The players had been introduced to Utah. They’d been greeted by hundreds of youth hockey players at the airport; toured Delta Center and Utah Jazz headquarters; and come back to the arena to find about 12,400 people packed inside for a welcome event.

Now they introduced themselves as Utah’s new NHL team. On stage before a raucous crowd Wednesday, they were supposed to state their names, positions and hometowns one by one. But they were so emotional, so inspired, they couldn’t help but fire up the fans further.
Clayton Keller grabbed the mic and yelled, “Utah! How we doin’?” Lawson Crouse took it and yelled, “Let’s make some more noise!” Nick Bjugstad yelled, “Let’s go!” Liam O'Brien told the fans they could call him “Spicy Tuna,” and Jack McBain led a “Spicy Tuna” chant.
“This is honestly one of the coolest experiences we’ve all had as hockey players,” Alex Kerfoot told the crowd.

moved from vancouver to slc for my wife and stepdaughter, and I'm from Calgary. absolutely thrilled to get a second NHL team, and people doubting utah as a hockey or pro sports market are delusional. i was blown away how passionate sports fans are here in UT and tons of people are dying to get NHL here
I agree with you. They do love their Jazz and their soccer club, Real Salt Lake! Speaking of Vancouver, I love that city. Even the Asian population love their Canucks! Incredible.
Another Vancouverite here who moved to Utah. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment that the doubters are delusional. Unless you live here, you have no idea what this market is like. A big, beautiful multi-billion dollar facility coming to the downtown core in the years to come and over 20,000 making a deposit on season tickets, there is no doubt in my mind it will be a huge success and the envy of many already established markets.
While I'm not from Utah, I grew up in Winnipeg and now live in Calgary. I cheered for this franchise (though technically the NHL seems to consider it a new franchise, it still has some continunity with it) at one point when it was the original Winnipeg Jets but couldn't bring myself to cheer for the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes after they left my hometown, but I imagine that the excitement for a new team in Arizona in 1996 was much the same as Utah now has for its new team. It's just a shame that business-related and arena issues caused this team to move twice, so I don't ever wish that on the new Utah fans. On a happy note, Winnipeg did get an NHL team back (in 2011 at the expense of Atlanta), so now I'm both a Vancouver Canucks fan - the team I chose after the first Jets left - and a fan of the new Winnipeg Jets as well. Best of wishes to the Utah fans in the future, hockey is an amazing sport.
My daughters were invited to the airplane hanger! It was only for the kids who are registered hockey players in Utah and their families. It was an incredible experience. The players were so nice and Vejmelka signed my daughters hockey card of him and took a quick pic. Made her dreams come true! Totally worth ditching school for (haha my younger daugher missed state testing but priorities).
Tests have makeup days. Stuff like this only happens once.
Out of curiosity, has your family been following the PWHL at all?
That’s awesome! I think they are gonna be a blast in Utah.
Yeah....I like the Yeti name.....
The arena and downtown Salt Lake were absolutely electric last night (I was there). If there’s one thing we love in Utah, it’s our sports teams! Excited to have the NHL in Utah and to welcome these guys with open arms.
We were there too, I was AWESOME!!!
@@bjstengel Congrats on being awesome.
The fact that they closed the arena before the event started was crazy
Until they move.
The way Utah is receiving the former Coyotes is a 360 degree difference on how Las Vegas is receiving the A’s.
🤔
Did you mean, 180? Because 360 would kinda be the same.
@@MikeS29 I mean Las Vegas is completely all the way around opposite..Las Vegas is doing everything they can to stop the A’s from coming where Utah is embracing the Coyotes with open arms and open wallets
God himself could visit fisher in a dream telling him to sell the team, and then leave some kind of reminder of the dream in fishers head and he would say God just needs to wait until he sees Aaron judge playing in vegas ( still on the Yankees )
@@MikeS29 MJ spin and moonwalk in the opposite direction.
Brodie, lifelong Utahn here. I LOVE your show and your perspectives. KSL TVhas called themselves the news specialists my whole life--so much so that I never gave it any thought. So to hear you specifically point that out made me laugh. The hockey team moving here has definitely gained you a new fan.
Utah will be a great spot for the NHL. Just wish AZ would get their shit together because no Coyotes does feel weird.
I was at the airport with my kids and it was incredible!!!
As a canadian. I am so happy utah has a team. Utah is my fave state. So they will be my 2nd team now.
I went downtown, early even, and it was WAY too packed even for me. I know there were hundreds more that turned around and went home too. We are so stoked!
They had to turn people away after the event started because it was standing room only. Delta was absolutely buzzing last night.
I got there an hour before the plaza party started and there was already hundreds of hockey fans already there! I stayed and ended up getting one of the last few free preseason ticket vouchers! What a great night it was!!
That is soo cool to hear.
@@shaslam6809 same stuff happened when Winnipeg moved to Phoenix….new opportunities bring out the people :)
There were a few AZ jerseys yesterday. I didnt think of it as dancing the grave but more that those fans can see their players up close without having to travel!
That is how I looked at it too.
Not surprised to see Coyotes jerseys there. There's a huge portion of hockey fans in Utah who became Coyotes fans when they moved from Winnipeg. To them, this move complicates nothing, but just gives them the option of showing up locally to support the team they've been behind all along. As someone who knows a lot of those local Coyotes fans, I can assure you there's no ill intent behind anyone showing up with their merch.
I've talked on my own channel about this, but before the talk turned so decisively toward relocation, one challenge an expansion team would face in Utah would be all those long-standing hockey fans with established loyalties, I honestly thought it would be a challenge for them to become anything more than "the locals' second-favorite team. Bringing the Coyotes in instead offers that incumbent portion of the fanbase (I honestly think that was a master stroke by SEG), and I'm also impressed with the number of untapped potential fans that are just getting into hockey because of this.
They'll do wonderfully here.
I work at the delta center. We sold out 12,500 seats for the welcome celebration with +5,000 people that were turned away outside. Remember this was during work and school hours
it was pretty impressive, i dont think anyone is doubting that. especially on somewhat short notice
@@brodiebrazil they gave out around 18,000 hotdogs as well😂 which equates to about 4,500 lbs of glizzies.
Never thought I'd see a meeting icebreaker being delivered to a crowd of thousands of people.
I went the the one the Avalanche did in Denver before their first season. Fans filled the old arena.
As a Sharks fan I am excited for Utah AND for all of us hockey fans in the Bay Area. Enthusiasm spreads. Now we just gotta get Celebrini, a couple of free agents, and a new coach.
I agree with you there. Seeing Timo, Karlsson and Burns leaving still hurts!
“I don’t care about shcool” spelling makes that even funnier 😂😂😂
I have been a hockey fan in Utah for 30 years but I lost some of my passion for the sport in recent years. This team just brought it back. I hope too talk my non sports fan husband into taking me to a few games this next season. I am so excited.
I was living in Colorado in '95 when the Quebec Nordiques moved to CO. I had no clue what was going on - heard some stuff on the radio (the DJs were big hockey fans). I was mildly curious - then they hit town and I went from 0 to 1,000 in a blink. I was addicted. My immediate family & social circle were ho-hum about it all, so I watch & learned by myself. The memories I have of learning about hockey when they came to town ... and then they won the cup that year too. It was electric - It was G4 in FL, 4:31 minutes into a Triple OT and Uwe Krupp took a shot from the blue line by the benches. I STILL remember that feeling. I lived on that adrenaline for a good week. I have 'infected' many with the love of Hockey since and now we get to have a team here in Utah and I couldn't be more excited. Wouldn't it be so cool if in Utah's inaugural hockey year .... 😉😉
I live in Utah and am excited about getting an nhl team but I feel for the die hard fans in Arizona. I’m not a fan of relocation. I know in some cases it’s warranted but I do feel for the fans that lose their teams.
Absolutely gutted for the Arizona fans. Just important for everyone to remember that us not getting the team wouldn't mean Arizona kept them. We'd just be having the same conversation about Houston. All we can realistically do is send our sincere condolences to the fans in Arizona, wish them the best in getting a team back, and do right by the team here in Utah.
I appreciate both of you guys. I've been a huge Yotes fan since inception and it's been a hard month to say the least. I'll still be supporting and cheering on the boys and the Utah NHL Team. I'm just glad we'll be able to watch them, at least for this season, locally in AZ. You guys inherited a great up and coming team that's about to really break out. The GM has been building the team the right way in his very short time with the franchise. It's the worst pain possible losing the team, at least they're finally being treated right by an owner. I really hope we get a team back, just hope it's not with our current ownership group.
Don’t worry it is obvious that Phoenix didn’t want an NHL team
@@Bk6346 Yeah ok troll
I’m a Coyotes fan. But these are my boys. My loyalty is to the team not the old owner. Now it’s Utah. Utah Coyotes I’m calling them. Til Utah has an official team name.
The coy Yetis.
You win, I love it!@@mosinc7388
Utah HC
@@mosinc7388why not the Coyutes? 😂
I am sooo sorry. It would be devastating to me, too.
The event was very cool. And watching the behind the scenes of watching the players walk around the stadium and getting there first look at their locker room and the arena. We heard players say this is amazing and impressive. I’m positive that this team will work out in Utah..🤘
Those weren't just kids, they were youth hockey players!
I started taking interest as the news came out about a team coming here, and was able to catch the final Coyotes game. I’ve become a fan of these guys and hockey overnight. The playoff games have been a blast to watch too. I’m pumped for this new team and these players, in some unfortunate but unique circumstances.
Coyotes fans, rest assured that we’ll take good care of your guys here. The welcoming event is just a small taste of what to expect from our fans ❤️
Congratulations to Utah for the reception given to their new team.
Well Done👏👏👏
I still feel bad for the Coyote fans back in Arizona, my heart aches for you as I’m going thru the same with my A’s😢😢😢
Same man
I was there for this...stood in line three hours for the doors to open and then another 90 minutes in the seats before the event began...the place was so packed, people were hanging from the rafters. The Fire Marshal eventually stopped access to the building because there were so many people inside the arena, that it was creating a hazard in case of an emergency. Some details...the first 5K inside got two free tickets to a Utah Hockey Club or Jazz preseason game...the Smiths provided free food and drinks for all attendees inside the arena....also held raffles during the event where, among other things, a kid a couple of rows to my left won two season tickets for the inaugural season in Utah...finally, after the event finished, the arena and concessions was kept open and fans were allowed to stay inside the arena and watch that evening's Stanley Cup playoff games. No question, this event was done right...
I’m a die hard Canadiens fan but definitely feel I will be making some room for this Utah team. They have some great players in place and you could see those personalities shine through during their intros. They have a lot of picks and prospects coming in the pipeline too. I feel awful for Arizona. They deserved to see this team morph into a contender and they deserved owners like the Smiths. Utah is stoked and it seems the players were pretty happy up on that stage. Yeti would be a great name!
I was there last night and it was amazing, insanely loud, and these players will be well cared for by this fanbase
Oh and when O'Brien got up and said that, it was SO LOUD.
this went from 0 to 1000 fast
No lie, purple sounds like a dope color to incorporate in Utah’s team.
The former Coyotes were in a shock when they were greeted by a thunderous reception. They probably asked themselves if the fans were there for the opposing team like they have long been used to.
I feel really sorry for the fans in Arizona.....
My local cricket team is the Outlaws, because they’re the Nottinghamshire team and much like our county flag and our county motto, everything here has to be Robin Hood themed 🤣
I was in the Delta center. It was cool to see the energy outside and inside the building. Reminded me of Vegas getting their team.
Colorado guy here and was young enough to remember when the Avs came to Denver in 1995 and there shirts said Colorado Hockey. They were almost the Rocky Mountain Extreme. So Utah you have that one
22:04 holy moly that guy absolutely did a bump of the white powder in his jeep before coming out to the event.
Really would have popped the arena if one of the players started with “good afternoon brothers and sisters”.
Now you know why we’re the “beehive state.” No place on earth knows how to work together for a common cause and accomplish the impossible the way that Utah does. It’s in our DNA!
Yessir
Would you be offended if I mentioned I don't like honey....?
As a jersey collector:
Both reverse retro 2.0 took almost 18 months from inception to release. That is for 1 sweater to with many inspirations. This is for a last minute relocation, with zero trademarks, nor canvas(Colors/Logo/Name/need for 2 sweaters.etc). It's been 3ish weeks since they decided on this.
FYI they aren’t just school kids. They are all youth hockey players. Even cooler!!
Never thought I would see my kids on your channel! 🎉
for the NHL in particular this is really out of the ordinary as well. The league is far more team centric rather than individual player centric in terms of presentation, and even when there are huge talents like Bedard etc., they don't push them as individual storylines but rather try to work it into a team storyline on the whole. There are pros and cons to this, but one of the major cons has been players not really showing as much of their personality, and as a result NHL interviews largely feeling the same. This gives a very different energy and clearly shows the experience with other sporting ventures the Smith ownership group has. With how well coordinated these events were and their overall arrival they really knocked it out of the park. Really removed a lot of the bad energy around the move with the respect and care that is being shown to the team and to the opportunity they were given from the NHL.
The players were clearly shocked at the reception they got
The fire Marshall made then shut the doors, there was seating for 12,500 available. There were several thousand more that had to watch outside the arena.
I'm really happy for the hockey fans in Utah. I live in Houston, TX and Hope we can get an NHL team here someday. I'm not sure if Houston is a hockey town, but with all the folks flocking here from the northeast, midwest, and California, I would think we can support a team.
I'm from Utah. Channel 5's saying is, "Utah News Specialists." So all their reporters are news specialists. I'm with you, Utah Yeti. My vote was Utah Iceotopes but it never did catch on. Utah Hockey Club this year. New name next year. Utahns are crazy fans if the teams are winning. Lots of open seats in the Delta Center this year for Jazz games.
Im happy for this move...it makes complete sense
Wow...my son and I were talking about 6 months ago on how cool it would be if Salt Lake got a team....it made sense to us......and here it is.....we live far from Salt Lake.....
The Utah Americans has a nice ring to it.
That has a very early 20th century vibe to it.
LFG Outlaws!!
Such a wholesome fanbase
I'm sick for the Arizonian's loss of the Coyotes. It is embarrassing and like a loss in the family, and I hope you can get a team back. That Phoenix area is awesome and deserving of the NHL obviously. I am elated to have our NHL team now here in Utah. It is the best sports franchise for a city to boast in my opinion. Hockey is the best kept secret in spectator sports, no doubt. Thanx for your coverage, Brodie.
KSL branding used to be “the News Specialists”…must be their way of carrying that classic branding into the 2020s.
Smith actually wanted to build a new arena but was only given the money if he agreed to keep the arena downtown
So, how about the Utah Spicy Tuna for a team name?
LA Kings fan here in Phoenix. Thats the first time 50% of the crowd was cheering on the coyotes. Good for them.
I'd like to see how the Utah grizzlies work of this NHL team
From recent reports the Elmore Sports Group have no desire to relocate the Grizzlies to another market, as yet... Maybe Colorado Springs?
Pretty obvious why that kid doesn't "give a crap about 'SHCOOL' "
That's how it was spelled on the building. School for kids with head injuries from hockey?
New York Rangers Fan here but I might have just found a proper Western Conference team to back for next season! LETS GO UTAH YETI!
I LOVE THE RANGERS too.
They did this so well. Obviously Vegas can sell tickets and put on a show, but just as much as the fans were happy, I think the players can start getting excited, especially the younger ones. Their life was uprooted with the move, but then they walk out and hear what a crowd sounds like. I think this gave them what they needed to be excited to come out for a real crowd...to..you know..have a real home game in the NHL.
They had plenty of crowds here in AZ. The issue to me is AZ is more of a collection of people from all over the country…and many times the arena was filled with more out of town sweaters then home jerseys 🤷🏼♂️. But attendance was sufficient enough. Just my opinion.
Well put, man.
@@ericbowers1620 Fair, but come to Boston for a game... a sea of black and gold. It is not just attendance. The owners failed the team
@@michaelbourque5978 Well thats Boston too…not a fair comparison really. But you are right, the owners didnt do them many favors including year one being put in a building not designed for hockey.
@@ericbowers1620 Well that was one of the many mistakes for sure. Fair to say an original 6 is not a fair comparison, but there are PLENTY of other teams that don't have the same issue, surly one of them would be comparable.
Yetis is better than Yeti
I guess one would this a Pep rally and it’s absolutely amazing.
Yes most definitely Utah Yeti.
Brodie: “get in line behind the San Jose sharks. You got to wait another 30 years before you wait to get a Stanley cup”
VGK: 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
CO AVS 95-96: hold my beer
The Utah Hornets should be their name!
I will guarantee you they will not be called the Hornets. It's fine if you like that name but it's not a name for a NHL hockey team.
Utah Yeti has a classic sound to it.
very cool, good luck to the Utah whatever, unless my Hawks are playing you...
Should've had the team name and sweaters ready for sale before the team arrived. Imagine the crowds with all the sweaters and hats. Big fail that didnt happen.
I much prefer the “Utah Outlaws”
Utah is much more of a winter sports area than Arizona.
We do have skiing in Northern Arizona.
I like "Utah Hive"
Not bad! All kinds of LOGO opportunities
Sounds like a WNBA team name.
SEG hoodwinking the NHL saying they'll build a new building, then reneging on that. We all know this team should be in houston.
redoing delta center probably the better fit, tbh
You apparently think it should be in Houston. What I know is that Utah will support this team and a 500 million dollar renovation to the Delta Center and 400 million dollars spent for the sports district surrounding it will be very well done and it will be a great venue. But maybe you'll get a hockey team in the future.
If it's any consolation Brodie, your coverage is excellent. Utah sports media gets a D+ from me. The excitement and intrigue is there; the hockey knowledge is abysmal. They're gonna have to plow through the NHL curriculum in 3 months or they're likely out of a job.
Why I hate the consolidation of sports media. I loathe hearing Scott Zolak try to talk Bruins hockey on sports radio.
Yeah one of the stations posted a pic with like a couple hundred people. It didn't do it justice, it was absolutely packed in the Delta center and so so loud
Newsflash...no real fan gets anything from any local sports media...those people are only really focused on casuals that don't really follow the game on an every day basis...we'll always have Brodie and The Hockey Guy for real detailed analysis.
Hells bells, man. Relax.
I think one of the reasons why Salt lake won’t be used as part of the team name is because it has an acronym that spells SLUT (Salt Lake Utah). Ironically Utah is a religious state😅.
No it’s because the governor would only give funding if it had the name Utah because he wanted it to be bigger than just the city of salt lake.
@@jeron3966 it was a joke
This is not only great for the city but it's great for the players as well - especially the impending free agents who were thinking of leaving the team at the end of the year. Coming from a situation where you playing in a college arena as a last resort to THIS bangin' reception (far better than any in Arizona)... I'm thinking some free agents might just end up re-signing with the team. If I was FA and attended this event, I'd strongly reconsider staying if I was thinking of moving on.
Thank you.
A lot of superstar athletes like to play for a team in a big city with plenty of action / big money endorsement opportunities, thus the reason why many free agents gravitate to New York, LA, Houston, Chicago, Boston, etc., over and above the contract offers.
The Cicadas, give em native color scheme
Didn't those people get into the Delta Center free of charge....? If they offered a free chicken shawarma instead of a hot dog, I would've considered showing up, and I live in the GTA.
Absolutely good Look
Colorado Avalanche mascot is the yeti and they have a logo of it's foot.
Yes....but they're called the Avalanche. That's on them.
Utah Yeti vs the Colorado Avalanche
Battle of the Snowmen....I like it.
Utah Yeti. Sponsored by Yeti. Playing at the Yeti Center.
Why not the Stanley cups? Sponsored by Stanley, playing at the Stanley Center and the direct competitor of Yeti tumblers. 😂
Las Vegas did nothing for Athletics
As much as I hate to see the Coyotes leave Arizona it was a good decision. Hopefully Arizona once they get their crap together, we get the coyotes back. But there are far worse places they could’ve relocated to the Salt Lake City.
They say that home is wherever you find love, so I guess the guys followed the right VORTAC...I wish them the best, and good on the Utah fans for what can only be called an outburst of positivity...Enjoy those free hotdogs though. Guaranteed they'll never be free again... 😂 ...Now I need a nap to recover from those purple pants... 😩 ...Where's my Tylenol?...
Utah Olympians sounds appropriate
I was at the arena yesterday. It was nuts!
there is a minor league hockey team with Yeti its the Vail Yeti's in Colorado
Dude in the Coyotes jersey is high AF! lol
They should call themselves the Utah Yeti.
That way, they can have the nickname;
“The Abominable Snowmen!”
Ryan Smith isn't ready to announce a nickname yet-i (see what I just did there...?). Should be the Utah Yeti (singular). Blizzard would be my second choice as you could still have an abominable snowman creature on the logo, as the team mascot, on merchandise, etc. Plus, a pre-game blizzard light show in the arena. Agreement with Dairy Queen for special edition Blizzard cups, etc.
I thought Yeti lived in Nepal?
"I don't give a crap about shcool"... literally "shcool"
The fire marshal closed the doors with aver 12k inside
Ugh, I want to puke. This is as bad as watching your ex enter your own parents house with her new man. It's making me so upset 😢
Still think the name should be.the .
Salt Lake City. Scorpions !
Please be “the yeti”
If you want news specialists watch MSNBC he's saying
The team will win many Cups before MLSE ever does.
Like the idea of a singular “yeti” “ Utah yeti” can’t imagine it would work as a TEAM name though..unless mcdavids on the team. Lol.
I think yeti would be plural for multiple yetis anyways, right?
Yetis sounds so awkward. Let’s hope yeti is the official term for plural yeti because it sounds good
Agree. Utah Yeti. Second choice: Utah Blizzard.
Good to see... Kind of bizzare, but good to see for the players that have had to deal with the joke that Arizona had become
The best thing about ASU hockey now is they own Phoenix now, they will never move, no arena issues, no cheapskate owner. We'll be fine. Hopefully Utah can get college hockey as a result of having the NHL in town.
How about the Utah Busy Bees
If they do pick yeti, yeti should take over the naming rights
Frankly I prefer the Blizard name. I wonder if they can make a sponsorship deal with Dairy Queen?
Tbh this was a long time coming
The golden eagles should have moved into the NHL after the second league they were in collapsed.
I wonder if they’ve told the guys what a “clean/ family friendly” market this is and to try not to swear during media
Bro utah jazz players swear all the time. Nobody really cares.
