The holes in the stone may have served as a structural element. I think it was a locking mechanism, a construction technique used to grip the stones to avoid unwanted movement.
Omg that’s so exciting!!! The best advice I could give you is probably just talk to people, it’s always way more fun when you’re experiencing something with someone else, and keep in mind that most people are nice (you just have to be nice first!) I actually haven’t met anyone so far that’s been straight up rude or mean so go for it!! Hope you have fun :)
I think about that a lot too given Japan’s past…. But honestly the more I travel the more I realise that everyone just wants peace and travelling actually changes your perspective!! So I would say don’t feel like you’re not welcomed, the media and government’s portrayal of something is in most cases quite different from reality so give it a go!!
