Really enjoying this series, been playing along on a NA server. Our ships are remarkably similar but last week I decided to make a change and I flipped the front and rear of my ship . I had loads of reverse thrust and not as much forward thrust. So I made a single row of vertical conveyors into 5 more large h2 tanks and slapped on another 5 large h2 thruster for forward thrust. Looks ridiculous, but 0 to 100 m\s in a few seconds.
I love the enclosed passageways that has air vents on the side. So you can have a air vent passage way with a 90 bend pipe to a tank that is next to the door block then other side that another 90 connecting to a vented passageway (i like to have on decompress) then you can do another door like out to space or what ever... Handy also when your on planet that has O2 you can just open the outer door and it will fill the tank with out needing ice.
Might be fun to retain the front of the ship with some sort of glass shape. I must admit I rather like the shadow effects on the interior, created by that really harsh space light...
if you set tb start to turn on tb end and turn off tb start, then set timer end to turn on tb start and turn off tb end, then turn one of them off, group them and use only one slot on hot bar to toggle by trigger now tb group. Ya know what I mean? Also, you'll find gold faster by scanning each with the Disco Detector. :) I know you're not using gps, but if you make temp gps, and scan all asteroids within about 40km maximum you'll surely find gold. I always always find all ores first, then build, then move, but your way will eventually work too! Lastly, I actually really like your bedroom lol. It has a cryotube, so I could see actually using it. Nicely vented too!
17:30 ish Cargo pull order: Ignoring blocks that push like drills that probably take priority… In my past testing on the same grid, the refinery will pull from the physically closest block object first - that’s different for each refinery. When 2 cargos are equal distance it’s likely something like north, east, south, west priority set in the script itself or possibly the build order of the cargo blocks placed. I’m guessing at that part but it’s not easy to tell ether of those things anyway. But on top of that on occasion you can lock a refinery into pulling one kind of ore for a bit probably an unintentional bug. Say you have a refinery full of iron pulling from cargo A but you move nickel into cargo A and put the iron into cargo B. You then put some iron in a drill. First of all iron disappears from the drill, one can assume right into the refinery but that’s not to say it does not go into the cargo, after the cargo gets space to place it. So the refinery is taking from the cargo not drill? But what I’m saying here is the refinery may pull from the iron cargo that’s not as close in this situation. (it may be the drill dose not fill the minimum pull amount so it searches more iron) No way to prove it, but it might explain why (sometimes) the refinery may proceed to take a full pull load of iron from the far cargo container after the drill has emptied. It looks like there are some temp links being formed. And sometimes it will then get locked to that far cargo container. I can only guess at that. You may be able to force this behaviour without a drill, by filling from a cargo, that contains the ore type currently being processed in a long running world. By long running I mean you have had the game going for over 8 hours on a low end computer XD. Just saying, there are reasons why servers reset and single player needs help also lol! … or I may be over thinking and the block indexing gets a little loose in a long running game on an operating system no one wants to support anymore .. XD But normally the closest box, to the processing block.
What i would have done, is a printer-launcher setup for small, inexpensive, unguided limpet drones, with a short lifespan and a detector and a antenna on it. Without radio spectrometry, it os a viable, fuel efficient alternative.

a good place for a cargo container is where a Junction is = since you have a junction in the floor, that's a perfect spot for one to have easy access into. Cockpit Studio combo. make the Medical Bay separate since you'll be adding so many other Cryotubes to carry peeps in so how will you do salvage recovery should you find a wreck? also, build 2 more Lg. Cargo Copntainers off a Sorter to pull and store ice in so it doesn't fill up your main storage.
I'm not a fan of cargo access in the floor from an aesthetic standpoint, which is why I so rarely do it :D I think it's highly improbable that I'd find a wreck as the servers have no NPCs and I can't imagine any player wrecks surviving the cleanup for long
Ive seen a suggestion of naming the the mining ship the marlin which gives an idea for name suggestions for the other two ships. Some angler fish have parasitic males that attach themselves to females exponentially larger than themselves and are unable to survive without them. Many angler fish also have growing lures on their head. Therfore my suggested names are The Angler for the large mothership and The Lure for the tiny or detection disco ball ship.
In my similar adventure, I've now traversed slightly more than half of the 400,000 km toward the inner planets. It's taken me about 80 jumps so far, even with 6 jump drives, because I have built up far too big a ship ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just went through this on my solo world. Checked asteriods for two or three sessions broken up with some building before I finally found some. I mined that asteriod out completely
I joined a server once. Got attacked on day 2, hadn't even built my ship, found magnesium or silver or gold. But they blew me out of the sky, then asked why i didnt shoot back. They told me that they could see when asteroids were being mined from upto 100k away. Something to do with how the voxels react when being mined and asteroids acting in clusters of 100k. I didnt fully understand, but i knew then that playing on a server is just a waste of time. No point even trying to do anything if people can see where you are even at those ranges. So i stick to playing on my own or with friends. Atleast then i get to actually build stuff and have a laff. Kinda the point of playing IMO.

On another earlier one I built it on earth on the surface, working also for over a month without getting attacked. But remember, if you start fare out, its because some one else is in that area so you might want to get some distance away from where you start.

Thats when he told me about the 100k thing. I always thought the "Draw distance" in the options was for how far you could see, even with a camera, but maybe its a game code thing. I had travelled a fair bit after starting in space, and logged out over night, then back in the next day to do more work, me and a mate. But all for nought, lol.
I've heard very differing stories about the server experience and it seems to go like this: the more popular the server (e.g. NA servers) the quicker you run into someone who just wants to kick down the sand castles we build
I always use groups to group batteries and h2 generators and stuff, so I don’t have to add a million batteries to the timer blocks when automating recharge.
I know you have far more time in SE than I do and don't have a lot of space on your ship, but what I have taken to doing is blacklisting stone from my advanced refineries and just running only stone through a parallel group of basic refineries. That way, the important ores get precedence for the good refineries.
The disadvantage there is that you do get increased yields from stone through the advanced refineries. Given how quickly they can process I prefer to retire all the basics and just use the better ones for everything :)
You just made my day!! Why do I love you so much?!? Is it the undeniable kindness and authenticity in your persona and voice? May God bless all the days of your life!
I find it incredibly amusing that while there are some stark differences, you're following the same sort of thought process that I did, with hatch doors and decorative blocks and such. Great minds think alike, I suppose!
the difference with planetary ores is that they are fixed. they dont spawn like asteroids, they are at that coordinates from the start of the game. and i think its faster to search thoroughly.. chances of gold spawning, + spawning on the surface + spawning on a surface you see.. wow.. thats like playing the state lottery. searching every roid thoroughly on the other hand will get you the first gold that spawns
Everything about this is starting to feel like star trek Voyager. (Not a bad thing). The ships coming together well and is taking on a similar shape... Your a looong way from home... Your constantly looking for resources... Yup. Voyager. XD. I love it though.
Jump drives are airtight on all their faces. IMO i always search asteroids in my suit instead of a ship because it uses much less fuel/energy and it's much quicker. I'll search 2-3 in my suit, return for a refuel/recharge of my suit, then repeat until i've searched 10 or so of the nearest asteroids. Only then will i move my ship to a new location. Most asteroids will have two ores and only rarely one or none, but almost never more then two. Once you fins two ores on an asteroid you've found them all.
@@Splitsie The hand drill does have terrible range so rather then check for sub-surface deposits i tend to favor checking asteroid clusters rather then the large ones first since the smaller asteroids in the clusters tend to force the ores deposits to the surface rather then bury them. The large asteroids almost never have large enough deposits of any ores that make scanning over them with a ore detector worth the effort. I honestly wish Keen would just increase the ore detector range already.
I assume NA servers work the same for the ores... I have found asteroid clusters with patches of everything in them before, but it's been a while. Another thing about the public servers is that they usually have voxel repair turned on, usually, so you can mine a whole ore deposit, fly 20km away, fly back, and the whole deposit has respawned. Which is why I will just build whole mining towers on patches... to make sure I get everything there. Bonus points that you can stick a refinery on the rig itself, and get the ingots processed right away, without your ship needing to be there, or using its power. Or just stick a connector on and have it deposit directly.
I think they all work the same, though as I'm trying to slowly move toward my goal I'm not doing any backtracking so far (unless I spot gold, then I'll go back as far as I need to) :P
Splitsie, how would a bit of a future challenge go for you, with these new event controller blocks since they can control power switching. "solar via day to engines throughout the night etc" No base, or ship can use a battery (except for having one installed purely for jump starting engines etc) Can setup custom starting rover with plenty of hydrogen fuel and near an ice deposit but somewhere where wind turbines aren't really effective to stop the spamming of constant reliable power. Doesn't have to be overly combat focused, aka survival impossible seems a decent balance. Your choice of Planet/Moon G rating for ship difficulty. Would be interesting to see what builds would look like and how you overcome it all. P.S you've stated yourself that we all love to see you suffer 😀
I tried this, but it doesn't work. Switching drills on/off is for having them run automatically - it doesn't stop you from mining if you have them selected as a tool.
Instead of using lights on your miner you could use the *BuildInfo* mod to display 2 load bars while drilling. On a vanilla multiplayer server this is still possible by using the plugin loader.
Splitsie, would a Spotlight turret also have a zoom function? I was thinking that you could possibly mount a spotlight turret on the nose of your ship and then not have to deviate your nose from the path of travel. Also, you have a bonus light that you could add to the front of your ship.
event controller to enable reactors when batteries below 50% and disable when they are above 75? timer block for the scanning ship, that gets triggered by Docked event, that keeps O2 tank ON and sets it to Stockpile, and triggers another timer to, in 10 seconds, turn Stockpile OFF and tank Off? So that UN-docking will turn it on?
When you're sleeping in cryo, your character doesn't get deleted by the server and you still spawn Strong Unknown Signals 20-80km away from you. Multiple of those spawn, people save them and they can find you. At least that's one of the ways we use to find people where I play. It could somehow be disabled on official servers, I don't know though. Anyways, nice progress! Perhaps you'll get into pvp yourself one day
PvP's not for me, I like building sand castles much more than tearing them down. Though I do hope that this goes a bit like my other public server series where people end up doing some cheeky things here and there :)
I know I'm late to comment on this, but for the cargo container indicators I completely skipped using lights, and instead used a LCD screen with an image to turn on/off to indicate when full.
Instead of indicator lights at the back you could try transparent LCDs with a red background. When off they've no color, but when on will be bright red
Oh, trust me on my same try of this scenario. It took me two weeks to find gold. There is one cavoite. A guy on the server I was on brought some gold out to me for just enough to build one jump drive and a gravity gen. I for the trade he got the parts for two small reactors and 50 uranium ingots. He was shocked at that trade. I would have given more if he had asked me for more. 😉👍 I was sick of searching for gold! Why is it so hard to find? I can find tons of Uranium and Platinum. Ask for gold and you can just hang it up. That stuff is almost impossible to find out in the "Black".
That's really cool that you managed to organise a trade, I'd have been tempted to do the same but I was often on my own during these recordings - less so as the series goes on though :P
@@Splitsie Well not sure if I waited to long to get back on or what. Or if my ship was destroyed. I had a massive tone of Ur and ice. So, running out wouldn't have happened. That is something of a double need for ice, and quite a lot of it also. Keep up the great series. I look forward to your episodes. 😁👍
Question about the event controller and timer combo from last episode. You shut off every thrusters one by one because in case you destroy that ship, the blueprints will have that programmed into that particular block? If you used groups those groups wouldn't exist because it's a different grid? Therefore the ship wouldn't have the autodock features. Is that right? Thanks for the help understanding this. I'm still quite new to this game but/and I'm obsessed with it.
Just an idea... along with (or in place of) the lights on the miner... can't you just program the drills to shut off at 99% capacity to prevent over mining?
You would run the risk of having the miner fill up before transferring the ore to the cargo, especially if you have ejectors you then have to reenable the drills.

As someone who also gets lost easily hear me out: beacon + event controller set to detect when you're in the main cockpit.
You could also use another to turn the beacon off when you are in the cryo tube.
Good ideas :)
These days I seem to be leaving all my airlocks on decompress too, which may be why TFE keeps dying so often in AA :D
More of this please, it's Great!
I'm sure a lot of other people have said this already but jump drives are airtight!
XD
But normally the closest box, to the processing block.
What i would have done, is a printer-launcher setup for small, inexpensive, unguided limpet drones, with a short lifespan and a detector and a antenna on it. Without radio spectrometry, it os a viable, fuel efficient alternative.
I hope he never finds gold and this becomes a 100 episode series of splitsie stumbling through space
It would at least give us a chance to find him if he can't jump 😅
@@MasterManiac now I just imagine splitsie exploring asteroids as a group of smaller ships follows him from a distance hiding behind asteroids and messing with him while he is offline
@@vid101. I'm pretty certain I'm his server, have found his starting position, and have tracked his movements to the end of this episode, but he's no longer here because he's recorded a few episodes ahead. If I'm right the next episode he'll find gold about 7.5kms from where he parked up (or will kick himself for missing it).
the anticipation for the form that youre ship will take in the long run is awesome from episode to episode ( even though youre limited in pcu ) i should turn out suprisignly good ... well given you dont have an accident along the way :D cheers and nice video
Figners crossed there are no great tragedies en route :D
Put survival kits at the rear and midships just incase the medbay gets destroyed.
I mean your capac and tfe safe but safety spawner is important.
Leave a single reactor on for offline? Should use stuff all fuel at idle
Why does all except 1 reactor need to be offline?
Another way to detect cargo % is the use an event controller and set the window to "equal to or greater than %" and set the event outcome to turn the drills off
the large grid ore detector needs 50 more meters imo
I feel like a 50% buff to both would go a long way to making asteroid searching less painful, although I'd far prefer that keen integrate a system like the Radio Spectroscopy mod :)
50:05, Thinking the Admin has removed Gold from the Asteroids and only has one planet for Gold :)
That would be terrible
That's not a cockpit, it's a bridge.
35:30 - Gotta look for it them thar hills, Splits'!
a good place for a cargo container is where a Junction is = since you have a junction in the floor, that's a perfect spot for one to have easy access into.
Cockpit Studio combo. make the Medical Bay separate since you'll be adding so many other Cryotubes to carry peeps in
so how will you do salvage recovery should you find a wreck?
also, build 2 more Lg. Cargo Copntainers off a Sorter to pull and store ice in so it doesn't fill up your main storage.
I'm not a fan of cargo access in the floor from an aesthetic standpoint, which is why I so rarely do it :D
I think it's highly improbable that I'd find a wreck as the servers have no NPCs and I can't imagine any player wrecks surviving the cleanup for long
You’ll find that gold, halfway to home… that or you may have to indulge in piracy…
Got to say I like to setup engine/tank nacelles in an X formation, I just seem to find it visually appealing.
It's not something I've done often, but as I contemplate it, I kinda want to try a Y shape at some point now :P
I may well end up in the same situation :D
Thanks Splitsie, helps a lot
I just went through this on my solo world. Checked asteriods for two or three sessions broken up with some building before I finally found some. I mined that asteriod out completely
If I find some, I intend to do the same :)
If i have spotted it correctly i think that one thruster of the scout ship is not disabled if docked. :)
Yup, it's going to stay like that for a bit too (I've recorded ahead and know how long it'll be before I deal with it) :P
Yea I don't play on servers, but if I did, I would be on one where pvp is disabled because I don't like when my stuff is destroyed without reason lol
@@Gracefulwarrior2124 I dont mind tho whole PVP thing, but he could have appeared with his weapons set to target weapons, then when nothing of his fired, sent a msg for my surrender. Id found a load of uranium and platinum. He just blew it all up. Sheer madness. LOL
Sounds strange, I have played a lot on servers now and on one I have been building my ship for a month without anyone finding and attacking.
On another earlier one I built it on earth on the surface, working also for over a month without getting attacked.
But remember, if you start fare out, its because some one else is in that area so you might want to get some distance away from where you start.
@@davidmartensson273 Yea i figured that, as i said, i did talk to the guy after, he said sorry and that he wouldnt do it again, but i had spent maybe 12 hours of actual game-play for nothing.
I feel like you'd be able to see the indicator lights on your miner a lot more easily if they were flashing.
Yep probably :P
Yes and maybe a color that really screams like neon green, purple, turquoise or maybe orange.
Or put plates around them to shade them from sunlight like a traffic light
@@miniblasan5717orange, shudder
It's starting to look like a B-wing from starwars... I like it. Might have to go back to my solo world soon.
Should add the outline of the jump drive
Hi Splitsie, you may want to verify there is gold in asteroids.
Every resource is available in asteroids in vanilla so my search will eventually find some... unless RNG really, really hates me :D
I always use groups to group batteries and h2 generators and stuff, so I don’t have to add a million batteries to the timer blocks when automating recharge.
47:03 splitsie's undertale character arc is finally happening
I know you have far more time in SE than I do and don't have a lot of space on your ship, but what I have taken to doing is blacklisting stone from my advanced refineries and just running only stone through a parallel group of basic refineries. That way, the important ores get precedence for the good refineries.
The disadvantage there is that you do get increased yields from stone through the advanced refineries. Given how quickly they can process I prefer to retire all the basics and just use the better ones for everything :)
That one ion thruster on the scout ship. 2:07
It took me sooooo long to fix that :D
Been waiting on another one of these.
vents on in unsealed rooms.... killer on ice...
My latest survival game has me 20+ hours without finding uranium, I’m actually jealous of your luck splitsie
You just made my day!! Why do I love you so much?!? Is it the undeniable kindness and authenticity in your persona and voice? May God bless all the days of your life!
No worries about the jump drives, they are airtight.
I find it incredibly amusing that while there are some stark differences, you're following the same sort of thought process that I did, with hatch doors and decorative blocks and such. Great minds think alike, I suppose!
Decoration is just too much fun to not do :)
the difference with planetary ores is that they are fixed. they dont spawn like asteroids, they are at that coordinates from the start of the game.
and i think its faster to search thoroughly.. chances of gold spawning, + spawning on the surface + spawning on a surface you see.. wow.. thats like playing the state lottery. searching every roid thoroughly on the other hand will get you the first gold that spawns
a Lizzard head is a nice shape for a cockpit
I've had so little success with the short range of the hand drill that for me (with my sense of direction) it's not worth using :P
"...and with a single key press..."
The dreaded "demo effect" strikes again.😂
Splitsie, how would a bit of a future challenge go for you, with these new event controller blocks since they can control power switching. "solar via day to engines throughout the night etc"
No base, or ship can use a battery (except for having one installed purely for jump starting engines etc)
Can setup custom starting rover with plenty of hydrogen fuel and near an ice deposit but somewhere where wind turbines aren't really effective to stop the spamming of constant reliable power.
I have started from the space pod and found every metal except cobalt. Run was ended by pirates, that was a frustrating one...
30:28 I would love to see a first person only, it changes how you do things like docking fundamentally.
I like to smelt the stone first since the refineries chunk it down pretty fast
For you Ore miner, why not switching the drills off when 90% full? Then you just can't overdo it!
I tried this, but it doesn't work. Switching drills on/off is for having them run automatically - it doesn't stop you from mining if you have them selected as a tool.
Oh, that's good to know :)
If someone knows the time of the server restart, they could pinpoint you based on the location of the sun using your shadows. Be careful.
A quick search indicates that jump drives are airtight.
Make a mining drone
Instead of using lights on your miner you could use the *BuildInfo* mod to display 2 load bars while drilling.
On a vanilla multiplayer server this is still possible by using the plugin loader.
As this is a vanilla playthrough it feels disingenuous for me to use plugins to bring any amount of mods into it
Splitsie, would a Spotlight turret also have a zoom function? I was thinking that you could possibly mount a spotlight turret on the nose of your ship and then not have to deviate your nose from the path of travel. Also, you have a bonus light that you could add to the front of your ship.
Yup a searchlight would be a good option too :)
Keen just needs to add pyrite to the game now...
event controller to enable reactors when batteries below 50% and disable when they are above 75?
timer block for the scanning ship, that gets triggered by Docked event, that keeps O2 tank ON and sets it to Stockpile, and triggers another timer to, in 10 seconds, turn Stockpile OFF and tank Off?
Double clicking on an item will automatically remove it from the bar btw, save your clickies
Instead of indicator lights at the back you could try transparent LCDs with a red background. When off they've no color, but when on will be bright red
well, never mind
LCDs would certainly have a benefit - I wish there was a way to change the picture with timer blocks rather than just on/off though
@@Splitsie or that it didn't say "Offline" when turned off
@@SplitsieYou could use the Emoticon block perhaps. Change it's mood when the containers fill up ..
I have never found uranium ore ever (outside of meteor showers lol) since playing this game
I was sick of searching for gold!
Why is it so hard to find?
I can find tons of Uranium and Platinum.
Ask for gold and you can just hang it up. That stuff is almost impossible to find out in the "Black".
OH, and good luck. I am pulling for you finding gold some day before 2030. 🤣😂
I may have been off the server 3 or 4 days. I got on and I was meet with the respawn all over from scratch.
I guess someone found my horde and got lucky. Now someone on the NorthAmerican #2 server is very, VERY RICH! LOL! I had like 2,600 Pt, 36,000+ Au and even more Ag. I had been refining Ur bet I had probably 1200 ingots or something like that. I would bet I could last for 2 weeks. Only thing I would need to search for would be ice. O2 is the life in space, and when you ship moves around on hydrogen.
Swap sides with the med may an cryo chamber and it will allow you to make the bridge more narrow
Huh, yeah that might have allowed a bit of a tighter fit
There's gold in them thar asteroids, just gotta find it
Edit: the wiki says jump drives are indeed airtight, so you can have a light in your airlock.
Just an idea... along with (or in place of) the lights on the miner... can't you just program the drills to shut off at 99% capacity to prevent over mining?
You would run the risk of having the miner fill up before transferring the ore to the cargo, especially if you have ejectors you then have to reenable the drills.
@@davidmartensson273 ahh great point. Hmmmm, something to think about for sure.
Honestly I didn't think through that part either, I just naturally lean toward more manual controls for these things :P
@@Splitsie well, it's a game after all. If you automate everything, you'll get bored.
