I switched from thunder (which I always loved) for many years to venture because of my frustration with the kingpin clearance of the thunders and the baseplate clearance. I hated that my wheels drug and stopped me so much on The thunders with the short baseplate. Venture cured that while keeping a similar height and pinch for crooks, but didn’t quite turn as well. I was always interested in slappys but never gave them a shot because of the height of them. Once they dropped the lows I instantly had to cop a set! I love them! Took no time at all to break them in. They have kingpin clearance, baseplate clearance, the perfect height, and as a bonus they turn as good as or better than Indy’s! With the second bonus of almost no wheel bite! 😍 I also have to ride a fairly mellow 8.25 deck with a 14” wheelbase. Primitive has been my go too, and I’ve fell in love with the primitive twin nose as well. I like spitfire 53mm 93a soft slider the best but id happily take xformula 97a wheels as well. (They feel about the same. Spitfire 93a does not feel as soft as dragon 93a. I couldn’t stand the 93a dragons because they stick on ledges and rails when doing smith grinds and crooks. 93a spitfires and x97 bones don’t stick and feel very similar to me.) and for bearings I’ve had the best luck longevity wise with bones Swiss. I’ve ridden reds, Bronson g3, Bronson raws and plenty of other brands of bearing and break them like crazy! Don’t know why cuz I only weigh 160lb, but Bronson raw is my second choice lasting me about 4 months. Been on bones Swiss for close to a year now and they’re still going strong! Plus they only cost $5 more than Bronson raws. (No brainer) I am interested in trying the rat dragons 97a though. Maybe on my next set of wheels. I went through so much board madness to figure this set up out lol😅😂
i ride independent 169s titaniums. i tried a lot of different trucks i always end up going back to indy. they stopped making san diegos a long time ago i liked those too. the wider trucks make skating bowls and transition easier and here in Philadelphia thats a must if your planning on going to FDR. for wheels i like 56mm-60mm 93a-97a . my favorite is 60mm 95a k9s but they can be hard to find. big wheels because i hate stop rocks and i like to go further with less effort. small wheels feel like im rolling in mud. currently im i have 56mm 99a x formulas and 58mm dragons that i switch between. there is nothing but rough streets here. the last reason i use rails is becaquse of the graphic. i carry my board all the time i live in a big city and i take subways etc... i do a lot of rail slides and airs so i need to grab the board also risers because of the big wheels and i feel like they make me faster right now thats 5 ply real wood risers. i like coffin shaped decks right now im on a new deal Siamese its 9.5 coffin shaped. thats whats comfortable to me and i dont like having the same thing i think thats lame to be like everybody else. this is only half of what i wanted to write
I went through the madness. Glad I did. Got to experiment with all types of set ups. I use to ride a 7.75 and I'm six feet tall! What the hell was I thinking? 🤔 Now I'd say my sweet spot is an 8.5 popsicle, ventures, Bronson's raw, and I'm currently rocking the nano rats and digging them. 👍
I’ve gone the fine tuning rabbit hole. Slappy hollow rear truck. Carver CX surfskate front truck. Krooked Beamer deck. Spitfire 60mm radial fulls. G-bomb built in bearings. This setup is too fun. I think when you’re young it’s easy to jump on any board and just start hucking. Going for it. Learning to tricks. You get older and the madness and learning and fine tuning becomes interesting as tricks get harder to learn. I find it fun to figure out how to dial in my setup to make tricks feel the way I want them to feel The Surfskate front truck is so fun for me though. It’s like having bike pedals. Being able to generate more speed easily without pushing. Tighter more responsive turn. I’ve heard a bunch of “ride Ace’s” “get Indy Stage 4’s” “get slappy’s” I’ve tried em all and I’ve got a fun setup that’s doing what I want it to do
I like the Slappy's, but I am an ACE guy. I like the angle of the hanger for nose slides. They provides good baseplate contact. For boards I need to like flayer boards like the flight decks. My best skating is on flight decks and twin tails, but that is because they are flatter. I wish Powell would make a Twin flight deck. Wheels I like the X99. They are perfect for my park. Saying all that. My slappy board has slappy trucks on it and is 9.8 in width. I do have the Anderson wheels on that. For the bowl I like bigger wheels 60 to 64mm . I have different boards for different sessions. I have a bit of a board addiction. It is a problem.
@@stickersteve007 I tried all the Anderson's. The wheelbase wasn't good for me. I wanted to love it, but it got given away pretty quickly. It went to a good home and God destroyed for over 9 months.

Whenever I make a change, it is mostly with functional intent. I've been riding nothing but egg shaped boards for about 7 years now (well before the hype started). I skate all terrain and I wanted a single board set-up to rule them all. I've settled on a 9.5 egg because it carves and grinds like a big wide board but pops and flips more like an 8.75 board. Wood shop is important also and I only ride BBS or Pennswood pressed boards. I switched to Slappy trucks recently because the advertised kingpin clearance and reduced wheel bite was attractive to me. I switched to Dragon wheels last year because of the versatility and I read that they are more forgiving for the older skater. I skate with rails because I do a lot of board slides and I find them easier with rails. Current set-up is a Black Label 9.5 egg (BBS), Slappy 9" hollows, 53mm Dragons, G3 bearings, Lil Jawns rails. Still undecided on the Slappy's; not sure if I prefer them over my old Ace's but wheel bite is definitely better.
Right on! The tapered kicks just throw off all my flip tricks. Eggs are cool though. Just not for me. I really liked the razor edge on all the heroin boards though
i keep a 3 set quiver nowadays. grew up on the small pops & 52mms. Daily Driver: 9.5-9.8 for my size 15(US) shoe, Indy 169s or Ace 66s(9.3in) to match the size and not too wide for coping (i wanna try Slappy or AF1s next) 1/4risers for more turn/less bite, 57-58mm/99a wheels cuz they handle better in Midwest crust and cuz i'm heavier but still love speed, Oust bearings (formally Tensor) cuz they're just a good sleeper brand, but any Bones are fine. No more G3s for me 😅I used to rly like the Swiss Labyrinth IIs 😏 Big Boi Bomber: 10in Lucero/Punk Point cuz it's big sturdy n looks rad cutting thru the wind 💨💨, 215s for stability at higher speeds, 1/2-3/8in risers for harder turns, 60mm-66mm/99a cuz they're big & wide and grip, but still slip👌🏽 Cruiser: A thinner board for me usually. Lately i figured out that all the curb eggs werk better as cruisers for me; kinda like a bigger polarizer setup. It's obnoxious tho: 9.0 egg cuz i get less wheelbite when i turn, and i can comfortably control the board from the middle (cruiser stance😉) or w/ my feet together. 169s, but feel i could go 159s. I don't want the trucks too big cuz that can hinder the turn, whereas i want maximum turn👉🏽Combined, my risers are either 5/8 or 7/8 👀 becuz i can't let the big juicy 75mm Thunderjuice touch my board when i turn, or i'm flying off (even w/ the wheelbite wax hack, there isn't much mercy).🍊 All of my setups have Indy 92a bushings, the Cruiser has the conicals for surfier turning. I use 92a becuz i got tired of cranking down the regular orange Indy 90a and smushing them into bits. I had to crank them down to get the turn i wanted over & over until my kingpin would stretch & snap. So i put them on every new pair of trucks, even tho they don't fit the Aces so good 😖 My grip can be smattered about any kinda way, idc 🤣
I literally just found my setup that works! I wrote the specs and brands down immediately. And after that, I look forward to skating again! It’s a good feeling.
As of right now, I’m skating my old board from 1998 because it’s what I already had. World Industries Battle slick. Krux trucks. I can only assume the wheels were originally 54mm as they’re 48mm now. And prob Jessup griptape. Oh, and Quickies bearings from Shorties I’m in the process of building a new deck. No clue on my deck since it hasn’t shipped in 3wks so may cancel and will prob get something else. Krux DLK5 trucks. PP 54mm dragons. Dragon bearings. MOB griptape (since that’s all my LSS had). I’d like to get a twin tip deck for longevity
Regarding the why of everything. From watching a bunch of different videos it’s helped me understand why I use what I used. For wheels I like 54 mm because it gives me just the right amount of contact patch to push around on and then I won’t need risers For the trucks that I have. For durometer I found I like 97 a because it’s the perfect balance that I can push around on the cruddy surface around my house and then if I get to smooth Skatepark, I don’t have to change out wheels. For trucks I like venture 6.1 high because It’s stable and I can put 54 or even 56 mm wheels and not worry. I guess I push around and cruise more than I do tricks. Getting old sucks.
Still on a santacruz winkouski , 9" indys w 60 mm soft slimeballs. Have other set ups but always go back to that cruzerish ride. Mostly because im old and don't do flip tricks anymore 🙃

I skate an 8.5 with ace 55 classics. I like ace because it’s a good mix btw Indy and thunders. Height of thunders but skate more like an Indy. Also prefer having a 9 inch truck with an 8.5 to have max amount of stability and truck space for grinds. I try to find boards that have a “full shape” to them like quasi or hockey decks
i run a 8.7 popsicle shop deck with indy hollows, 54m spitfire lockins and bronsons i love having a good all around board i can do flip trick comfortably while also having a good amount of room for slappys and some light transition skating i wear a size 12 mens and the 8.7 is the perfect size for me 9 feels just a bit to big for me personally for tricks like 360 flips just requires alot more effort and a 8.5 feels like im more standing over the board rather than on the board if that makes sense still comfortable but i find really stomping tricks alot easier with the little extra width i ran ventures for a while and liked them alot but found the indys more comfortable overall with time
i like variety. i have 5 setups right now, all a little different. i do like flatter decks, but i also like stiffer decks and they don't usually coincide
@@chrhadden the almost impact decks are/were so good. they have fiber/resin bits but still 7-ply maple. so even the flatter ones were stiffer and stayed stiffer longer

Bro have you tried the Bronson ceramic bearings yet? I’ve gotten both the raws and the ceramics and love them both but I’ve still been mind blown how fast the ceramics are after 4 months.
Do you ever sell the gear you're no longer using? Just getting back into skating at 43. Bought a 7.5 popsicle complete on marketplace and find it's too narrow for me and my knees in my advanced age. Been looking into heroin and other wide shaped decks but nothing in my area I can check out in person before poneying up for brand new complete.
i actually just sold off a bunch of my stuff a couple weeks ago. yeah 7.5 would be hard to skate. i'd suggest 8.5 or bigger if your just getting back into it
I find if it's worth selling, I sell it and reinvest in new parts. Trucks always seem to sell well, wheels and boards can be hit and miss. Btw, a 7.5 popsicle has no place underneath a 43 year old's feet 😂 I whole heartedly advocate for Heroin or, if you prefer not to get what everyone else is getting, you could look at Black Label's range of boards. They do similar shapes to Heroin and they are pressed at the same wood shop. I'm currently riding a Black Label 9.5 egg. I've ridden nothing but Heroin for the last 7+ years but I got kind of bummed with seeing everyone else in the park riding the same brand.
@benj6107 yes I was checking out black label as well. I'm 5'3 so I initially thought a small board would be ideal but it's just too small and unstable. Not a fan of the way it feels. Bought some 93a dragons for it though which is perfect for the rough vermont concrete.
also skating symmetrical decks, I'm on my 4th Powell Anderson Heron 2 Egg and I love it, I want a board that can do it all and this one is the one for me now :) Wished there were more symmetrical Powell flight decks as well.
I've had Bronson Raws for more than 2 years, same set they are the best, roll so long so fast. I like egg shaped boards noses cuz they work really good on nollie tricks for me.
preeeeeeetty much because i have big feet and am tall lol. that's seriously it. growing up skating in the 90s, all setups were really tiny but then i used to watch mostly late 80s/early 90s skate videos and saw they were doing just fine on large setups, so my experience was melancholy because as fun as it was, i felt like i was being held back due to setups and missed out on an era that would have been more suited for me. now i have access to 9.0 popsicles and shaped/old school decks for 9+. 14.5 wb, indys, spitfire classics to keep things consistent; i never really had madness, always knew i was working towards something i wanted. it's always nice to have a few setups to experiment with too.
doesnt it seem like it was so convenient for the industry. just spit the same shape out with different graphics. different brands were the same exact board from the same board makers with different branding.
@@stickersteve007 Eric Ricks and Frankie Hill was the guys I always looked up to in those days and the Powell hot batch and Chaos was really good vibes
😂 I skate 5.25 low tensor, loose front truck and semi right rear,45mm 99a conical wheels, 8" by 14" wheel base board with low tail high nose and "full concave" according to almost, and whatever grip tape I might like the graphic on, I got down to this because my tricks feel much more secure, I can slappy very well, and my crook grinds got better, I still Ollie high and the highest nose stall I can do is almost 3 feet, the only thing I now I struggle is going up ramps, I have to push extra hard 😂 but it's not a deal breaker. I am trying freestyle stuff and so far I can do the tricks ive been practicing, so yeah my set up is the best set up for me
I’m on lurpivs now…like them a lot and next I’m trying the new koston ventures for the wheelbase adjustment and if I don’t like them I’m going to try the slappy low profiles then I’ll be done with truck madness
my smallest board is 8.25. my biggest is 10. depends what I'm skating, I love heroin boards though. wide board with a short wheelbase is surprisingly versatile.
dude i definitely had an "oh shit" moment, but i refrained from buying them and proceeded to drill out my venture baseplates lol. have yet to try em out yet
It does feel like you’re cheating on the Ventures doesn’t it 😂? Currently riding a 9” popsicle with a 14.25” wheel base. 9” because it’s insanely convenient to be able to keep stability and land on. 14.25” because if stuff is too heavy I can’t get it off the ground high enough as my calves and ankles are weak. At the start it did feel a bit short but I’ve gotten used to it. Venture 6.1 V-Hollows because they don’t make them bigger. Hollow because like with the wheel base I need help with the weight to get good lift off. Venture because I feel most stable on them and stability is always an issue for me. 53mm Spitfire F4 Radials 99A. 53mm because that was the size I bought them in and because it’s a good combo of riding surface and height and not weighing too much. 99A because for what surfaces I’m currently riding it works and I like the ease of slide. I don’t really care about which bearings I ride. I’ve ridden all sorts and for what I do it all just feels the same most of the time. Enjoi Little Buddies hardware because I can match the colours to the deck. Griptape I can do whatever as long as it’s not online shop grip of their own brand. That stuff always sucks within a very short period of time getting bald spots and stuff.

i like variety. i have 5 setups right now, all a little different. i do like flatter decks, but i also like stiffer decks and they don't usually coincide
never thought of it that way makes perfect sense though
@@chrhadden the almost impact decks are/were so good. they have fiber/resin bits but still 7-ply maple. so even the flatter ones were stiffer and stayed stiffer longer
Bro have you tried the Bronson ceramic bearings yet? I’ve gotten both the raws and the ceramics and love them both but I’ve still been mind blown how fast the ceramics are after 4 months.
I haven't sprung for them yet. Maybe someday
Intro was hilarious. 🤙🤙
@@GreybeardSkates thanks dude!
Do you ever sell the gear you're no longer using? Just getting back into skating at 43. Bought a 7.5 popsicle complete on marketplace and find it's too narrow for me and my knees in my advanced age. Been looking into heroin and other wide shaped decks but nothing in my area I can check out in person before poneying up for brand new complete.
i actually just sold off a bunch of my stuff a couple weeks ago. yeah 7.5 would be hard to skate. i'd suggest 8.5 or bigger if your just getting back into it
im 50 i dont like popsicles either. i ride a coffin shaped 9.5
@matth268 dragons were a great choice 👌.
also skating symmetrical decks, I'm on my 4th Powell Anderson Heron 2 Egg and I love it, I want a board that can do it all and this one is the one for me now :) Wished there were more symmetrical Powell flight decks as well.
You're not the first guy who has mentioned Powell making more symmetrical decks
I've had Bronson Raws for more than 2 years, same set they are the best, roll so long so fast. I like egg shaped boards noses cuz they work really good on nollie tricks for me.
Right on! For me, the tapered kicks made me miss my flicks a lot. And shuv its always wanted to flip more. Just wasn't comfortable on em.
preeeeeeetty much because i have big feet and am tall lol. that's seriously it. growing up skating in the 90s, all setups were really tiny but then i used to watch mostly late 80s/early 90s skate videos and saw they were doing just fine on large setups, so my experience was melancholy because as fun as it was, i felt like i was being held back due to setups and missed out on an era that would have been more suited for me. now i have access to 9.0 popsicles and shaped/old school decks for 9+.
It's crazy how the different era's change the "norm" of what a setup is
All my setups are like I never moved on from early 92 😂 9.12 football shaped decks with 169 Indy’s with 38mm wheels 😎
@@WayneBarnette I missed that era
@@stickersteve007 it was one of the best times in skateboarding history for sure
@WayneBarnette love watching the videos
@@stickersteve007 Eric Ricks and Frankie Hill was the guys I always looked up to in those days and the Powell hot batch and Chaos was really good vibes
Great video brotha! I almost fell into the heroin board madness too right after I got my board dialed lol
My set up is always a creature 8.6 stumps deck Indy trucks reds and currently wheels madness but usually the 93 nano cubics
@@HunterParkinson-y1z it took me 3 different ones to figure out the eggs weren't for me
That’s what’s it’s about tho too. I have a 9.81 gonz krooked deck that I tried so hard to love and it for me can only be a cruiser lol
@HunterParkinson-y1z yup. Sometimes you just wanna like something, but just doesn't workout. Can't force it
I just buy what my favorite pros use
Not a bad way to go about it. i've done the same thing
I am trying freestyle stuff and so far I can do the tricks ive been practicing, so yeah my set up is the best set up for me
interesting setup. Sounds like you know why you skate what you skate!
@@stickersteve007 yup ! And even though some things might change depending on what I want to achieve but yeah I'm pretty aware of what's on my board
I’m on lurpivs now…like them a lot and next I’m trying the new koston ventures for the wheelbase adjustment and if I don’t like them I’m going to try the slappy low profiles then I’ll be done with truck madness
I wish you luck good sir. I said the same thing lol
Bahahaha you say that now... that's how it starts for all of us... 😂😂
8.25 x 32 high concave
14.1 wheel base
Venture 5.6 v-hollow
56mm bone x formula 97 v6
Bones swiss bearings
Diamonds hardware.
I skate this setup because I skate to skatepark and it also gives me stability
I’m honestly a fan of both Curb skating and Freestyle. But due to me being broke AF, I only have a 9” Welcome deck
Real true mold 31.5x8.25x13.88
Mob
Bronson G3 with spacers
Bones stf v5 side cut
Indy hollow 149 medium hard blues
solid! thanks for sharing. V5 sidecuts are great wheels
did the spacers give you aids yet or you dont care because you cant get it twice?
my smallest board is 8.25. my biggest is 10. depends what I'm skating, I love heroin boards though. wide board with a short wheelbase is surprisingly versatile.
@christibble8991 right on. I am interested in tryin they're symmetrical popsicle. Just not an egg guy. I was just poking fun at Heroin lol
I skate old schools only
nothin wrong with that! if you don't already follow BigDeckEnergy go give him a look. he's sick and skates big decks!
i like the purple
it doesnt give you fomo that you just switched off venture and just now they releas the brand new v8 koston truck with adjustable wheelbases.
dude i definitely had an "oh shit" moment, but i refrained from buying them and proceeded to drill out my venture baseplates lol. have yet to try em out yet
Definitely feels like I'm cheating a little bit lol.
Stinker Steve is knowledgeable about what he knows
🤫
are those clear rails? that's kinda sick
Yes they are. Haven't tried to slide em yet
@@stickersteve007 my gut would say they'd prob be better on metal/coping than concrete
i'm influenced by sales mostly for deck at least
@mulldriftyr I'm picky on my boards, but luckily, the boards I like are on the cheaper side
Dude was that Kenny Curbcuts?!? You should listen to him he knows a lot about curb skating!
Lol That is officially his name! He knows a lot more than I do!
Im 50..my wife hates my skateboard sickness... actually finally over it did ALOT of donations to local skate park.. current ride shapes skateboards beemless beemer indy 215's ricta clouds 56mm 86a nice and comfy cause my body is shot😂have another big popsicle with ace af1's on it and it'll be aces from here on out... don't have to fuck with bushings (185lbs.)😂it has Andy Anderson 52mm 93a on it incan live with those 2 for now...😊cant hide em anymore she finds em..❤
I can relate. I always came up with a nice back story why I "had" to try something new 😆
I skate the most expensive shit the local shop has to offer because I suck and that equipment must make me better 😝
Lol you are 100% correct. Why would it be so expensive if it didn't make you better?
