    Just found this tutorial, after using acrylic paints for 3 years ,I'm wanting to try pastel pencils for the first time so relying on TH-cam for information as I'm clueless and you sound like a man of wisdom who knows his craft

    Hi Colin. Thanks so much for your comprehensive tutorial! I like the calm, chatty way you describe everything, with no music interfering with our hearing the words. I'm normally a painter but now i really want to try pastel pencils!

    What an excellent demonstration Colin. Everything shown clearly and so well explained. Thank you very much for your time and effort. Really enjoyed it. I am an oil painter but you have whetted my appetite for pastels now, so looking forward to having a go.

    This is brilliant! At one point when you were shading the neck with one of the grays, you made a tiny mark at the corner of the dog’s mouth. In that one tiny motion you turned that terrier into a doggie ‘Mona Lisa’. Your teaching style is wonderful. Thank you!

    Hi Colin, Eileen & Steve.
    I hope you are all well? I heard you mention ''crushing the paper'' You see, being a first year student, I tend to use my eraser a lot & have become ''King of Eraser Pencils'' LOL but have learnt a lot of different tricks because of it such as buffering the paper teeth up again slightly to fix my problem. BTW, I spend 4 hrs every day on my pastel pencils as I am very indicted to them like a drug really, can't even take one day off to finish a book that is very dear to me. Goodo, hope all is going well & I just love your instructing Colin :-) Tony Curtis Oz

    Hi Colin. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have just completed my first dog portrait using pastels for the first time. Can I ask if you use fixative at the end of the process or does this change the values too much? Thanks.

    • @colin1940
      @colin1940  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that using a fixative does dramatically change the value of the colours, therefore I prefer not to fix my work.

      +Mythical Flute Colin prefers not to use fixative with pastel pencils because it tends to dull the artwork. Please see the links below for more information:

      +Mariaraquel Oliver I have no experience with Reeves products so I can't give you any advice. The Faber-Castell Pitt pastel pencils I use are safe therefore I would stick to them if you can. Soft pastels are made differently to the pastel pencil and won't give you the same results.

      Thank you for your kind feedback. It is possible to try the Polychromos pencils although you will not be able to create the same effects that you see in the video. This is because the pastel pencils are better at blending into each other, but give it a try.

    Thank you for the free lesson! Always love your videos. A strange thing happened for me with this one, though. when using my 187 pencil, the color of my pencil is totally different than yours! I use the exact same brand (my favorite for art supplies) and my 187 is much lighter in color than yours! And I do mean the pencil itself when you are holding it. So strange! Yours looks much more reddish and looks closer in color to mine that is numbered 188. Even the paint on the end of the pencils are colored different - yours more reddish and mine closer to a orangey-yellowish shade, like the color of my pencil! At this stage, my doggie is turning out more like a terra cotta shade. When I finish, I'll let you know how it turns out over-all.

      Thank you for your kind feedback. The colour of the 187 pastel pencil has never altered as far I know,it may appear that way on the video due to the video process.

      Thank you for your feedback. Compared to other art mediums pastel pencils are priced reasonable. Consider that they never dry out I have several colours that I only use occasionally that I have had for years and they are as fresh as the day I brought them.

    Great video. If I don't have greys for the undertones, would a light blue work?

    • @colin1940
      @colin1940  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jennifer Allen You could try this colour, what I suggest is that you try a test piece on spare paper to see how it turns out grey would be preferable though if you can manage to find it even if it is another make of pastel pencil.

    • @colin1940
      @colin1940  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t worry you’re not alone everyone faces that problem eventually, even me. I found that the more pictures I completed the more I overcame that fear of spoiling the work. The trick is to stop working before you feel that you should in other words leave it wanting. Have it in your mind you could return to it later, when you return to the work you might find that no more is needed, I hope that helps.

    What's the difference between pastels and pastel pencils?

    • @colin1940
      @colin1940  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pastel pencils are hard whereas stock pastels are soft when applied to pastel paper and the hardness allows for better detail, thank you for your comment.

    • @colin1940

      abc d Unfortunately the polichromos pencils do not have the same blending properties as the pastel pencils therefore you will not be able to create the same effects.

    Why didn't you leave the background the color of the paper?

    • @colin1940
      @colin1940  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is always better to apply a background colour rather than leave the paper showing for several reasons, for one thing it serves to enhance the subject.
