'Oasis should do what's right for them': David Gilmour on a Pink Floyd reunion | ITV News

  • There is nothing Rock 'n' roll about the building on the Sussex coast, but as I approach I can hear the unmistakable sounds of David Gilmour on guitar.
He has a particular sound that is his, and I am meeting him at a particular moment in his life.
After nine years, he has recorded a new album, and what’s more, he is preparing to take it on tour. Luck and Strange is the name, and it finds the former Pink Floyd guitarist in contemplative mood.

Yeah and bc of Roger’s narcissistic behavior over the setlist, they barely even made it to the actual gig despite only spending 3 days around each other practicing/rehearsing for a 20 minute set😂

And they were ok carrying on without Syd because they hadn't got $300 million in the bank at that point? It's easy to pretend you're doing something for noble reasons when it's just 2 old bickering men and their egos. Waters happily replaced all the members of pink floyd to perform the Wall - for years - and re-recorded DSOTM without them, but he says he couldn't possibly replace Rick? Get a grip.

From the moment Rick left this dimension, David put PF to rest.
It would make no sense to keep going without Rick.

He doesn't state it quite as directly as that, but that's the impression you get.

Reunion was in 2005, and it was beautifully done, and impactful. If you keep doing reunions, you run the risk of sliding into self parody like Kiss or Motley Crue with the endless reunion tours. It starts to become meaningless and cheap if you keep doing it. Pink Floyd put a bow on it, and it was a very special, unique, one off moment. Nick Mason throwing off his headphones and laying into a fill to herald the last solo in Comfortably Numb at Hyde Park in 2005 is how I want to remember Pink Floyd when I think of their final performance, not some half hearted thing without Rick Wright.

I tried to get tickets for the Royal Albert Hall shows. The prices were fixed but changed depending on where you were sitting (at about £300 starting price they were very expensive for me anyway). Which is to be expected. The problem has been the people buying up tickets and selling them on at up to five times the price. David launched two “warm up” gigs in Brighton for £35 a head which was brilliant. Sold out by the time I got on there….but sure enough the tickets are appearing on ViaGoGo, etc for £600+ already. You will never stop it. These ticket buying people are unfortunately just greedy and the artist is the one who can suffer by seeing empty seats in front of them on the night.

The only reason we got the "Pink Floyd" albums that we did get after Roger left was that Dave realised his name wasn't selling... albums OR tickets.
So he called his third solo album a "Pink Floyd" project (it in fact is not) to bolster up sales... and it worked.
Don't misunderstand... I love AMLoR, The Division Bell, AND The Endless River. And two of them I do indeed consider "Pink Floyd" albums... Same way I consider the albums after Syd left Pink Floyd albums.
But my point is that Dave was done with PF back in 1983, and he has always resented the fact that he could not succeed without the name "Pink Floyd" attached to his work.
He finally got past that with "On An Island"... even though there was STILL a sticker on all releases that said "The Voice and Guitar of Pink Floyd"... so maybe not until "Rattle that Lock".
Anyway... he's in no hurry to go back to Pink Floyd. Hasn't been for a long time, and I, as a fan, am glad he finally has the solo career he always wanted.
Even though his solo work pales in comparison to the work they all did together

Re: Tickets "They should choose a price and stick to it."
Yeah, right. DG fleeces his fans for 1000s of pounds with dynamic pricing and everyone takes it on the chin (because they're a bunch of overpaid middle management wa:::.rs and can afford it) Meanwhile, Oasis do EXACTLY the same thing and there's a huge uproar.
DG is far, far, more guilty of ripping off his fans than Oasis at this point. His choice of the RAH is a prime example of this.
His comment was completely insulting to just about everyone - except Dave and his bank manager.

Don’t know what you’re on about pal. There was no dynamic pricing involved for any of DGs RAH concerts. I ought to know, because I bought some.
If you tried getting them through some reselling site or Tickmaster, then more fool you. The official channels worked perfectly. And I paid exactly what I expected to.

I am incredibly lucky to have been at the final Pink Floyd reunion at Live 8 in Hyde Park back in 2005, when Roger Waters rejoined Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright (who has since passed away). They were phenomenal that night.
Any reunion now just won’t happen. They’re all pretty old, and Gilmour and Waters do not get on at all.

  • @solitarianihilista1454

Here's something that even long-term fans seem to be unaware of. From a legal point of view "Pink Floyd" is in fact only David Gilmour and Nick Mason and neither Roger Waters or Richard Wright have been members of the band for at least four decades. Wright never actualy rejoined Pink Floyd after he left in the early eighties (although he played on subsequent albums and tours he was never a legal member of the band) and Waters signed away his rights to the name just a couple of years later. Stricly and legally speaking a Pink Floyd "reunuion " would need only Gilmour and Mason. Yes, I can hear you all screaming blasphemy and rending your garments but go Google it. And don't give me that do goody good bullshit.

I think it was to do with Waters trying to take complete control of Pink Floyd at the time as years went on and Gilmour just wasn’t having it really. Legal battles etc have definitely shattered it further although in 2005 they did play together again and have since appeared on stage together for a song or 2 but they recently clashed again because Waters had been making some controversial political statements. His point is that record companies took a longer punt on artists - that's purely because the things that make today's world so short term: globalism and connectivity, simply weren't there. When Pink Floyd started out, things gree more organically, with creativity, and relied on record sales. Nowadays because of streaming absolutely ruining an artist's ability to generate an income through sales, touring becomes paramount and the touring business is dominated by Live Nation and Ticketmaster who determine the outcome of ticket prices.
