should check out Grey Button based out of Atlanta. A husband and wife team that does beautiful work. Nice bag.
I think I am in love with your channel 0.o
