🐉Personally, I always felt that if a character has a distinct look that everyone can recognize, it should be left untampered with as much as possible and maybe take inspiration from that said character and make something new, but that's just my take on it.
I really hope they don't mess with Astrid's character developement 😭🏳 cause she's definitely one of those rare characters that IS actually a good girl boss (who is not outrightly a bully or Mary Sue) with great growth - from being jealous to understanding at the end of the movie. She is rough and tough, but also gentle and caring. And give us the skulls! She is iconic for the skull motifs and accessories 😢💀☠️
I agree. And her clothes reflect that. Towards the end of the series, blue becomes a dominant color in her clothes and it reflects how she lets her gentle side out more. She's tough but blue is typically associated with calm so it makes sense. But red? Not only would it make her an easier target with how bright it is but I don't think it matches her character 😅 Astrid might not be an inventor but she's not dumb and it'll be harder for others to know if she's hurt or not
3:21 yes, thank you. Someone finally said it. Everyone is always debating whether or not someone can play a character based on their race. Honestly, in my opinion, it’s usually okay as long as they closely resemble the character.
Just cos one is the same race dosn’t mean they look like the character either. Nico chould be 100% white but she’s still a brunette and Astrid is blonde.
@ yeah, as was pointed out in the video, she actually very closely resembles Astrid. If they just made her blonde, which they could easily do (hair color is the easiest thing to change on an actor/actress).
7:55 Exactly, thank you, you took the words right out of my mouth. They aspect us fans to just be okay with something they change just because they want to change it. No, that’s crazy ☝️
🐉Hollywood hates blonds. They have for years. Annabeth from Percy Jackson has had 3 actresses, and one of them was blond! I think they changed the twins to red heads because of what happened to M.J. in the MCU and Ariel in the little mermaid! ( This is a joke btw please don't attack me, Disney!!!) For real, though. You hit the nail on the head. Changing a characters design is something that needs to be done with care. I remember when Dante from Devil may cry, got a redesign, and everybody hated it. Funnily enough, it was primarily because of the hair. Hair is a very important thing, apparently, lol. I think the reason why comic book characters get away with changing the designs so much is because we can still tell who it is at a glance most of the time. Just look at the Spider-Man costumes in the ps4 game for that. Plus, they've been around for a long time, so designs are going to change over the years. Plus, Plus, most of the time, it's just the costumes that change. So it's easier to bear. Sorry for the long read. Have another dragon. 🐲
they also hate redheads. There is an entire chart of redheads who have been swapped to black and a lot of them are known for their original race. I hated that Disney swapped both Ariel and M.J Just keep the characters the way their supposed to look. it shouldn't be hard.
@@Hanako-Kun-t9b wasn't disney i don't think, but Annie (frrom Annie, the musical about the redheaded orphan) also got race swapped to black. idg why filmmakers HATE redheads so much (at least in annie's case pretty much all the characters got swapped to black, so it was a bit more acceptable, kind of like a classic story told through the lens of another culture, which are usually pretty enjoyable. but still... why always the redheads) :(
@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF I think it is because redheads can be very popular characters. Ariel is one of disney's most popular princesses ( I remember reading forums about how disappointed Koreans and Japanese Disney fans were when she got blackwashed.) That "Annie" blackwash movie was a huge failure because it didn't have annie in it. There also Anne of Green Gables which has about seven adaptions (including an anime ) Anna from Frozen is very popular. Jessica Rabbit is popular with adults. Barbara Gordan from Batman is one of the characters that most regular non comic book fans can recongise. Same applies to MaryJane Watson spiderman's love interest.
They hate minorities 😡 (I’m not kidding because only 2% of the population have blonde and red hair and they both have a bad stereotype (blondes are dumb redheads are soulless)
I feel like the director must have though "irish accent = red hair. Or dark hair. Like a leprachaun". The HTTYD cast is made of nords. Anyone who has opened up Skyrim knows that nords are typically blonde. At this point, it could be the equivalent of "white washing", culture wise. You took the typical blond nords and made the red heads. Suffer. Story wise, it is part of what made hiccup stand out. His hair was more red brown, and his fathers hair was literally ginger. In a scene those two stood out, and they looked alike, so it was easy to see the conflicts between them. And hiccup wore green in the first movie, so he stood out from the other Armour wearing vikings (he wore the dark nightfury scales later on too) In the reference picture of hiccup he melts into the background. Hope that doesn't happen in the movie lmao sobsob.
Your comment about how the new actress they've got for Astrid does look sort of like the character in terms of face shape...gosh, you're right! I didn't realise that before! I'm crossing my fingers that the in-universe explanation for her being portrayed by a Mulatto actress is because this version is Pictish - Scotland's extinct indigenous race of people. I doubt they'll go that route though, which is a shame, as it would make a lot of sense!!! Personally, I could accept her change in hairstyle...if they just stuck the iconic skulls on her outfit. It would make all the difference!
It’s not just about the actors, the outfits too just feel really off, like they don’t really correspond with the characters, or at least they don’t feel like the characters. Of course there’s nothing wrong with the outfits looking different from the show, cosplayers themselves tend to also deviate from the canon outfits sometimes adding accessories that actually make it more interesting. Hell even franchises sometimes completely change a characters look due to it being a different universe or rendition, like MLP or Transformers or Fnaf but still keeping certain fundamentals. But this doesn’t look stylised…it looks they didn’t care to put the effort and budget to make the clothes not only similar but actually appealing they just feel so…bland ? Or something feels missing.
My main problem is with Hiccup himself. I don't like any of the major pointless changes but the movie depicted him as a teen who barely looks grown enough to be a teen among the others of his age, yet they cast a teen that could pass as an adult (if someone said the actor was 18 I wouldn't be surprised) and that is a big deal when it comes to how all the characters perceive Hiccup, as less than what he was supposed to be. An actor younger than the character actually was would be a better choice.
I also think the actor looks "too handsome". Hiccup is supposed to be a scrawny, viking teenager. I can't imagine a irl version to actually look physivally apppealing. At least not in the 1st movie
@@bugcatcherjacky1334 I saw someone else talking this but I never considered any male as handsome in my whole life so it was hard for me to tell if that was true or not, though he does look like the kind of boy girls would call a heartthrob or have a crush on... so it must be true I guess.
@0OB08O It's no specifically an attraction type of handsome I suppose. I mean, have you never seen another man and thought "He must be a girls magnet"? That's what I mean, sort of. His skin is just too clean, his face looks a little too pretty and he doesn't sell the scrawny kid look. I mean I get it, Hollywood needs appealing actors, but it just doesn't fit in the world. I have the same issue with Astrid. She is "too pretty" for my taste in 1st movie Astrid. They would both be better fitted for the second movie for sure, but not the first.
When _Cinderella_ (2015) was made, they knew better than to copy the animated movie since that film was made with 1940s animation in mind and not live-action. _Cinderella_ (2015) looks and feels like a _Cinderella_ film that has never existed before, and it has that timeless feel to it. It's very uncanny valley that the live-action _HTTYD_ decided to simply copy-paste the animated movie's visuals, so it looks like a live-action cartoon. The characters look like cosplayers, they don't look authentic. The casting of Vanessa from the live-action _Little Mermaid_ film was fantastic and she looked like a believable character, and did not look like a cosplayer.
My biggest problem with the live action remakes aside from them only being made for money is the pure disrespect for animation. The original was "just for kids" so we need to make an "edgier" version for adults. Stop trying to fix what isn't broken.
6:55 yep! Agreed! I can get people changing Equestria girls because they canonically don’t have a race but when you change certain parts of character that are canon people are going be upset. Also in my opinion you change some parts and it can be it’s own thing. Brandy’s Cinderella is good example that you can change and be it’s own thing. Nobody had anything to say about Brandy’s Cinderella because it’s was Roger and Hammerstein Cinderella and they got creative with it. Same with The Wiz. Nothing wrong with having diverse characters by itself but when it’s done insincerely, it can be a issue. Great video!🐉🐲
You made a great point about books and stories that haven't been adapted into movies or shows. In my opinion. HTTYD feels like it doesn't need a live action retelling. A book series that I'd like to see come back and perhaps expanded upon is Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hool.
Artists working on an original story: I must think this character's design through and through, it is important to convey all their personality through their looks, for the viewer to comprehend this character more easily. The golden rule is that a viewer should be able to distinguish general personality of a character from their still image alone Movie makers: ehh who cares about the looks 🤗🤗🤗
It's especially annoying when a physical trait was important to a character's story and in the adaptation, they change that physical trait. Like if You have a character whose hair color is a cause of discorcs or mockery by the character's peers in the story, but in the adaptation, you changed the character's hair color so that element of the story ether no longer makes sense or is no longer present. Or alternatively, if the physical trait is a major part of their identifications, like if they are known throughout all the lands for having that feature, like One-eye Joe, or Peg-leg Pete, if they didn't have those traits in the adaptation, then is like removing a part of that character's personality. It just wouldn't be Peg-leg Pete without his peg-leg.
🐉 Hey, at least we don’t have to be mad at Disney this time. 13:33 Bell-Bell beat me to the punch! The fact that comic book characters change (not just in design, but sometimes in personality) with nobody seeming to care (and sometimes liking the changes even more) has always complicated this issue for me. In addition to what you said (that comic book fans may have gotten used to changes like these), I think that, as a whole, whether the changes are accepted or not is on a case by case basis (and I think that goes for just about anything, not just comic books). Sometimes, fans agree that the changes made the character/story better, or that the changes are at least harmless; but other times, they think that the changes made the character/story worse, or are at least pointless.
Oh don't worry, the "why are you doing this?!" finger will be once again pointed at Disney once the live action Lilo and Stitch...and the other LA adaptations keep churning out. XD And yeah, the comic book characters do complicate the situation X'D
The director on his Instagram explains most of the casting and clothing choices, like why Astrid actress didn't have blonde hair etc. I am actually so excited for this film, all the cast look great!!
@pyw3823 most people aren't going to check the director's statements regarding such things and even if they did, many of us just don't like it when familiar characters have such drastic design changes. Regardless, I'm glad you're excited ✨😁
@@bugcatcherjacky1334 that would be the question you ask the costume department. Like you can just go and check his post and comments that answer the most important questions. Also that is one outfit, they probably have more in movie.
Growing up in my teenage years, i loved how to train your dragon…I was obsessed with it. I even cosplayed as Astrid for Halloween 10 years ago! And…I plain on cosplaying as her again when I see the live action remake. Am I excited for it? Eh…I don’t know, I am curious about how it’ll turn out tho.
Didn't we go through years of hearing that Vikings and similar cultures DID NOT have braids, specifically box braids? Yet the live action Astrid does?? What??
They actually have had braids but its more of a social class thing I believe so it prob wouldn't make sense for he to have then anyway plus I don’t think they had box braids
In my experience people's tolerance to design changes is directly proportional to the quality of the movie/show in question. If the movie/show is good, they don't really care if the actor doesn't look like the character, for example the cast of the Lord of the Rings movies doesn't really match the description from the books, but the movies are really good so you don't really care about it, but with these live-action adaptations they are almost always crap so changing a beloved character's looks makes it even worse
Great video! Love the criticism with comedic examples, the Stitch as a duck hypothetical was very funny but also does a really good job at getting the point across. Super cute art style too, excited to hear what other stuff you go over, subbed!
Like you mentioned if the show was based more on the books then maybe I would be interested in this but it’s not so you know this franchise already finished for me after the third movie was pretty underwhelming for me at least so I just don’t care at this point. Great video
The point of this movie is to be a cashgrab. It tries to leech off the popularity of the original while sucking out all of its soul. I hate remakes like these, especially when the originals are my entire childhood. They also got rid of toothless's slit pupils to make him cuter and boy AM I MAD ABOUT THAT.
Meanwhile, the actors they got for the Nut twins don't even look like they're twins (not even faturnal ones). And the actor who's playing Fishlegs didn't bother to dye his hair blonde nor wear a wig.
I have to wonder what the casting director was thinking? I know they're trying to be their own thing at least, but you can't ignore the impact these characters have imprinted on people growing up.
At this point I'm no longer going to be a fan of any fandom, because every single fandom that I loved has either been changed or butcherd in order to follow trend, DreamWorks is clearly doing what Disney has done in their recent live action remakes. Is it that hard to make an original story?
Had anyone else read the original books? Theyre SO DIFFERENT! And i dont mean it like Harry Potter fans say about the HP movies vs HP books, i mean the HTTYD books are ENTIRELY different from the movies!!!
I wish more people understood this thought process. I’ve seen too many people on places like Twitter just being so set on believing the reason people don’t like changes like this being because of racism. Especially when someone’s just being blunt about disliking the change and pointing out the obvious. Some people really can’t understand that to some of us, it’s just weird to change how an established character looks. Totally agree that people shouldn’t bully the actors. But I also think it’s ok to be open with critiquing a studio decision. I also very much understand that there’s people out there who dislike the change for the wrong reasons but I really do feel like a lot of us who don’t like changes like this value accuracy and staying true to the how an established character looks.
I'll just add my two cents that design changes can infact erase original designs. Look at Nick Fury for example(and I love Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury). The original Nick Fury is a white man. And I actually knew of him before because of the video game adaptations for marvel, Ultimate Alliance. I still love movie Nick Fury, but he is never depicted as white anymore. That design is gone.
You bringing up the comic book example was really interesting! As someone who *kind* of knew about Barbara Gordon but never really read the comics or watched the cartoons, I was completely unfazed by her race change in the LEGO Batman movie. But maybe there were some hardcore DC fans who DID have a problem with that. And then when they race swapped Ariel, I had a much different reaction, because the original character design is what I’m USED TO. In fact, I think this is why people get so up in arms when artists draw characters who aren’t human (Sonic, My Little Pony, and the like), and something is done in a way that doesn’t match a mental picture in someone’s head. A rather infamous example to me is Pinkie Pie. She has curly hair, and so lots of people see her as black-coded. She lives and works in a bakery, so people might draw her fatter because of all the sugar she is definitely consuming. But since this doesn’t match a mental picture of Pinkie Pie a lot of other people have, they get upset.
@@foxpokemonforever4775 the pinkie pie thing is fascinating. I've seen that trend of how people depict her as black, but it's interesting because her natural hair texture is long and straight. It's just her goofy magic that puffs it up lol (and I don't mean "goofy" as insulting or anything. I just mean it as fun/silly)
@@TheArtisticAloubell Strange that they would use Pinkie's hair to make that connection, seeing as Cheese Sandwich has a similar hair texture and is essentially a male version of Pinky, but his design was modeled after his voice actor, Weird Al Yankovic. Plus, Pinkie's parents seem to be modeled after the Amish.
Personally I don't like any sort of race/gender swap of existing characters. It's completely unnecessary. Companies can be diverse with new original characters, its so much better than changing what we love.
Love that reference in the title, and, sorry for being late, Alou, but it was a great video. Take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well
I don't think people had issues with the character design changes for the live action and animated adaptations of "Mo Dao Zu Shi." As far as I can tell, Lan Wangji/Lan Zhan is the only character where the live action counterpart actually resembles the animated one.
I mean, given Hollywood's track record of hiring people based off their race and not there actual acting skills, I can see why people are up in arms about this. Granted, I never heard of this girl and don't know if she's new to acting or she's experienced enough, but it doesn't change the fact that they've ALWAYS prioritized representation over anything else, otherwise, why would they even include that she's half-black? Wouldn't listing the movies that she starred in be enough? I could be wrong, though. I am very tired while writing this comment.
I’ll be honest, I’m not mad at this stuff. As long the actors. Are having fun, playing the roles right, and everything goes right for the film, I’m fine with the direction they’re going for. For the little mermaid remake, again no issue. But the execution of how they were portraying the original was really bad. This goes to all live action Disney films. I know it’s for the new audiences, but the films have no sole like the original films. So I’m hoping to god this doesn’t happen in this remake of HTTYD, and I can actually enjoy it rather than role my eyes for a bad live action remake.
Imagine Disney or Dreamworks trying to buy one piece & making luffy black or blonde hair people would definitely be furious of them & not watch that movie or show because of that
Honestly, the one reboot I'm scared of seeing is the Narnia reboot coming to Netflix. Maybe it's cause I'm biased with my love for the Disney Narnia or that I grew up with Narnia and the books, I just don't trust the barbie director with what she'll do with it (especially with the whole rock n' roll thing... seriously I don't know what that means and apparently no one knows what it means either which only makes me worry about it's reboot).
i would unironically watch a live action remake of httyd with the original book designs, including the dragon designs. not only would it be something different and thus let the film have its own identity but it would also introduce people to the original story and get more of them to buy the books, which is always amazing. it would be especially cool if they made changes to the plot that don't exist in the books or the animated movies so we can have different stories to look at and not just a copy and paste of the original, but that's just my opinion lol
i feel like people aren’t talking enough about how live-action Astrid has literally NOTHING in common with her animated counterpart. im not just talking about race-just the whole design in general. all of the kids (except Snotlout for some reason) have subtle design details that match their respective dragons; - the twins’ helmets match Barf & Belch’s horns, and they tend to wear greens (+ blonde/yellow hair matching the yellow underbelly of their dragon) - Fishlegs is a larger, more rounded character, who wears almost exclusively brown, giving him a similar look to Meatlug - even Hiccup ends up getting his prosthetic leg to match Toothless’ missing tail fin, which starts off brown like his vest (they match more obviously in the sequels) - Snotlout does get a slight redesign in the tv series that matches Hookfang bettter, but i won’t count that since it wasn’t his original design Astrid’s most noticeable design features are her blonde hair and her blue shirt. she and Stormfly are designed to complement each other. Stormfly’s main body color is blue, like her rider’s shirt, and the yellow spines match Astrid’s yellow/blonde hair. Astrid being the only character to predominantly feature blue in her design also helps her stand out amongst the other teens in group shots. we all already know live-action Astrid doesn’t have the blonde hair, but i’ve yet to see any photos or shots where she’s wearing a blue shirt. she’s red and brunette/brown. frankly, she looks like she should be riding Hookfang, and Snotlout should take Stormfly. i would be SO MAD if they did that, but from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know anything about the animated movie and just pays attention to basic character design, i would 100% expect her to be paired with Hookfang during the battle with the Red Death. i would care SO MUCH LESS about how live-action Astrid looks if she wasn’t supposed to match her dragon, BUT SHE IS. THEY ALL ARE. EVEN STOIC AND GOBBER LOOK LIKE THEIR DRAGONS IN THE SECOND MOVIE. all the blonde hair-save for Gobber-being changed to red/brown bothers me too, but Astrid was just the main point of the video. i don’t care as much about Fishlegs having brown hair bc he’s still very recognizable as his character, but i absolutely have an issue with the twins being redheads. in short, Stoic is the only main character that should have red hair. it’s a deliberate design choice to make him stand out amongst the rest of the cast, and the twins also having that hair color lessens the impact of Stoic’s design, subconsciously. (sry im an artist who’s main thing is character design and live-action remakes in general tend to REALLY piss me off with their design changes. i have the HTTYD art book, and i literally read it RELIGIOUSLY bc it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.)
It actually looks like Astrid will change her outfit and hairstyle a few times in the movie. We've seen a red outfit and a blue-ish outfit (such as in my thumbnail). Nevertheless, I definitely understand what you're saying! It doesn't seem like they're respecting the original character designs and their intentions at all DX
@ i did end up finding a picture of her with red and blue, which was nice to see. if they shift get color scheme from red to blue throughout the movie to symbolize her warming up to Hiccup and becoming less aggressive, then i will absolutely take my comment back. typing this just made me realize people might put Astrid into the “aggressive black woman” stereotype tho… there is no winning😭
the only thing i'll say about the decision is this: if changing the colour of a characters skin, hair, or any other aspect of said character, then whats the point of making said change to begin with?
I'm allowed to have an opinion before that as well. I just don't like it when characters I'm attached to look different. And many others feel the same >_
@@TheArtisticAloubell How To Train Your Dragon is a fantasy, not historical fact. Also, in the remake, all the vikings are decendants of the best dragon fighters far and beyond where the vikings have traveled, so no one knows if they were all white or not.
0:05 same verse same as the first! 😂 Que the problematic song! (not sure if there is a problematic song in this movie, but I think it works anyway! Plus it's fun!)
based on trailer just feels like the "live action" lion king again so even if they all looked like the character i probably wouldnt watch but also i wish stoic was much taller too
Brilliantly said! I have always been a person upset about character design changes. I mean sometimes one would come along and I would like their new hairstyle more, but typically I would like the first design I bonded with. I think Astrid's hair was better with the anime Mom braid. It kind of goes better with her group Mom energy having to wrangle in the goofier/ less competent members of her team, correct their errors and stuff. The twin tails is a bit too juvenille to back up that theme to me, and I was afraid it was going to look too much like Ruffnut, but that isn't going to happen now and I think Ruffnut (who may be called Brunhilde now) wears her hair down. I have been angry for like 20 years that Chrono Cross Schala did not look anything like the Schala from Chrono Trigger. I expect to be angry about that to my grave. I stopped playing the game when I realized that was coming. As for the ponies, in some way I don't think they are the same character. Usually enough changes that you could believe it's like two people named "Mark Smith" who lived a few hundred years apart. Except if they do that Camp Cutie Mark it would be a strange mutliverse retcon of all their characters.
@@OriasRofocale Astrid actually didn't have the "anime mom" hair until the sequel. In the first movie, she had a braided ponytail that ran down her back 😁 But I still see what you mean! It looks like "Astrid" will change her outfit and hair throughout the live action movie.
@@TheArtisticAloubell True, true! I consider that first one anime mom hair in training. Haha, older sister perhaps? But again, a bit more serious than the other viking hairstyles. Like, serious and reliable vibes. I was thinking that too. I still feel like they could have woven some blonde braids in at least, or a wig. I can understand why she might not have wanted to color her real hair, and maybe there was too much to fit under a wig cap without cutting it... but Gobber's actor I think it naturally red haired with a beard. He definitely went in on the embody the character from what it looks. Astrid's weird long underwear outfit is kind of unappealing costuming. Some of this might just be because they are set photos and will look better in post, but ick. Like, the cartoon version splits up the top and bottom with different colors, that makes it so much more pleasing to the eye. At least she got back her headband.
I'm actually more off put by Astrid's outfit now that I see it. What is this red? Why is she wearing it? It looks like a full body pyjamas, or superhero outfit, help 😂
Judging by the screenshots, it looks like Astrid will wear multiple outfits throughout the movie. But yeah, I understand the criticisms regarding the red outfit X3
Wait THATS Fish Legs? He looks like Snotloud? Speaking of which...i missed him. Where is he? Wait nevermind, i found him, now bith of them look like brothers
Aside from thr exhausting talk about racebending (not a fan), I'm curious to see how people treat DW if they keep up with the live-action remakes. I feel like people give them a pass while Disney gets criticized for a lot of stuff (ie when I was growing up, someone said Pixar and DW made original films while all Disney did were adaptations; half of DW's projects are derived from books, folktales, or other existing franchises!)
@ThePrincessCH Sinbad is the only one, as far as I know. Ironically, it was originally conceived at Disney from the writers of "Aladdin." 'll just keep a chart here: 1. "Shrek" franchise--A children's book and fairy tales 2. How to Train Your Dragon--Book series 3. Rise of the Guardians--Book series 4. The Wild Robot--Book series 5. Orion and the Dark--Book Series 6. Trolls--Doll line 7. Mr Peabody and Sherman--segments from a tv show 8. The Bad Guys--book series 9. Captain Underpants--Book series 10. Home--book series 11. The Prince of Egypt--religious text (There was also "Joseph, King of Dreams," but that wasn't a theatrical film) 12. Wallace & Gromit--short films 13. Over the Hedge--comic strip Altogether, these are 25/49 of Dreamwork's productions.
Wasn’t the point of the twins being so alike was that because people in the village first thought they where indentical twins (2 boys) cos Rufnut ”didn’t act girly”. And for that That’s awesome cos it dosn’t matter what gender you are. You are you!
I'm a fan of Doctor Who. I'm used to the Doctor's appearance changing every couple of years. Adjusting to the unfamiliarity of the new actor is built into the mechanics of the show. The first few episodes after the change a dedicated to the Doctor reintroduced themself to the audience. Sometimes, the Doctor has to prove to their former companions that they are still the same person.
🐲I have nothing against the actors, but I am against Hollywood and their reboots. They can't keep doing only reboots and sequels. It might be comfortable for them, but what about people who have voices out there that want to make something original but can't because originality isn't good for Hollywood. One movie though that I'm against the actor choice though is for Beauty and the Beast (2017) casting Emma Watson as Belle. She might look the part, but she can't sing and that's an issue (at least to me). As for the sequel issue, I think it's fine to have sequels but only if they have good story potential and not for money (Toy Story as a good example since we're now on movie #5 now). Other than that, I can only pray that we'll eventually get an original stories made out there for everyone to love and enjoy (other than Pixar's Elio).
@@abby-cadabby unfortunately, as long as Hollywood keeps getting the nostalgia money, they'll keep up with the reboots 😭 They'll have to lose a lot of money to change their minds
Honestly, tired of all these look changing already. HTTYD is one of my favourite series and I did enjoy the live action but noticing how they just changed so many characters' hair just annoys me. Also , in the upcoming HBO HP series , Snape is going to be played by a black actor. Yikes again .
Are you talking about anti sonic from the Archie comics that turned green after using the master emerald? Or manic, sonic's brother from the show sonic underground?
🐉 I don't think I have much else to add than what you expressed in the video, so I hope you don't mind me ranting a little about this live-action being made in the first place, because honestly, I can't tell which remake is more unnecessary between this and the Moana one. 😬 I mean, HTTYD *has* existed for longer than Moana, but the third movie was less than five years ago, so it still feels too soon, y'know? And a lot of people were actually happy about Toothless looking so similar to his animated counterpart, but to me it makes it feel more pointless? I'm overall just frustrated that Dreamworks has too joined this cash-grabby trend >.< I'm glad the originals still exist and that we'll always have them to go back to, but I for one refuse to support these remakes anymore. For the large majority of them, the original animated movies were already perfect the way they were, and animation was the best media to tell these stories. These remakes just feel disrespectful to animation, and I am not about that. Can there be good things about them and even creative ideas when they make spinoffs of the originals? Sure! But I'd honestly rather show my financial support for a new story made with love and care, and not a story I've already watched dozens of times, just with an HD-desaturated-gritty filter put on top. 🤷♀
It's definitely so much worse since HTTYD is still a relatively young series. I get remaking things that are decades old, but...this? Moana? Lilo and Stitch? TANGLED? Why? It really does seem to be both about the money and lack of respect for animation.
Live action remakes just shouldn’t exist in the first place. It makes the characters and dragons look like they don’t belong to the same place, where in the original they actually look like they’re from the same universe. Live action remakes are often disappointing and just flop
What you said about there not being a point for live actions when you could adapt your own story and still have characters to pick from and adapt. YES! 100%, I agree! Why make the same movie twice for money when you could adapt something yourself. I have adapted something myself actually, I am a big fan of the Count Of Monte Cristo, an epic story about revenge, forgiveness, and God (It also feels like your reading One Piece because it is so darn long, I highly recommend this outstanding book regardless). We only get adaptations of this amazing book every once in a while(They are all terrible except for the anime where the Count was a space vampire), but I decided 'Fine! I'll do it myself' I adapted the book to where I could tell the story over text with some friends, I made the language more modern because my friends don't understand Old English or Shakespearean English and won't be familiar with the language choice. Heck, maybe one day, I could adapt The Count into a show or movie. I'm not trying to start a discussion about greed and how these corporations are stuck on what's marketable, I'm showing how you can use your own God given gifts to make something yourself! I'm not asking people to make full blown adaptations of the Count by any means (Heck no that book is 117 chapters long and the plot is one of the most convoluted things ever), but if there is something that you love like a small folktale or fairy tale you think would be great with a modern spin go for it. You'd be surprised what you can do if you try! Sorry about that rant, I just am very passionate about storytelling!
@Auburnfrost Hopefully someday soon Disney/Hollywood will get comfortable branching out to new ideas/stories again! And adapting things that have never been adapted before ✨
I love the scriptures you put at the beginning. It's such a little thing, but I check them every time. Also, they're Vikings. They're *supposed* to be blond. The directors have clearly never been to Norway.
"Why doesn't Hollywood just make new characters and new stories for POC and LGBTQIA+ actors if they care so much about representation?!" Because new stories don't sell. And Hollywood cares, first and foremost, about profit. The only reason a lot of "mainstream media" has pivoted to representation in general is that there is a perceived market/spending power for previously marginalized and underprivileged groups. But by and large, most non-straight characterization is alluded to to gain the money of the non-straight audience but vague enough to not "scare away" the "anti-woke" audience. Hollywood is still VERY culturally conservative, especially in its upper management and project funding. If they actually 'were' progressive, it wouldn't be the side characters that are getting race-gender-sexuality swapped. We'd be getting a black Hiccup, or Percy Jackson, or Harry Potter. Instead it's the Hermiones, the Grovers, the Astrids, and the Annabeths that get changed. And the LGBTQIA+ rep is either "squint or you'll miss it" or easily edited out for the Chinese audience like Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker did. Corporations, even if they engage with progressive looking public images, are not the allies of ANY marginalized community.
Brilliantly said! I'll definitely be sharing this around. *pointless rant you don't need to read* As someone who grew up with MLP's g3, I was really upset about motherly and fashionable Rainbow Dash being turned into a self-obsessed tomboy. Why couldn't they just use a different pony who already had that personality or create a new pony altogether? That just immediately alienated me from g4, and I should have been the primary audience for it as I was still pretty young during the transition between gens. That as well as the art style not looking like ponies at all 😅 Funnily enough, I didn't mind Pinkie Pie's appearance change at all, just Rainbow Dash's personality swap, so that proves your point. I ended up watching a few episodes much later and was confused to find out that Cheerilee retained most of her characteristics, so huh??? Honestly, the costuming for the humans in this movie look super cheap to me. I don't know how to explain it. They should just have made them photorealistic too at this point and have the entire movie be special effects (code for animated).
I really wish they just went with the books instead of remaking the movies. For one, hiccup would have been a red head. Then you have Camicazi. Who, while she has illustrations, she really doesn't have any actual descriptions at least from what I can recall from the books. (That's why she was totally able to switch her out with Astrid to begin with). So I'm unsure why they didn't make either Camicazi or made a better adaptation to the books. And as other comments talk about as well, the outfits are also iffy at least in leaks and stuff. Maybe actual film will fix it but everythimg is blendy and iffy. It's hard to describe but it's bland. Long story short is, Idc about the race stuff, and the actress does share features no doubt, had she been blonde there would be no issues. Same with the twins. If you want a red-head, make it Hiccup,. Pay homage to the books. Big shrug though.
i can't help but notice it's also pretty much always female characters that get race swapped/become unrecognizable in all these live adaptions... almost like in their eyes women are interchangeable 🤔
@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF Apparently in the new Harry Potter series a black man is being eyed to play Snape 🤡 So while it seems to be mostly women, some men get the short end of the stick as well 😓
🐉 i hope this movie would fix hiccup and astrid’s relationship ppl are saying astrid is hard on hiccup forcing him to be the chief and also the third movie wedding scene did not earn to me
@@magivenderstudios I'm okay with how Astrid x Hiccup originally played out. My only gripe with it was how quickly Astrid's personality changed in the first movie. But aside from that, I like pretty much everything about Hiccup x Astrid. It probably helped that I watched all of the TV shows, so I had more time to see their relationship develop over time 😁
@@TheArtisticAloubellthe reason her person changed is because she was forcing herself to be very hardened and angry to fit the standard of viking. shes similar to hiccup, yk? overly slender compared to most vikings. so, she doesnt want to bw treated similarly, especially when her family is already humiliated. but, hiccup gives her, ALL the teens, a chance to soften, theyre still bratty teens, but they dont need to pretend anymore.
🐲 #WatchedTheWholeThing Yeah honestly if there were any more noticeable recognizable aspects to them I'd be more ok with them. Instead we got "hey! They are viking kids! So obviously they're Astrid, ruff and tuff, fishlegs and etc 😂" Astrid isn't too bad, but they could have At least tried to give her wig (even a bad one like Yue in live action ATLA😂) like Yue! 🤣 Sigh. Was a live-action remake even asked for? One issue I understand is that some visual things are not really possible, or otherwise, difficult to produce in reality. *cough [Last Airbender] cough* What I have heard discussed is the underlying reasons for casting certain people for a character role being other than the best portrayal. Overall, I consider that live-action remakes are being pitched as a less risky cash-grab as opposed to a ' "new" ' original story. Plus, I'm not sure if the [Entertainment] Industry is just uninterested in animation, or if they see it as being "only for children". My brother mentioned awhile ago that animation, originally, was definitely NOT ok for children. Nonetheless, grown adults are watching Pokémon and other animated media, so checkmate.
You know I wonder why do these animated movies even me live action remakes like they were good when they were animated so why do they need a live-action remake especially when the live-action remake is just bad or boring and also live action a lot of the style and charm of the Judy animated movie is gone like how all the Disney princesses don't have the iconic hairstyles anymore in the live-action movies and only have these basic boring hairstyles that just don't he was cooler than interesting as the original hairstyle in the 2D animated movie like how Jasmine's scorpion hairstyle now in the live action is just a boring simple ponytail and also a lot of live actions lose the impact of the movie originally had like Mulan lost a lot of the impact it had originally because it wasn't about mulan's character anymore it wasn't about her becoming her own person instead she just became the boring strong female character that doesn't actually have flaws or learn anything like strong female leads aren't bad it's just that when like a lot of companies will make these characters they do them wrong they make characters that are flawless and perfect and never make a single mistake because I think this character representing every woman in the world when that's not what that character should be doing she should represent herself and because you're going to be a person she should have flaws and problems and things that make her human also live actions the colors tend to suck because it's harder to get good colors in a live action like in a 2d animated movie or a free anime movie you could have amazing colors and beautiful scenes but then a live-action all those colors we washed out and it would just be blackish green black is red and brownish orange and just very ugly muddy colors and a bunch of ugly colors that live action movies especially ones that are remakes of a 2d or 3D animated movie they tend to have muddy colors that just aren't good like fate the wing Saga where alethea is no longer this pink and soft blue castle inside address is boring medieval European castle that is gray and basic and boring and does not have any identity of its own identity and I don't like live action adaptations of 2D animated movies or 3D animated movies because it's kind of just spitting in the face of that movie being animated and saying he couldn't have possibly had an impact to kind of possibly been good because it was in 2D when that's discounting 2D animation like you can do a lot with 2D and 3D animation it's a good medium for movies shows and stories so why are we treating it like it's worthless compared to live action what's just as good if not better than live action I don't feel like live action films are bad I just don't like how people will oftentimes say that something animated could never hack as much of the punch as a live action movie I just don't like how companies will undervalued animators and take them for granted
Idk. I love the original HTTYD Movies, but i am equally excited for the new movie. Now did it needed a live action? No, not really. But i really dislike all the discourse about the character chances... Saw way to often ppl arguing Astrid isn't "historically correct" now, like HTTYD ever was historically correct (guys, dragons. Hello). I see it more of a new thing, so I don't care how the chars look. I Heard somewhere they changed the story anyways, so I don't really care how the new-old chars look. As long as the movie will be good, i will not care. I would probably not even care if the movie is bad, bc it is it's own thing lol (imo)
To your comment about HTTYD not being historically accurate: yes, dragons aren't real, but just because you add fantasy elements into a story does not invalidate the cultural significance of the characters and their ethnicity/what their intended ethnicity is. If the intent is that this is a Norse society filled with people of a certain lineage and certain societal norms, then that should be respected. It's definitely a sensitive topic and one can definitely get lost in it. Because yes, they are intended to be Vikings, but to what degree have they shown Viking society and values in the original movies? How accurate were they to how Vikings really were? It's when you ask questions like that that things get murky, for sure, because even though I'm not an expert in Viking history and such, I can almost guarantee that HTTYD got some details wrong XD What they didn't seem to get wrong, however, was at the very least the overall look of the characters race wise (and even some clothing choices). Since HTTYD had some acknowledgement that most if not all Vikings were white people with blonde, brown, and maybe red hair colors, that's the expectation moving forward. But the point of this video, even if you ignore the "historically correct" argument, even if you don't care about anyone's ethnicity or race, many people, such as myself, just like the characters we like to be recognizable and look the way they looked as we were attached to them. For many, it can feel like a personal attack for some reason or another to change something so integral to a character that they're/we're attached to. If you take the politics out of it, that's a big part of the issue. Some people, such as yourself, don't care about that--and that's valid! But many of us do. I just want the characters I'm familiar with to look like themselves X'D No one's feelings are wrong, I just want both sides to understand each other. Having said that, I'm glad you're looking forward to the movie and I hope you enjoy your time watching it ^_^
🐲🐉 It hard believe there are did again in wrong actor/stereotype & monotype replace the original. That is why I refuse to watch movie and Blocked before release the movie.
After looking at the peeks of the cast, I was disappointed 🥲 And no, I don’t have problems with the actors themselves, but rather how the look in the screenshots. I have no problems with the hairstyle no, but Astrid’s famous blonde hair is just gone and poof. Because when I look at her. It doesn’t SCREAM Astrid. I want to be able to look at someone and KNOW it’s them without having to be told who they are in a live action adaptation. I appreciate that they kept Hiccup and Toothless the same, but then why don’t they do the same for the other characters??? This is just my opinion, no hate. I’m grateful for you saying something about this :D
🐉Personally, I always felt that if a character has a distinct look that everyone can recognize, it should be left untampered with as much as possible and maybe take inspiration from that said character and make something new, but that's just my take on it.
Hair dye or wigs would have been a easy way to solve this
They already dyed her hair blonde in a TV show. Look at what they did to the twins
Agree.
Isn't she already wearing a wig? Nico Parker's hair is shorter, right?
@@ThePrincessCH if that’s the case the choice of wig is very dum😅
Exactly, the actor look okay as Astrid just dye her hair and boom, mostly fixed
But red? Not only would it make her an easier target with how bright it is but I don't think it matches her character 😅 Astrid might not be an inventor but she's not dumb and it'll be harder for others to know if she's hurt or not
She was all rage and anger before Hiccup and without him she would have turn worse.
@@Èèĕě-m1f sure I agree. Tho she chould be fine if they just gave her a blonde wig.
@@Èèĕě-m1f Nico is half Scandinavian I think but not all Scandinavians look like Astrid.
@ yeah, as was pointed out in the video, she actually very closely resembles Astrid. If they just made her blonde, which they could easily do (hair color is the easiest thing to change on an actor/actress).
@ Yeah
Hope that doesn't happen in the movie lmao sobsob.
yep, its sad
Your comment about how the new actress they've got for Astrid does look sort of like the character in terms of face shape...gosh, you're right! I didn't realise that before!
I'm crossing my fingers that the in-universe explanation for her being portrayed by a Mulatto actress is because this version is Pictish - Scotland's extinct indigenous race of people. I doubt they'll go that route though, which is a shame, as it would make a lot of sense!!!
Personally, I could accept her change in hairstyle...if they just stuck the iconic skulls on her outfit. It would make all the difference!
@@cosmiquealiene6168 yeah, I'm kind of missing her classic outfit!
And they ruin it by not giving her a blonde wig. She do look alike but cos of the hair choice it’s hard to see it.
@@0OB08O that's actually a fantastic point! I didn't consider that.
@@TheArtisticAloubellcould you do a movie amy and Rouge of sonic movie 3
Thank you
You made a great point about books and stories that haven't been adapted into movies or shows.
The golden rule is that a viewer should be able to distinguish general personality of a character from their still image alone
Movie makers: ehh who cares about the looks 🤗🤗🤗
I know I'd be FUMING if someone changed my character's design for an adaptation 😤
You have a wholesome heart also I just think in general, the live action how to train your Dragon does not need to exist. The cartoons are just fine.
@@cartoonloverzxc3237 aww thank you ❤️✨
🐉 Hey, at least we don’t have to be mad at Disney this time.
XD
And yeah, the comic book characters do complicate the situation X'D
Alan Rickman’s casting changed the perceptopn of Severus Snape irrevocably.
people still use the harry potter joke "he said calmly" to this day
The director on his Instagram explains most of the casting and clothing choices, like why Astrid actress didn't have blonde hair etc.
I am actually so excited for this film, all the cast look great!!
@pyw3823 most people aren't going to check the director's statements regarding such things and even if they did, many of us just don't like it when familiar characters have such drastic design changes.
Regardless, I'm glad you're excited ✨😁
What was his explanation for giving Astrid the most dreadful, red outfit? 😂
@@bugcatcherjacky1334 that would be the question you ask the costume department. Like you can just go and check his post and comments that answer the most important questions. Also that is one outfit, they probably have more in movie.
@pyw3823 Where does he explain it? I'm not on most platforms, unfortunately
Vikings also didn't wear horned helmets either.
I don't think people argued that they didn't have braids or maybe I just never heard that
@ThePrincessCH You're completely missing the point aren't you?
In my experience people's tolerance to design changes is directly proportional to the quality of the movie/show in question. If the movie/show is good, they don't really care if the actor doesn't look like the character, for example the cast of the Lord of the Rings movies doesn't really match the description from the books, but the movies are really good so you don't really care about it, but with these live-action adaptations they are almost always crap so changing a beloved character's looks makes it even worse
I think the actors should look as close to the character they are playing as possible. 🐉
Great video
@@Chub624 thank you! ✨
Yeah I heard they were different! They could have adapted the books! But no...it has to be a remake. 😮💨
Great point!
I just wanted her to be blonde was that so much to ask for ;w;
Greetings from Colombia to you as well
Thanks! I appreciate you watching, and God bless you too
I don't think people had issues with the character design changes for the live action and animated adaptations of "Mo Dao Zu Shi." As far as I can tell, Lan Wangji/Lan Zhan is the only character where the live action counterpart actually resembles the animated one.
Imagine Disney or Dreamworks trying to buy one piece & making luffy black or blonde hair people would definitely be furious of them & not watch that movie or show because of that
YUP
Honestly, the one reboot I'm scared of seeing is the Narnia reboot coming to Netflix. Maybe it's cause I'm biased with my love for the Disney Narnia or that I grew up with Narnia and the books, I just don't trust the barbie director with what she'll do with it (especially with the whole rock n' roll thing... seriously I don't know what that means and apparently no one knows what it means either which only makes me worry about it's reboot).
i would unironically watch a live action remake of httyd with the original book designs, including the dragon designs. not only would it be something different and thus let the film have its own identity but it would also introduce people to the original story and get more of them to buy the books, which is always amazing. it would be especially cool if they made changes to the plot that don't exist in the books or the animated movies so we can have different stories to look at and not just a copy and paste of the original, but that's just my opinion lol
i feel like people aren’t talking enough about how live-action Astrid has literally NOTHING in common with her animated counterpart. im not just talking about race-just the whole design in general.
all of the kids (except Snotlout for some reason) have subtle design details that match their respective dragons;
- the twins’ helmets match Barf & Belch’s horns, and they tend to wear greens
(+ blonde/yellow hair matching the yellow underbelly of their dragon)
- Fishlegs is a larger, more rounded character, who wears almost exclusively brown, giving him a similar look to Meatlug
- even Hiccup ends up getting his prosthetic leg to match Toothless’ missing tail fin, which starts off brown like his vest (they match more obviously in the sequels)
- Snotlout does get a slight redesign in the tv series that matches Hookfang bettter, but i won’t count that since it wasn’t his original design
Astrid’s most noticeable design features are her blonde hair and her blue shirt. she and Stormfly are designed to complement each other.
@ i did end up finding a picture of her with red and blue, which was nice to see. if they shift get color scheme from red to blue throughout the movie to symbolize her warming up to Hiccup and becoming less aggressive, then i will absolutely take my comment back.
typing this just made me realize people might put Astrid into the “aggressive black woman” stereotype tho…
there is no winning😭
the only thing i'll say about the decision is this: if changing the colour of a characters skin, hair, or any other aspect of said character, then whats the point of making said change to begin with?
Wait until you see the movie in theaters before having an opinion.

In the first movie, she had a braided ponytail that ran down her back 😁
But I still see what you mean!
How many DreamWorks films are folktale based?
@ThePrincessCH Sinbad is the only one, as far as I know. Ironically, it was originally conceived at Disney from the writers of "Aladdin." 'll just keep a chart here:
1. "Shrek" franchise--A children's book and fairy tales
2. How to Train Your Dragon--Book series
3. Rise of the Guardians--Book series
4. The Wild Robot--Book series
5. Orion and the Dark--Book Series
6. Trolls--Doll line
7. Mr Peabody and Sherman--segments from a tv show
8. The Bad Guys--book series
9. Captain Underpants--Book series
10. Home--book series
11. The Prince of Egypt--religious text (There was also "Joseph, King of Dreams," but that wasn't a theatrical film)
12. Wallace & Gromit--short films
13. Over the Hedge--comic strip
Altogether, these are 25/49 of Dreamwork's productions.

I'm overall just frustrated that Dreamworks has too joined this cash-grabby trend >.<
I'm glad the originals still exist and that we'll always have them to go back to, but I for one refuse to support these remakes anymore.
I don't get why they remake a movie so recent
I heard from Jesterbell that it's to promote an upcoming theme park attraction.
And adapting things that have never been adapted before ✨
🐉 couldn't have said it better
Slight correction: It's not the Chinese audience that they're trying to appeal to, but rather they are trying to adhere to China's censorship laws.
@ Chinese governmental censors, I meant to say.
Or even a black little mermaid
Hollywood when whitewashing: "How could you? You are discriminating people of color!"
Hollywood when blackwashing: "This seems fine to me."
It’s just Hollywood using black people for brownie points. None of us asked for this 🤷🏾♀️
I prefer the animated version

I wish that they would stop remaking old properties and come up with something original for once. 🙄
Well, technically a lot of Disney's most recognizable films are remakes of existing stories.
@ThePrincessCH I know that and I know that HTTYD is based on a book, but there is a difference between a remake and an adaptation.
Brilliantly said! I'll definitely be sharing this around.
*pointless rant you don't need to read*
As someone who grew up with MLP's g3, I was really upset about motherly and fashionable Rainbow Dash being turned into a self-obsessed tomboy.
Thank you for sharing your experience and point of view ^0^

I heard on a video from Jesterbell that they're making it to promote an upcoming theme park attraction.
Was a live-action remake even asked for? One issue I understand is that some visual things are not really possible, or otherwise, difficult to produce in reality. *cough [Last Airbender] cough*
What I have heard discussed is the underlying reasons for casting certain people for a character role being other than the best portrayal.

Long Story Short just dont watch the movie at all so it wouldnt ruined your image of httyd which I will do oof lol XD
I just want the characters I'm familiar with to look like themselves X'D
No one's feelings are wrong, I just want both sides to understand each other.
Having said that, I'm glad you're looking forward to the movie and I hope you enjoy your time watching it ^_^
