Conquest is pretty fucking special. I can't say the same for Kings of War. Conquest has something pretty cool going on with it. It feels like rank and file, but plays like a skirmish. It's really fucking good.
Peter and I invariably have a blast whenever we manage to fit a game in, although it may be a long time before the next C:LAK report, as the system's a bit too clunky and demanding for Peter's tastes and time restraints. *Definitely* nothing to do with his inability to roll low when he needs to ;) (fun fact about the garden; as well as being gaming buddies, I actually garden for Peter also)
Thanks for the video. I've had 3 games with the Spires and have been wiped every time. This video has given me some excellent ideas. Love your AOS content too!
The Spires are definitely one of the trickier / more synergistic armies in C:LAK; hopefully you start getting the hang of their combos and activation orders before any further losses can demoralize you!
Nice armies and good game! Three thing though: 1) Clash >4 does mean that you hit on 4 or less and reroll 6s. 5s are still no hits. 2) The Abomination has Flurry and therefore could have rerolled its attack dice. 3) The Ugr have Oblivious and therefore only loose 1 wound for each 2 failed resolve checks.
@@EsotericOrderGamers no more than old WFB just you had a book for your army to help. I know you printed off a list with the special rules but I much prefer a book to read, helps it all sink in
As far as I'm aware, you don't reroll 6s @35:50 (otherwise there'd be no point in rolling) Unsure of the rules version you guys were playing as I'm only new, but I believe the new rules state anything higher than a 4 in the stat remains 4 but you get to reroll 5s or something like that So a Nat 6 is still always a miss (just as a Nat 1 is always a hit)
You guys do great batreps and I love the energy and banter. Something else which might change battle outcome: terrain! You guys are playing on an extremely barren board. This means that both armies simply run at each other, and whoever hits first will have the upper hand. If you get proper terrain on the board, it will significantly change the positioning, tactics and start to bring in flank charges, blocked charges and things like that. See discord for some recommendations regarding terrain rules.
Well, we originally did have more terrain for Conquest, but we found it a bit difficult to deal with in a rank-and-flank game like this. You really need just a few large pieces like that tower base I guess. PS Finding information on a discord channel is very difficult! :)
@@EsotericOrderGamers as a Spires player facing Nords all the time. This is sadly kind of normal. Huskarls and Bow Chosen will turn things around A LOT!
Oh dear - that was hard to watch. I think Peter could have called it even sooner. There's no fun in trashing your opponent like that. Thanks for posting this!
Great battle report, looks the dice god was not with you. I like the game but it seems like there is a lot to remember. You both had awesome painted armies.
He suckered you in to the failed charge bringing you within his own charge range. I can't think of another game where you could pull this manoeuvre off because it involves charging a unit with no direct LOS and charging through his own unit to hit yours. A really clever and effective move within the structure of the game rules. I liked the moveable scatter terrain, very useful in marking the changing deployment lines. Fun to watch but at the same time it's a pity it was so one sided. It would have been nice to see what the Nord could do.
Actually the Vanguard Clones making that charge was illegal. A regiment needs to have line of sight on its target in order to charge and the friendly regiment in front of it would have blocked LoS.
@@pauldavies9138 Actually he couldn't have marched > charged there either. If you look at the board state at that time there was no way for the VCs to march to a position where they could make a legal charge due to the terrain and regiment on either side of them. Also, they can't march forward to position themselves between the trolls and the friendly regiment since a regiment cannot come within 1" of an enemy regiment during a march action.
I have to say, it felt pretty dirty to be dishing that out on Peter. It would have been an entirely different story against some of the games more heavily armoured units - Spires generally don't have much access to cleave, so weight of dice is one way to overcome that lack, but even I was taken aback at how quickly those trolls melted!
I think they played it wrong. Page 50 of the 1.5 rulebook: you cannot buff clash to a value higher than 4. In the event that you would reach clash 5+ via a buff you instead reroll natural 6s (critical misses) from the clash action.
@@binkymoon5238 Yup, exactly. I was watching it thinking "there's no way this is right". Also pretty sure characters don't clash at the same time as regiments - they do it as part of their own action.
They could - however, it's a draw event, so happens at the beginning of their turn. If my Spire unit hadn't been so over-buffed, or hadn't rolled so well, the Trolls may have lived to be significantly regenerated on their next activation. Their being wiped out in one activation took *both* Peter and I by surprise!
Even though it was a beating... take it as a learning experience, cause some rules flubbed (according to other comments) Don't be discouraged..just need to tweak the Nords and give them a big talking too 😁.
Thanks for the battle report. Will say, after watching your other battle reports I had absolutely no interest in playing this game. This one has done nothing to change that.

feels like they need to figure out the balance - there should never be auto hits - the 5 reroll 6's should never be in a system
