Ranger Rick is a former US ARMY Ranger. He sustained some injuries which I believe caused his early retirement. Don't quote me on that, but I think buying his no nonsense gear is a great way to get what you need and support Rick. Good demo of the kit. Make a bow saw for cutting with the wire saw. Don't cut too fast, heat build up will cause the majority of these saws to break. I was a USAF Pilot and the ones we were issued would do that. I used the British SAS model wire saw and it worked well. We would carry our condom canteen in a wool sock or place it inside our helmets to protect it. A ball cap might also work. Keep your fishing hooks small, you CAN catch a big fish on a small hook, but not a small fish on a big hook. Don't forget your space blanket...travel light, freeze at night. Have fun guys.
you can put the condom in a sock. great for emergency water carrying situation and if i remember correctly you can carry more because the sock supports it well.
I'm loving this little kit! I want one in my car and maybe a bunch for Christmas presents! Thinking of my grandson, too, 18 and probably will start going on adventures....I can stress to him the importance of being prepared. Thanks for the video!
I had the same Ridge Runner mini knife and the safety mechanism became worn and I tried to salvage the blade but its made so well that I couldn't break the plastic body.
Outdoor Products has a set of small dry bags that work to hold water pretty well. The old principle of if it will keep water out it will hold water in. And when folded and locked you've got a handle.
I made my own little fishing kit once out of boredome, used a circular foam earplug condainer, (little bigger than what in this video) and used sllot of the same stuff in mine even the eyelits lol. I even managed to reuse the earplugs as little bobbers for fishing in still ponds and such. a tad sensitive but effective enough. still have it just in case whenever i go camping lol
with the braided chord if you pray the whole thing in arisol glue it makes a great baton type weapon and with a little effort can still be unbraided to use the chord
These little hand saws are also quite useful for cutting femurs (to get to the very nutritious bone marrow). If you are ever in a survival situation you can cook the whole bone on the fire and saw it into slices and eat the contents. Or you can only saw off one end and then grind the bone against a abrasive rock to a point. Makes a good makeshift spear tip (for long spear or traps).
Those eyelet screws are the best idea, Im getting some for my bob Multi use, nice Maybe some cheese cloth? I need to get some inner tub rubber, they seem to work good
Nice video, for those who critique you and this kit, they need to first familiarize themselves with retired Army Ranger Rick Tscherne's website and his well known series of books. They need to realize that the purpose of Rick's design is to have a kit that is always carried so one has it when they'll need it. Rick isn't out to sell crap, but to teach and share useful information. He also provides survival kits to active duty military personel.
i think the condom is not necessary plastic bags are more easier to find and carry without having to worry that it will break easily and if other people see it they won't raise an eye brow at you.
You're supposed to put the condom in a sock to give it more strength when full, I'm not sold on this idea and have got two nylon sponge bags (I don't know if sponge bags are a UK/Ireland thing) and they work like small dry bags but are double layered to keep moisture inside so will fit a litre of water in easily and the draw strings mean they can be hung up for the morning, they cost £1 here so they don't break the bank either.
I really like the little camping tool - that orange combination gizmo with a compass, a mirror, a lanyard, match holder and whistle. Too bad the compass is useless; I only post here thinking maybe someone reading will fashion one with a good compass. Go to the store and pick up three and all will point a different direction.
krangite bacon True. You're more likely to smash your hand than you are if you open it, though. I prefer knives that hold their lock so you can trust them.
@bbelikove sure you could, but he has some really neat ideas. That I would just end up using in the kit I built anyway. He has to have a profit margin for putting it all together, but i dont think his prices are unreasonable for what you get.
I made one of these kits out of things i purchased and it cost more but its a great idea. The knife i use is a gerber curve, fox mini whistle, cheap girly dollar store keychain mirror that I put camo tape on and a 2 dollar pill bottle aluminum (dollar store)
@phantomcharger Unless you have more than one use for the cheesecloth Id skip it. a=A bandana or even some 4x4 guaze would work. for free innertube, just go to your local bike shop and ask for a puctured tube, they keep them in a box to recycle them later
The point of these kits isn't really about making money, but rather to fund Ranger Rick's efforts to provide survival kits to active duty US Military personnel because despite what many might think, they are not issued such gear. Also for those of you who are being critical, the website offers loads of great survival tips and projects and information on how to create better and more comprehensive kits for those of us who desire to carry more gear. he has written a series of books on survival.
One comment on your flashlight only (02:02) The 10 mm ("jumbo" lens), 8 mm, 5 mm (standard lens) and 3 mm LEDs have the same chip inside with the same luminous intensity. In simply words, at the same power (the current × voltage) the whole amount of light is greater with some reflector around but NOT the diameter of lens. Of course, you can use the lighter with a LED with stronger chip but it will last for shorter or have heavier battery.
The water tabs said Wexford, Irlanda. That is county Wexford, Ireland Strange it is not in English though. Cool kit idea, all on keychains, gotta look into them
@bbelikove I'm not a fan of Ranger Rick but: But I have used this kit and the kit's reasonable for the price. The light's pretty decent, as the magbar. Compass works but won't a lot of abuse, your better off with the liquid filled version. Saw works. Knife is mediocure. (Buy yourself a SAK) The whistle works. Best thing to do with he hollow compartment on the whistle is to put some cotton wool thats's been coated in petrolium jelly in the compartment. You could do worse.
@beast12101 You got it right. It is for a small piece of paper that you would write any allergies and personal information. In case you are found deceased or unconscious...
For cheez btw if youve never got a lighter wet you have to wait for it to dry b4 it will light again and if its raining you will never light your lighter
A Ferrocerium Fire Steel Rod costs 3$ +1$ shipping on Ebay, why would you bother with the lighter gizmo? you could do anything with the fire steel blank.
Your kits look good but what i got from this video was the knifes safety feature fails imagine using that knife and it closes on your finger and you need stitches
@beast12101 sorry to be so blunt, but i get asked so many questions that would take 2 seconds to google or just click the link, its starts to get to me.
The knife on the key ring is a no go. What happens is it's too much hassle to take it off for entering government buildings etc. We all tend to forget about having it on the key ring and then have to get out of the long line that we waited in for several hours to walk back to the car to put the knife away and lose our place. I have even tried to hide the knife while progressing in the line, like in a garbage can or other. Some a-hole will steal it if s/he sees you hide it, especially if it's a nicer multi function knife like a Leather-man. The knife goes in the glove box. The size of the knife is also questionable because different locations have different rules. Some lengths are considered a weapon. Thinking in terms of the car opens up greater possibilities. I always carry full set of sockets, saws, drills and general tools in the trunk as I often run into some mechanical situation. I think this is being more practical as the key ring is generally ok for simple handy task that are no greater than having to walk back to the car. Otherwise if it where any more tactical, for example a governmental overthrow where we where taken to Fema camps or some similar militant situation, more likely we would be stripped of all we possess. What would be more interesting is to know steps that one could take if they where stripped bare naked and then the steps they would take to make their way while remaining totally hidden as though a war refugee. But please no nudity. Underwear would suffice. Because if we where running from law/military there are hundreds of questions/thoughts I have about survival in that situation. Some example questions off the top of my head: How does one avoid helicopter heat detection? How does one avoid ticks when sleeping? How can clothes be made from plants? How does one make first shelter? Where is a good location in woods? (Near water?) Should we dig a fox hole or hide in tree? (Think Helicopters and bears). When considering all this, I think that the car is a great solution. Then the questions become: How do we hide the car? Should we bury the car and use it for shelter? (this I like) How could we bury a car quickly? Could we cover the car with debris alone? Should we use a ditch? (A come-along to pull the car in/out) So as you can see it is clearly an advantage to set the car up as the "bug out bag". Then all one has to do is grab the keys and go. Either that or set something up ahead of time. Something in running distance. That is if one really believes in SHTF...
this is an extremely low budget, minimal, LIGHTWEIGHT survival kit that would even be a great backup kit sealed in a small watertight float bag in case you lost all of your other gear. you're missing the point. this is a great kit.
@remixnick You'd still have a couple of seconds before the fire reached your fingers, and in a survival situation burning your fingers is worth it in order to get a fire.
at 07:00 the text is french, it says: "Add one tablet to 1 liter clear water. Let it work for 30 minutes. Each tablet contains 8.5 milligrams sodium dichloro isocyanurate" etc It also says its from Ireland and " DO NOT SWALLOW THE TABLETS"
@ayellerbird When I posted that comment I had first started my intrest in survival kits and knives so I thought you needed a huge bag full of food and fixed blades. well to sum it up I didn't knw much of anything
I used to buy all his Ranger Digest little magazine at the uniform shop during my Army days.

I'd say the saw worked good too. Thanks for reviewing everything and putting the link in description.
I am so glad that you actually field tested it! Thanks for the review.

@USARMYRANGERRICK One thing that I might suggest is a hard plastic whistle because for winter survival the metal whistle can be a bad Idea.
@zorkadoo not only is there the carrying water thing but you can use it to make a sling shot. If it looks stupid and it works then it isn't stupid.
Those eyelet screws are the best idea, Im getting some for my bob
Multi use, nice
Maybe some cheese cloth?
I need to get some inner tub rubber, they seem to work good
I think the red whistle compartment is intended for matches, hence the o-ring to keep them dry.

@mrbobie93 its a magnesium bar with a ferrocium rod embedded

Nice job on the vid. I really like seeing all these kits that are coming out. I see more and more of them in the sports stores.
@zorkadoo for water carry, you can use others things but alot of people find condoms a sturdy vessel for carrying water to purify
Also can be used a an improvised surgical glove as they are sealed and sterile.
fishing kit, matches, and sewing kit will fit in the whistle

The problem with striking from the knife is that it may not stay open when you do, and if you use the blade rather than the back, youll ruin the edge.
you dont have to unfold the knife in order to strike, if you keep it closed and let it sit in your palm you can still make some good sparks.

The inside of the medical labeled whistle is made for medicine storage.
Great video very detailed on each item and enjoyed the demonstrations.

Great review as we have come to expect ! Seems like good stuff. Thanks. Bye the way how are the ticks up in the northwest ?
@beast12101 You could snap the matches in half to make them fit in the whistle compartment.
Love the way you film.
I'd say that little compartment would be useful for storing buttoncell batteries
Nice demo on the gear. Thanks!
wow great review!
all of my questions were answered and you spoke very clearly.
thank you
U should put strike anywhere matches in the whistle

could you show the saw on something that i wouldnt just break with my hands or bending with my foot? like 4 inches or so?
This helped alot and I made the bic striker and it works very well and I am getting the stuff to make everyone in my family the kit
So, you're saying I can check his website out?
The water tabs said Wexford, Irlanda.
That is county Wexford, Ireland
Strange it is not in English though.
Cool kit idea, all on keychains, gotta look into them
Excellent Review Beast ! A long video for you...LOL !! :)
I have been tossing around the idea of buying one of these kits myself.
cool kit but were is it on his website like because I cant find it on his website!?
@bbelikove

Where can you see, how to make the lighter out of bic?
i been to ranger ricks website years ago, the kit is a good idea tho i was always a fan of making your own.
@beast12101 You got it right. It is for a small piece of paper that you would write any allergies and personal information. In case you are found deceased or unconscious...
Very good review and advice. Thx!
A cheque (or check in American English) is a document that orders a payment of money from a bank account.
An essential item for a survival kit is here is the Aussie Survival Tool it actually works!
For cheez btw if youve never got a lighter wet you have to wait for it to dry b4 it will light again and if its raining you will never light your lighter
Unusually long video for you. I liked it!
hello where i can find that handsaw for cut the tree ?
you had some failures with the latex huh? what are their names?
that avocado mesh can make a good fishing net.
Is the log included in the kit?
the space in whistler is for striker matches (;
couldent u use the whistel compartment for meds
To: Wandering Beast - Thumbs up. Cool Budget kit. Thanks for posting this review.
whats a cheque
@kevin22212 its for the piece of first aid info it came wrapped in
A Ferrocerium Fire Steel Rod costs 3$ +1$ shipping on Ebay, why would you bother with the lighter gizmo? you could do anything with the fire steel blank.

@beast12101 i did look at the link there was no price
which camera did u use?
The language on the Aquatabs is french..
thanks for the good review cool stuff
Very nice review! Ranger Rick has a great site.
What is that your using on 10:31 ?
Your kits look good but what i got from this video was the knifes safety feature fails imagine using that knife and it closes on your finger and you need stitches
I think you need to blow up the condom first to stretch it out, you could then use a sock to secure it so it doesn't break. Great review!
How do you make the sparker thing?
@beast12101 sorry to be so blunt, but i get asked so many questions that would take 2 seconds to google or just click the link, its starts to get to me.

RJSoftware2000 Wow, do you live a sad existence. You sound very, very scared.
James Ritchie ok, have a nice day.
@jocelynn2007 I think it just said remove first
this is an extremely low budget, minimal, LIGHTWEIGHT survival kit that would even be a great backup kit sealed in a small watertight float bag in case you lost all of your other gear. you're missing the point. this is a great kit.
Where did u get it off of
you can use a small cut of coffee filter inside the condom to clarify the water before using the purifying tablets.
Check out All-Weather Firestarters
Just like MacGiver amazing what you can do with just basic things
ranger rick was my fav magazine when i was a kiddo
No raccoon here.
I have no idea if this has been covered but in RANGER/survival school they tought to put the condom in a GI issue sock
how muchs was that keyring survivalkit
great video ,thanks for sharing.
